mrr
The Signs of tho Times in the North.
Having recently returned from a trip
to New York- and the Eastern States it
affords us great pleasure to make known
the present aspect of political, mntters
in tliat section. It is highly: gratifying
to all good conservative men - and true
patriots of sK sections of the country,
to see the present wholesome tendency :
of tho conservative portion of tho peo
ple in the non-siaveholding States.—
Not until recently hive tho parties op
posed to black republicanism felt the
necessity of a combination in order to
defeat that pernicious, sectional organi
zation. Until a few weeks since, 1 the
Douglas, Bell and Breckinridge parties
in the State of New York, each hoped
to be able, by some strange revolution
of popular feeling, to early the State
for the candidate or their own choice,
and thus single handed -to defeat- Lin
coln. But these hopes were soon dissi
pated, and like genuine patriots who
love country mof,e.Uw n party, they at
once took steps for uniting all parties
that are opposed to purely sectional or
ganizations, with the determination to
crash the horrid blaok monster, that,be
cause of their own internicino warfare,
has, almost without opposition) been
coiling itself about the great body pol
itic. A “Union for the sake of the
Union” in Now York is now full, cor
dial and complete. Tho only excep
tion to.this, is in regard to the leaders of
the Breckinridge- party—the masses of
this party have already given in their
allegiance—to the Union Ticket.—
There is no Breokiuridge electoral tick
et in the State and no probability that
there will be. The leaders of this party
ore only holding off, to get ten of their
men on the Union Tioket before they
coniess allegiance. It would probably
be better that tbria favor should bo>
granted them-; but, whether it is or
not. they are powerless so far. asjany
factious opposition, they might under
take to make, to the grand Union
movement that .is now sweeping every
thing before it.-.
In New York there is now no quart*!
between the friends of Bell, Douglas
and Breckintidgb but they ate all leav
ing in abeyance old party prejudices
and making a vigorous warfare upon
the common enemy. And, what ia true
here, extends in a large degree to all
the Eastern States. Tho whole tenden
cy of public opinion now is towards the
formation of the Union and the Sec
tional parties. The conservative peo
ple Of the Nottft kr6' t begtiniljhg'. to real
ise that if tho Union is to be saved they
havegot, to do it;' In Massachusetts

have set upaguinstth|it powerful party
which threatens to tread the constitu-
tibn'tender foot, and to involve the coun
try in widespread ruin. Nothing can
save tho couiitry from great troubles but
tho uprising Of .that love of the Union
which lies deep in the popular Heart.—
Let that rise in its majestic swell, and it
will overwhelm the enemies of the con
stitution. Party standards flaunt the
air in vain; the magic of party names is
gone; thenscendancy of party managers
over tho masses is at an end; nothing
can rcuch the hearts of the people but
the dear names of the country and the
Union.
Tho present canvass for tho Presiden
cy does show that, old party lines arc al
most obliterated in the * great strug
gle.
When Mr. Buchanan came ip to pow
er I felt it to be my duty to support his
administration, and ,1 said so publicly.
I declined to contest with his friends
the places which they held, stating it as
my opinion that tho conservative force
of the country ought not to be impaired,
but that it was our duty to forget past
political strifes and antagonisms, and do
what we might to strengthen the bands
of the party , in power, in view of the
great impending conflict to be fought in
1800. That position I have maintained
until recently; others have held it be
sides myself; but unhappily, tire great
party which achieved the signal triumph
four years since is now torn by fierce
dissensions, and stands utterly powerless
to contend against that formidable, or
ganization, wnlqh ranges its ImttyUions
along thp whole line which divides the
North •from the South. Neitho'r Mr.
Douglas nor Mr. Breckinridge con ap
peal - to the allegiance of those who com-
pose their party; neither can concentrate
the strength of that party. Mr. Breck-
ihridae is'the exponent of my views; he
stan Is upon a platform which I approve.
I admire him personally, and I am very
fitfre'in&tfhe is not in the slightest degreo
tainted with that disloyalty to the Union
with which Be is charged. I must say,
too, With equal candor, that I believe the
accusations brought against Mr. Doug
las art'greatly overstrained. He is a
patriotic ahd consistent statesmen. Still
it is alctir that tho nntagonistical atti
tude of these two gentlemen, and the
fierco conflict that is waged between
their friends, must put it out of tho pow-
or of either of them to detent Mr. Lin
coln: while the very dissension in tho
ranks of a party to which many of us
gave our support from the mere fact that
it was in position, confronting the ene
mies of the constitution and turning its
guns upon them, now releases us from
any sort of obligation to hold our
ground longer as allies. When the ar
