feature is durability. A Plow completed

the slavery question:

“Humanity to the slave, no less than

Here then is the policy of the Bell

A letter from one of the' officers of
the English war steamer senttoDeir-el
Hama, in Syria, to rescue the women
and children, gives an interesting ac
count of - the same. It says: !!
We only had about eight boats, but
these we began to load with all dispatch
every poor woman and child having to
bo carried through a tremendeous surf
to the boats. However, our blue jack-
ots worked well and cheerfully, only I
must say that they very unfairly gave
preference to the pretty girls, and when
any old mother wanted, fo be carried off
I was oblinjf fodder same manpapp-

ohildren were badly wounded. Thoy
had been wounded while clinging to

were killed. As soon as a boat wssioa-
i sent off to the ship and the
poor wretohes stowed os close as they
would lio on board, and then the boat
was sent book. After two hours’ hard
work our docks were packed as close as

Stampede of Abolitionists from Appo
mattox
Several months since wo published
the fact that three Yankees had estab
lished themselves at Pamplin’s Depot,
in Appomattox county, for thp purpose
of engaging in manufacturing of pipes,
on an extonsivo scale. At the same
time wo slated, on reliable authority,
that all of tho parties were abolitionists,
deeply died in the wool, and should not
be suffered thus to monopolize a . trade
upon which a large number of poor peo
ple were entirely dependent for a- liv-.
fng, In a few days after the publica
tion alluded to, we received' at letter
from the parties, in tvliiclf the- charge
that they were unsound upon tlfo slave
ry question tvns most bitterly deniod,
and, if we hud taken tlieffword for it,
no truer Southern men were tobe found
in tho broad limits of tho Union, al
though they were Ytnwtees. ' But the
sequel shows that wo were’ correctly in
formed os to their Abolitionism, for one
day Inst week they openly and boldly
proclaimed themselves Black Republi
cans, and avowed their intention to sup
port Lincoln. As soon us this avowal
liocamo noised about, tho country got.
too hot for them, and thoy were advis
ed to pack up their traps and travel.
Without making their intention to
leave known to any one, they secretly
shipped off their plunder', wives, chil
dren, &e„ and on Friday went to Mr.
Pamplin to borrow a horse. He, unsus
picious of any felonious intent, loaned
it to them, since which time they nor
the horse have been seen or heard from.
)fficers are in pursuit of them in every
direction, but as yet tho whereabouts of
the fugitives are unkuown.—Lynchburg

Geu. Walker and his Designs,
The Now York Bun, ajournul which
has long sympathized with the fiUibus-
tering movements pf Gen. Walker, and
which may therefore bo regarded os
good authority, says of his present ad
venturous expedition :
Our own opinion is, that his plan is to
effect a revolution in Honduras, where
he has some friends, and after estab
lishing his authority there, to enter the
Nioaraguan territory, and attempt, the
overthrow of the Government. Trux-
illo, where Walkor landed, is the prin
cipal port of. Honduras, on the Atlantic
side. Its population number* soibo
four to five thousand persons, and the
harbor is defended by several forts.—
With such means of defence itisel
that Walker’s party met with scarcely
any resistance. Either their landing
was a complete surprise; or there was
treason among the officers in oommand
of the Honduras troops. That Walker
will be able to maintain hia present
movement we do not -believe, and it is
nofcimprobnblc that the naval forces of
Great'Aritahahk that quarter wilMhtar*
fere in behalf'of 8n
- 'Honduras offers an inviting field for
fillibutter enterprise. It has an area of
,000 sqoaroi
m up on tho beach, .aw
were still 700 unfortunate worn
children on the beach with hardljr 'e
stitch of canvass on, and they werer all
footsore, having traveled 80 milea- the
previous day, and some of them .bad
not touehed any food-for two or three
days. I sent for the Druse chief, and
made him premise me to take care of
them until the morrow, when I said we
would come again and bring off tho rept
of them, as tho Gannet was firing gunB
for my recall.
I went off, leaving them nil horribly
disappointed on the beach, poor things!
When I wont on board I found almost
every moh ofthe deck covered. Wo had
seyen hundred women and children on
board and only about a score of men
who hod escaped. It was the most dis
tressing sight -I ever Baw or hope to peo
again, for now that the immediate fear
of death was removed, they began to
feel conscious of the full oxtentxif their
sufferings—homes burned down and
all their male relations massacred, and
they began to scream, tear their hair off
in handrulls, and beat their breasts in a
most horrible manner. Wo did all we
could to soothe them. Officers and
men are vieing with each other in feed
ing them withfiisouit and giving them
clothes, Ao. I could tell you hundreds
of anecdotes about them, but must re
serve them, for another time, as we are
off directly. Suffice it to say, vro took
them to Beyrout, and after»«oiS|nnhlB
' poor things, wet through
as they were, landed them next morn
ing, and the gunboat was sent up, and
brought down' the remaining seyen hgn-
dred that night.
