presentation of banner
The Young Ladies of Rome and vi
cinity presented a Banner to the Bomb
Light Guards on Friday the 2Cth inst.
The following are the speeches deliver-
on the occasion. —
Miss Joe Stewart, in behalf of the
Ladies aocompanied the presentatibn
with the following remarks:
Gentlemen of the Light Guardi, I am
commissioned by ibe Young Ladief of
this oity, to present this Flag to the
"Rome light Guards.” We wish it re
ceived as an earnest of the interest We feel
in the prosperity pf the Company. We
feel assured, that the motto we have
chosen will meet your approval, it be
ing expressive of the patriotism that
should fill the hoart, and sway the ac
tions of eveiy true hearted American.
The liberties we prised so deerly, are
shared by us all, but on you rests the
glorious task of maintaining those
cherished rights.
Heaven forbid that this Banner shall
ever wave over the horror* of a civil
war, but if conflict is inevitable, and oir-
cum stances shall make it necessary,
then be itywr ctpecial caret hat it waves in
triumph. . * ,
Capt. Mogruder, on receiving, the
Banner said:
In receiving this beautiful flag from
your hands my fair friends, 1 feel that
any wordnof mine will but feebly ex
press onr gratitude for the kindness and
good will you have shown to onr com
pany by bestowing on ns this highly
prized gift.
, -UUta*y- tolta na that. tho Athenian
women were accustomed to crowfi With
gat lands their victorious generals, and
successful orators. I remember too
that the daughters Of England have
raised_a commemorative Statue to Wel
lington, composed of the captured can
non of his splendid victories. And
Southern matrons and Southern maid
ens pleading through the graoefrul elo
quence of a Northern orator have
rescued Mt. Vernon from dilapidation
and decay and made it the trysting spot
of the nation. In beautifril accordance
with these examples hare our country
women ever been foremost in rewarding,
by some appropriate token, every vir
tuous and heroio set,and patriotism has
always found its.truest, purest friend in
the love and sympathy of woman.—
Though we may never have deeerved a
shadow of suoh distinction from you,
our fair towns-women, yet you have
made us the recipients of a gift which
should be dear to us in our. character of
soldiers, from whatever source it may
have been obtained, but doubly dear
when coming from those to whom many
of us are bound by the strongest ties of
relationship, of association, and of ar-
rtcTioN. And now, whilst returning to
you our sinoere and heartfelt thanks,
let me assure you thatas long ss we have
heard to love or strength to wield a
sword, that, should necessity require it,
the Rome Light Guards will be ever
ready to strike in your defence, end to
tna.ntqin unsullied the honor of this
flag, your beauteous gift-
And further when we behold its t bright
stars glittering o’er our tanks may it
serve to remind us,that though you
have warm heartaand approving smiles,
with which to reward the brave and
true, yet youbave only pity for the weak,
contempt for the coward, and scorn for
the traitor.
Gent* of the Rome light Guard*;—It It
said that when, in some dark hour of
our revolutionary struggle, when army
after army hod been dispersed and over
come, and the discouragement of defeat
had -well nigh crushed our hope of liber
ty, that the Father of his Country, rising
above the oaree and calamities by whioh
he was surrounded, exolaimed: ."Give
me but a banner, and thetneons to plant
that banner, and l.will yet roily wound
me an army which wiU raise up our
bleeding country and set her free!"
We, fellow-soldier* have, by the kind-
nets of. our "friends, been provided with
a banner. And now let os, who are de
scendants of that gallant army whioh
rallied round Washington in the hour
of need, resolve and pledge mwseives,
this day, that should our country's no-
cess!ties evST call us to the duty, that
wo will cat&r round this standard and
with our strength strive to repel
the threa^anjfi g foe.
