Tom Thumb is to take a wife from that city ; not only "one of Portland’s fair est daughters,” but “tho handsome and accomplished daughter of one of our oldest and most esteemed citizens.”— She is said to he “very pretty, below tlie ordinary height, ami heiress to quite a largo estate.” Speedy Hetruiction.—Tlie Jefferson (Texas) Herald tells the fate that befel the villians who fired tho town of Hen derson, on the5th instant. Perceiving themselves pursued, they turned to fight, when one of them was shot dead from his horse, and tho other two were taken and hung forthwith; Singular Effect of a Prohibition. A most extraordinary case is now try ing beforeoneof the French courts. An M. D. died, leaving un express order tliut lie should ho buried in church, and a handsome sum paid to the priests On condition that “nobody should laugh while the sorviuo was going on.” The intelligent defunct had observed that Undertakers and priests permit them selves very often to take hilarious liber ties with death, and lie was determined that lio should be buried with tlie grav ity appropriate to tho grave. Of course the odd request got noised abroad : all tho villago came to the l'unouil; and everybody keeping an eye on cverylwidy else to see that nobody should so much as wink, the natural result followed. A fat priest near tlie coffin was the first to break down; tlie choir hoys,in tlie frailty of their youth, followed the fntprie.-t; tl • minor canons, trying to stop tlie choir boys, or at least to make them ‘‘laugh out of the wrong side of their mouths,” caught tlie oontagicn, and began to shake their sides: tho deacons wont off next into-a full guffaw, and finally -the cure himself was conquered and choked in his handkerchief. In short, a mer rier interment was never witnessed. It was the joke of the season. But the heirs, not liking tlie sport, have refused to pay the clergy for their rollicking Services, and the matter is now in Court, where it will doubtless cense to be a laughing matter to anybody but tho lawyers. » g©“0.
