Monday evening in the. Rep. Ball, on
the condition and prospects of our coun
try, since the election" of a Block Re
publican lo the Presidency. The speech

livery, and called forth the most rap

Hitherto Mr. Cobb has never taken
an active part in politics, and liis opin
ions, fop that reason, are received with
the more confidence. . Such at all
events, appeared to be the feeling of
tlioso who heard .him that evening,

the expression. His effort was mas
terly beyond example. Ho .reviewed
the state of parties at tho North, and
the aggressions to which the South had
long yielded from revercnce for the
Union.. But now the spell was broken;
danger was at our firesides; the enemy,
was clutching at our throats, and was

more Just and righteous quarrel than

this righteous cause is in danger, ’ from
the i rash and imprudent conduct of
some of its most sealous friends. There
can be no doubt but a large majority of
the people of Georgia are determined to
resist, to the last extremity, theingu*
guration of a Black Republican Admin
istration; add the inforcemont of Block
blican measures; but they wish

But-some of our over sealous friends
are unwilling to wait for tho solemn and
dignified movements of a Convention;
that is too sloW; and serious, and dig
nified for them; they would prefer to
hasten the'crilis by some act of the
Legislature, or by some outburst of an
excited mob. We warn all such that
they krb injuring the cause they in
tend to promote. The freemen of
Geoivia are jealous ot their rights, and
will msist on exercising them in their
own woy, - Any action of tho State to
be "effectual, must obtain the approba
tion of alarae majority of our citizens.
It is then or the utmost importance in
any movement we make as a State,
that wo carry with us the confidence
and approbation of tho i>cople. With
out this, no cause can be ultitnately

We Understand that "a. duel war
fought on Wednesday afternoon, near
Hopkins’ plantation, between Mr. OtiV-
ier Carriere and Dr. De St. Romes; tine
same who bad a difficulty and shooting
affair at a school examination on Ram
