The Southerner Sold)
Not at public outcry, but fit private
-sale. Some wags, one not far from the
Southerner office, having induoed the
"incredulous” Editor that we had been
■W*. made the victim of the "Calmut of
Peace” hoax, he appoints himself
committee of investigation and makes
the wonderful discovery that it was just
what we said it was, a mere-sham. We
•‘knew it at the time,” and took partic
ular pains so to denominate it in order
that none but the very "unsuspecting”
should bo gulled, and wo expected to
take in a few of that description, but
little thought our neighbor was such a
"curious and unsuspecting Edito r
Another Curiosity.
On Wednesday afternoon we, in com
pany with a few others, were invited by
a friend to partake of one of the finest
looking water-melons we had seen this
season. The very sight of it put our
mouths, not our eyes, in an aqueous humor,
and what added to its deliciousness was
the label on it in most delicate pen
manship—“To Mr. from the
Ladies." We gathered around like so
many statues of Impatience smiling at
the melon, when our host, with a skill
•which evinced a thorough acquaintance
with “Burton’s Anatomy of melan”—
•(wo have no use for the rest that word)
made an incision with his knife and
with an air of deliglticd hospitality lnid
open to our eager eyes—a peek of com
meal.
Although wo can establish this fact by
a half dozen credible witnesses, wo cau-
'tion “a number of papers in the State”
not to copy this “notice” until the
Southerner has made an investigation
and solved.the mystery, if it can be
done. To aid him in the understak
ing we would suggest that the melon
was raised in a cornfield, and also that
wlion the label was removed it disclos
ed a plug about two inches square
which seemed to have been cut out
and carefully replaced. What’s the so
lution, neighbor f

The gentleman from whose letters wa

writes fjtam Gainesville, Ga.,on the lith
Inst., that “Crops in Rail county are
good. 'Politics quiet. Bell will get his
party vote. No Douglas organization
here. Rut one map, of whom I have
heard, is suspected qf Douglasism. They
are exceedingly scarce and scattering
in Gwinnett. Bell, I think, will lose
little or nothing in this portion of the
State. The Democratic pe$ty will not
'walk longer in the counsels’ of the
Augusta Constitutionalist until lhat paper

If a Breehinridger will write thus
about Bell’s prospects what must they

Plenty of Grain in tub North
west.—The ^Wisconsin papers say that
State will produce this year 20,000,000
• bushels of wheat, and it is said that
.Minnesota will export more grain this
year than the total yield for four years
past. The Chicago Press says the
yunount of surplus corn which Illinois
can spare out of the crop now mrairing
is immense, ard it would be difficult to
exaggerate it. That does not look
muoh like famine. We will need Borne
Of that corn in this section.
says:
We are unable to account in any way
for the phenomena in the appearance
of the moon, os mentioned in the fol
lowing communication. Several others,
we have learned, at different places,
saw the same or very similior appear-
anoes. It is proper for us to say, now-
ever, to those here or at a distanco who
are unacquoitTOd with the author of
the communication, Dr. J.M. Low, that
we have known him several years, and
always regarded him as a gentleman of
intelligence and veracity. .
We hope to hear from him again, in
description of other appearances men
tioned ; and from others who saw the
same either in description, or extras
sion of opinion as to the causes.
Corn Grove, July 30, I860.
Editor Republican:—As there has been
ajihenomena, one knows not what, but
Wonderful beyond all woderourf meas
ure, I have thought it appropriate, by
your kind indulgence, fq so far trespass
upon your time and that of your nu
merous readers, as to record the most
singular phenomenon that hai eve -oc-
cuned since the foundations of the
world, as far as I am acquainted. I
have reference to the remarkable freaks
of the moon, that so lately exhibited
themselves, and which have caused such
intense excitement in the public mind.
During the last quarter of the moon,
on the lltli inst, the curious freaks first
manifested themselves.. The moon’s
time of rising being about midnight.
The first movement or alternation of
the position of the moon, is by turning
a complete summersault or 4 by chang
ing its convexity to the Noith, instead
of the South its natural position. It re
mains in that position but an instant
before its freaks are still more curious.
It then dissolves as it were and forms
itself into little round balls, half dozen
in number, apparently about two inches
in diameter. It remains in that post
tion but a short time, when it assumes
its natural shape, producing all the
prismatic colors of the Solar Spectrum.
We might goon to greater length in
naming other freaks that have been
seen in connection with those already
named, but we have no more time at
present to devote to the subject.
Weshnllnot attempt to theorize or
philosophize upon these remarkable
phenomena. If we did, wo would ex
plain it ns one of the signs spoken of by
our Saviour that is to precede the ond
of time.
If any person doubts the authentici
ty ot tne foregoing, it can be establish
ed by competent witnesses.
I do not suppose many persons saw it,
os it took place late at night.

Exciting Times at ftlcConncIlsburg Pa.
McConnei.lsbl'ro, Pa. Aug. 11.—The
Democracy held a county meeting here
lust night, at which a regular skirmish
was indulged in between the Douglas
and Breckinridge parties. Much bitter
feeling prevailed, and the meeting broke
up in a row.
During the absence of the editor of
the Democrat, Mr. Sunsdn, at Cresson,
tho Breckinridge party entered thee
office of thnt newspaper, mutilated the
forms, run up the Breckinridge flag and
issued an edition of tho pnper under
that banner.
The afTair has' created considerable
excitemnnt.
A personal rencontre also took place,
last night, after the meeting between
Mr. Sanson and G. A. Smith, a Breck
inridge attorney. Sanson gave Smith
the lie, when the latter collared him.—
Tho parties wero then seperated.
