[tri&wlin] LATEK FROM EUROPE. Arrival of the Steamer KANGAROO. St. Johns, August 5.—The steamship Kangaroo with Liverpool dates to the 25lhult, passed Cape Race on Friday night last. The commercial news by the Kangaroo wore anticipated by the Prince Albert and the Australasian. General News. Peace has been concluded between the Maronites and the Druses. It was reported that the French ex pedition had been courntormanded. It was said that Sardinia consents to Garibaldi’s proposition for a truce for six months. Convention of the Constitutional Union Party. Milledoiville, July 10 1860. The Executive Committee of the Con stitutional Union Party, after mature deliberation upon the Bubjeot, advise and recommend that the Party proceed at once to appoint delegates to assem ble in Convention, in this place, on MONDAY, the 13th of August for the purpose of nominating its Presidentia Electorial ticket, and for the further purpose of consulting in reference to the moans that may be calculated to se cure its success. Fire. 1 On Monday night, about 2 o’clock, our citizens were aroused from their slumbers by the alarm of fire, which was found to proceed from the wooden buil ding nearly opposite the Episcopal Church, the property of Mrs. L. J. Peck, of Augusta, and occupied by Mr. R. Y. Moore, and Mr. B. G. Salvage, the Foreman of the Courier office. The fire ik supposed to have originated from ash es deposited in a box in the basement room oi the house, and had progressed so far when discovered, that the Occu pants wore just ablo to escape withou* saving anything but their lives from the flames. Their loss is about $200 each. The building was insured for about $800. The fire next communicated with the building owned and occupied by Mr. R. L. Duncan^ and burnt it to the ground but tlie night being very calm, and no other houses within reach of the flames, the conflagration proceeded no further' Mr. Duncan saved his movables. Loss $609; insurance $300. Lecture by Rev.C. W. Howard. We have received from the ^author a m copy ofhis Lecture on “Christian Be nevolence as illustrated in the early History of Georgia.” It was first deliv 1 ered before the young Men’s Christian Association of Augusta, next in this place and afterwards in every city and town of importance in the State. We had the pleasure of hearing it here, and the impression then made upon our mind has not since passed away, and the delight of that hour will bo repro duced by a perusal of the address in its present form. It is neatly and creditably printed at the “Steam Power press of the Chron icle A Sentinel” Augusta, Ga., at the request and for the benefit of the As sociation in that city. Latest News. The market was generally unchanged. General News. Naples dispatches to the 23d say that Memnaand Syracuse have been eva cuated by the Royal troops, 'who were being conveyed by steamers to Naples. Garibaldi has captured Melazzo. Victor Emanuel bos resolved to send an autograph letter toGaribaldi, request ing him not to attack the Continental possessions in Naples. • Eleven thousaud Frenbh troops have have gone to Syria and thirty-five hun dred from Eugland, and the English fleet were going. The British military authorities request an increase of the army. Telegrams from Paris say that every thing tends to the belief that Garibaldi was directing an expedition against the mainland, but it lacks confirmation. Lord Palmerston’s speech on the Na tional defences caused great uneasi ness. The Great Eastern in Trouble* New York, August 5.—A suit has been commenced against the Great Eas tern for an infringement of an Ameri can patent in the use of the combined paddle and screw as a motive power. The damages aro laid at fifty f hous- and dollars. North Carolina Election. Petersburg Va., August 6.—Tho Ex press of this eity states that thirty coun ties have been heard from in North Carolina which give a nett gain for Pool of four thousand and twelve votes. Forty-seven counties ore yet unheard of which in 1858 give Ellis a majority of Beven thousand four hundred and forty- eight votes. Tho counties yet to hear trom are chiefly in.the west portion of the State, where Pools' friends report large gains. The opinion here is that Ellis will be elected by a greatly reduc ed majority. Kentucky Election. Cincinnati, Onio, August 6.—We have received returns from eleven towns in Kentucky and they gave Combs three thousund four hundred majority. Later From Mexico. New Orleans, August 5.—The schoon er Potomac with Vera Crux dates to the 2tst ulc, arrived here to-day. The Pocahontas brings important dis patches for Washington. The city of Vera Cruz was healthy. The Spanish frigate Isabel arrived at Vera Cruz to communicate with the Spanish Minister. Miramon was at Layes. The Liberals were concentrating their forces to attack the Capitol. There is also on the piano a first diass flouring mill and two good Saw Mills, all 1** Dairyman’s Daughter.—One of the pleasantest churchyards I know of is in the Isle of Wight, and many years ago I was sauntering among ita grasses, when I saw a lady in deep mourning, with a little girl, sitting on a tombstone. The former was reading a book to the latter, who was looking with tearful eyes into her mother’s faoe. When they turned away trora the spot I saw they had-been looking on the tomb of tho Dairyman’s Daughter, whose simple epitaph was engraved on the tomb stone. The lady was the Dutchess of Kent, and the little girl was the Prin- eess Vjotoria, now a Queen upon whose dominions the sun never sets. Strik ing was the contrastin the condition of the sleeper and her who watched by her grave, the one a peasant’s daughter in her dreamless slumber, the other a child who ere many years hod passed over her head, was to take her place among the rulers of the nations.—SaL Evening Pott Kentucky Election.
