To the Citizens of Rome.
The undersigned would take this
method of tendering their “ sincere
thanks to tho citizens of Rome, for the
material ‘‘aid and comfort" extended to
us in our recent misfortune, and also
for tho warm sympathy, and many acts
of kindness shown us. and may they
have the satisfaction' of seeing “the

many days."

Cool Weather.—Since tho rain on
^.Sunday last the- weather has boen de
lightfully cool. Mgnday, Tuesday and
Wednesday wore what Alexander Smith
would call stragglers from the files of
October. In the mornings and even
ings fires have been comfortable, if not
necessary to comfort. The old adago
might be reversed and read, “That is a
good wind that blows nobody any ill,*
for we tear this chango will produce
sickness. And again, a few days ago
there was too little rain for tho corn, now
there lias been too much for the cotton.—
It is hard to please us mortals, especial
ly tho fanners.

“Tho Roino Courier, which has liith-
orto boen a Democratic journal, announ
ces that it will, during tho present can
vass, support the nominees of the Con
stitutional Union Party."
Wo cannot supposo that the Reporter,
which is of the same way of thinking ns
ourself, would wilfully and maliciously
start an “evil report” concerning ut.—
We, therefore, cannot indulge a spirit
of resentment, but ask our Alabama
contemporary to correct the mistake it
has made by charging tho Courier with
having “hitherto boen a Democratic jour*

Thursday last, for boating his wife.
B&“We are glad to see among other
improvements in our county that a
bridge is in process of construction
over Horseleg creek near its riiouth.—
We know of no place where it has been
more needed, for heretofore the creek
has been impassable at the ford after
every heavy rain. The Inferior Court
could not have expended a few hundred
Fr dollars more judiciously, or moreadvan-
' tageously to « large j>ortion of the citi
zens of the county.

The “Murder” at Long Branch.N.J.
Tiie Long Branch mystery is a mystery
no longer. The affair turns out to be
simply a hoax, concocted by tho ser
vants at one of the hotels, who procured
some blood and a quantity of hair from
a barber's shop, and mixing them to
gether, smeared the mixture over a club
and a boat’s sail, and thus caused a be
lief that an atrocious muitfer had been
committed.
