Aa Agent wanted for this place. iG. J. FOREACRE, Atlanta Agent for Ga. The Temperance Cause. The Temperance cause which for a whiff seemed to have died out, lias acquired now vigor, and societies are now springing up all over tlio country. One was organized in this place on the 18th of last Junp and now numbers twenty-six members, with accessions at ■every meeting. It is in a flourishing condition and its friends are greatly encouraged at the prospect of accom plishing much good in reclaiming from ruin those who by their own resolution alone cannot resist the temptation which continually presents itself. We call the attention of our citizens to tiiis society in our midst and bespeak their good will and material aid'. Revival in Summerville.'—A revival of religion has been in progress in the Presbyterian church at Summerville, Chattooga Co., for two or three weeks post, during which thirty five persons were united to the church with a pros pect of an increase of that number.— The meetings will be protracted in the Methodist church. Not a Curiosity. On monday afternoon wo recieved a •tnossago from our friend who invited us ‘to-the watermelon feast lost week, to “come up there and help him cat (i fine cako.” Wo said we were afraid there W(»S meal in it, but being assured to the contrary wo went. - It was With ninny ' foiobodings that wo saw the knife glide through tiic snowy and elaborate orna ments on its surface, and it was not t:&- til we hud the additional evidence of our sense of tusto that we were ful ly convinced thatpursight had not been deceived. This \vas also from “the la- dies,” and was the best proof that they could make excellent cake as well ns play a capital joke. Wo freely forgave them the latter and will ever “bless their sweet souls.’’ As to our host, wo will always be his friend us long as he is such' a favorite with tho Indies.— ■“Long may ho wave.” Latest News. An Interesting Public Document. • Washington, Aug. 19.—In response to the proposition from the Govern ment or Great Britain for the suppres sion of the slave trade to the coast of Cuba and the substitution ' of Coolies, our Government has given ife deoided dissent. Great Britait is reminded that she is bound ,by treaty and a subsidy from Spain to prevent toe African Slave trade, while Spain - complains if United States cruisers enter Cuban waters, and has recently, pro tea ted against it. 1 iTho President considers the' Coolie trade a horrible traffic, and if once in troduced into United States; would not only corrupt Christianity but would ma- terialy compete with white labor in the free States of this Confederacy. The document is one of great interest. ^ New Orleans, Aug. 19.—Dates from Galveston to the. 18th inst, have been received. The principal hotel at Hen derson, and all the business houses but one in that town have been destroyed by fire. The loss is between $175,000 and $250,000. - Elections in Texas. Galveston, Texas, Aug. 17.—G. M. Flournoy, Esq., the Democratic candi date for Attorney General of the State, has a large minority in tho counties beard from. Nrw Orleans, Aug. 20.—The schoon er Araminta with Ruatan dates to the 9th inst., arrived here to-day. The Ar aminta brought the crew of the schoon er Clifton of Walker's expedition, which was captured by a British war steamer at Belize. General Walker landed und took Truxillo, (a seaport town of Central America, State of Honduras. The pop ulation with tlie adjacent hamlets is four thonsand. Its harbor,on tho bay qf Truxillo, is defended by several forts.) There was only one gun fired by the troops, and two of Walker’s men were wounded in the excitement. Seward prcnching the Irrepressible . Conflict. Wo give below a portion of the speech of Hon. W. H. Seward recently delivered at Boston, when he was intro duced to the audience by Gov. Banks. He boldly advocates the “higher law” and- “irrepressible conflict” dootrines, and pluccs Lincoln squarely and firmly on them. . I know that citizens of Massachusetts, as well as citizens of other States, have attempted to drive the diciples of that illustrious teacher from their policy.— But it is to-night that I am free to con fess that whenever any man, wherever he might be found, whether he was of Northern or Southern birth, whether lie was of the •‘solid men of Boston” or of tiic light men of Mississippi, have assailed me for tiic maintenance of those doctrines, 1 have sought to com mune witli his spirit, and to leurn front him whether the tiling in which 1 was engaged was well and worthily done.— What a commentary upon tho wisdom of man is given in this single fact, that fifteen years only after the death of John Quin eg Adams, the people of the United /States, who hurled himfrom power and f om place, are calling to the head of the nation,to the very scat from which he was expelled, Abraham Lincoln — (enthusiastic cheers) — whose claim to that scat is that he confesses the obli gation of Vtat higher law—(applause)— which the Huge of Quincy proclaimed, and that he aoows himself, for weal or woe, for life or death, a soldier on the side of freedom in the irrepressible conflict between freedom and slavery. (Prolonged cheering.)— Tiiis, gentlemen, is my simple confes sion. I desire, now, only to say to you that you have arrived at the last stage of this conflict before yon reach the triumph which is to inaugurate this great policy into the govern ment of the United States. (Cheers.) New Douglas Paper.—Wo have re ceived the first number of the National Democrat published at Centro, Ala., and edited by J. W. Ramsey, Esq. It lias - tho names of Douglas and Johnson at its head and enters the contest with vigor, ■ Correction.—Mr. J. J. Lathrop, Steward of the Deaf and Dumb Asylum rat Cave Spring calls our attention to an error in the statement, taken by us from the Augusta 2rue Democrat, of the reeont accident to Miss Slack. It was not caused by the explosion of a cam- phene lamp, but by a bottle of camphor brooking in her hand and igniting. He nssures us neither oamphene nor any other fluid lamps are used about tha Institution. Account of the Wheat Crop.—The following extraot from a letter, received by a gentleman in this oity, gives a most favorable acoount of tho wheat.prosneoto in the Wests "The whole West, from the Ohio to the Missouri, is one vast grain field.— Times ought to be good now if ever. Ono of tho sharpest flour tutmufooturors in Ohio, told me yesterday that this State would have thirty millione bush els of wheaMlve pillions more than ever raised in Ohio.
