only its leading merits: With four wings,
two small and two large, it can be converted
inta Seven different Plows, all of which are
very necessary for the cultivation of dif
ferent crops. And another very important
feature is durability. A Plow completed

cost about Three Dollars to put it up. An
Agency will soon he established ill Rome,

Who MnJ, Andenei is, and What he
has done.
1 he leader Lns a Liograpltical sketch
oi tuo present comiuander at Fort
Moultrie. We copy a passago :
“Muj. Anderson is now about fifty-
six years old, nnd ivnsborn in Kentucky
entering the Military Acudnmy from
thatStete, and graduating with distinc
tion, on June 3Uth, 1825. The record
of his military service shows that he was
promoted to a first lieutenancy in 1833,
mid made captain by brevet in 1838
for gallantry and successful strategy in
in the war ngainsi the Florida Indians.
In the sums year ho wns appointed As
sistant Adjutant-General, with the rank
of captain—the captaincy itself not
coming until the October of 1841, and
his present rank of Major only reaching
him Inst year.
“His bstsorvice, previous to Ilia tak-
in command at Fort Moultrie, wns a
member of tho commission ordered last
summer by Congress, to inquire into tho
manner of instruction at the West
Point Military Academy. Tho labors
of that commission, in which Major
Anderson performed his part, have al
ready been laid before Congress.
“In physique, the Mujor is about five
foot nine inches in height; his'figure is
well . et nnd soldierly; his hair is thin
and turning to iron gray ; his complex
ion Bwathy; his eye dark and intelli
gent; his nose prominent and well
formed. A stranger would read in his
air and appearance, determination and
an exaction of what was due to him.—
lie has a good deal of manner. In in
tercourse he is very courteous, and his
rich voice nnd abundant gesticulations
go well together. He is always agreea
ble nnd gentlemanly, firm and digni
fied, a man of undaunted courage, and
as a true soldier may be relied on to
obey ciders and to do his duty.
“Major Anderson has also performed
a large amount of tho staff duty inci
dent to the service a few years since,
nnd before it was made distinct from
duty in the lino. He acted as Assis
tant Inspector of the Illinois Volunteers,
serving with Abraham Lincoln in the
“Muck Hawk’’ war of 1832. He was
Assistant Instructor and Instructor of
Artillery at tho Military Academy in
the years lSaS-’G and '7, and wns aid-
dr camp to Major. General .Scott in
1838.
“During tho Mexican war the Major
endured all tho labors and dangers of
the campaign, being severely wounded
in the assault on the enemy’s works at
Molino del Roy, and received brevet
majority ‘for gallant and meritorious
conduct in that action.’ Mqjor Ander
son has also rceived from the Govern
ment many evidences of its trust and
confidence, other than those bestowed
by the War Department.
Fort Hlmi’ter.- -This fort is built in
the water, one thousand yards from the
land. It can only be attacked, there*
fore, from water craft. It is just finish
ed, and is one of the strongest works in
Christendom ; mounted with thirty-two
pound cannon, and supplied with one
hundred rounds of ammunition, for
each gun. It is covered, bomb proof,
and can only be entered by the embra
sures, which an attacking force must
crawl through, one man nt a time, and
honee two men at one of these oould
defend it against five hundred.
With a ganison of one hundred aud
fifty men, it could only be successfully
attacked by siege batteries and hea
vy ordnance, and then could with
stand a seigo of weeks, or, perhaps
months.
The guns of this fort command Fort
Moultrie, nnd could reduce it to a heap
of ruins in twenty-four hours.
0^’There is many a man who is a
foot and don’t know it—who is tho
laughing stock of all who meet him,
anti cannot see it. Such a man is the
only one who really enjoys himself—
who passes through lifo at ease with
himself, and at peace with all tbe world
His mind is a thing ot repose—calm
and unruffled, like the feathers of a
dead rooster. His bliss is os profound
as the wisdom of an owl. He is an an
imated nothing, whom it would be ar
rant sacrilege to insult. Tbe conscience
of a fool ib a dull, inert sense of repose
—nothing more.

of the ago in which be li res, must de-
E end on the generosity of the few for
is bread, and the malice of many for
his tamo.
Ka^-Thoso who would eryoy good

to bo a good exercise for tho health,
but many a poor wretch has corns to

* N« Navy.
It is continually thrown ip our teeth
by the |S or them Press in their argu
ments against a Southern Confederacy,
that theSouth has no navy—not a sail
or or a ship of war. Granted but has
the North any f Tho navy belongs as
much to the South as the North—nei

in ft, as wefrne in other public property
that we destfc the eo-operetion of the

A Windfall.— It Is stated that.Gon.
Harney, by the decease of his wife re
cently in Paris, has come in possession,
as tho property of himself and children!
$5,000,000. He is a little rising fifty
years old, and by much service and ex
posure, is somewhat broken in health,
lie is the fourth in the list of our array
officer..-• Scott, Wool and Twiggs com
ing before him.
Count Thiu.—Count what? Why
count tho mercies thut have been quiet
ly falling in your path through every
period in your history. Down they
come, every morning and every even
ing, as ant'd messengers from the Fath
er of light to tell you of your be t
friend m heaven. Have you fived these
years wasting mercies, treading them
under your feet, and consuming them
every day, and never yet realized from
whence they came ? Do you ask what
are these mercies ? Ask the sun-beam,
the raindrop, tho stars or the queen of
night. What is the propriety of stop
ping to play with a thorubush when you
may just as well pluck sweet flowers
and oat pleasant fruits? Happy is he
who looks at the bright side of life, of
providence and of rovelation, who
avoids thorns, thicket and boughs un
til his Christian charaoter is such, that
if he cannot improve, he may pass
among them without injury.
There are a class of people in
the world that we feel a genuine com-
e assion for, simply because they go a-
out with a spruce “don’f-I-look-well-
enough ’’ air, when all who see them
are laughing at their appearance. We
refer to tho “dyed in the wool” men
and women, who have been ‘iarier-ous-
ly’ handled, and of whom a New York
paper says—“ A Yegiment may be en
countered any fine day on Broadway
with that dead thot blacking look which
hair dye gives. Nobody is deceived,
but the quantity of that forlorn swindle
sold must be immense.” That’s a fact,
and yet the poor dupes think they
are all right,
Firk-Proof Woms>t—The number of
serious accidents to women from fire
fenders, renders it neeespary that eith
er they or their gossamer clothing
should be rendered fire-proof. One
ounce of phosphate of ammonia to a
quart of water, is said to insure dress
es, and a company is about organizing
for tho insurance of the woman against
everything but an old flame, whioh no
lady is supposed to wisli to put out.
Shari- Tractics.—A German who had
$300 in gold deposited in a bank in
Springfield, Ill., stepped up to the coun
ter, presented bis certificate, and de
manded his gold. He was paid, when
lie said to the banker:
“Vot you gif for golt now, eh ?”
“Five per cent,” was the response,
“Oh, yaw, dat ish goot. I sell you
dese for goot paper monish."
“All right,” was the reply, and $315
in currency was handed the ex-deposi
tor, who took $15 from his roll of notes
and handed back $300, saying, “I depos
its dat mit you. You’re goot I sees.”
And taking his new certificate, lm de
parted with bis $15 premium,
