On yesterday, Kriduy, So; lorn Jones,
; ji u Capf. of the Folk cyuj^v Ri|
Lieutenant ColoneT of ti
day of our corps in camps, and matters
begin to assume a sort of matcr-of-
coursc air—a homelike feeling of con
tentment and good nature is now scon
upon the countenances of "the soldier
men,” instead of the uneasy state and
disagreeable strangeness or yesterday.
Camp Broun is five nules below Ma
rietta, and lias hitherto been known as
the Smyrna Camp Meeting Ground. It
is n beautiful grove, now neatly cleared
off, and, in all respects, is a really de
lightful place. There are fourteen of
the old catnp meeting tents still' stand
ing and in tolerable condition. These
are occupied—two by the commissary
department—(one for provisions for
the men, the other for forage for hor
ses,) and the other twelve make very
comfortable quarters for the men—the
five officers of one company to a tent.
Besides these there are twelve canvass
tents,—each affording pleasant quarters
for one company.
Most of the day yesterday was spent
in the, to novices, rather disagreeable
duties of pitching camps, providing
camp equipage and furniture and the
labors of setting up fer house keeping
generally.
It was the writer’s fortune, in com
pany with Lieut. Hall, to bo the first
detached for guard duty. We were
posted to guard the commissaries quar
ters from 11$ A. M. to 12$ P. M., and
it was a weary pacing back and forth
we had of it, in the hot sun.
The arrangements not being com
plete, most of the messes had a sort of
picked up dinner yesterday, but since
then our meals have been wholesome
and good enough. The regular daily
rations for a mess of five, is : 6 lbs.
4 oi. beef, or 3 lbs. 6 oz. bacon ; 5 lbs.
10 oz. light bread; $ lb. rice; 5 oz. coffee;
9$ oz. sugar ; 1 gill salt; $ pint vinegar;
2 oz. soap and 2 candles. Those provi
sions and the camp furniture are all
furnished at the expense of the State.
Butter, eggs, vegetables, Ac., if had at
all, are at the expense of the respective
messes.
Gen. Phillips made a speech yester
day evening, in which he stated that
the reason the Governor had ordered
this encampment was, to prepare as
soon as possible, the Company officors
of the Brigade for actual service,.and
through them their respective Com
panies ; and he expressed the belief,
founded upon assurances from the Gov
ernor, that his command would be call,
ed into the field as soon os it, or any
companies of it, were sufficiently well
drilled to render it expedient to do so
He said the 4th Brigade was no “Home
Guard," but was organized for the pur
pose of doing service for the Confede
rate States, in Georgia or out of it, wher
ever they might be needed.

Alexandria, April 27.
Lincoln rcr of Monday says:
Rifle Battallion. IIo has re signed ana
another election is ordered on next
Monday.
Y ester-dny was a very oxciting day at
Camp Brown. At eleven o’clock all
turned out to escort Capt. Mays’ com
pany, the Toombs volunteers, of Cal
houn, called into service. Gen. Phillipe
made a short but very patriotic farewell
speech, which was appropriately re
sponded to by Capt. Mays. When at
the train a report was received that the
“Rome Light Guards” had beon order
ed out. Our boys huzzaed until they
could hardly speak ; they wore congrat
ulated by their friends and the excite
ment was kept up until late in the
evening when it was learned that the
report was false. It rained nearly all
the foienoon, but this did not keep the
men in their quarters. Several ladies
have visited tho camp from Marietta,
and yesterday there were seven from
Atlanta, and when they left were es
corted to the cars by two companies
from Atlanta, and the two from Rome.
The ladies of Marietta have tender
ed a complimentary dinner to the en
tire encampment, to be given on next
Wednesday, May Day. There will pro
bably be a crowd present on that occa
sion.
We have no time for further writing
at this present. Tho members of the
Rome companies send their compli
ments to all their friends. I).
Camp Brown, near Marietta, 1
1. }
Saturday, April 27th, 1861
Dear Courier :
The noise, confusion
and hubbub generally about a Military
camp of volunteers are plead in extenu
ation for the want of perspicuity and
method in these letters. The one da
ted April 24th was retained and, by
mistake, some sheets of blank paper
sent instead.
There are now as reportel twonty-
eight companies represented in the
encampment. The men are all in ex
cellent health and spirits, and are lear
ning the science of war as fast as pos
sible. There probably never was an
assemblage of men more eager to learn,
than are the officers at Camp Brown.
There is not in all the Camp a murmur
of complaint, nor any grumbling about
hard fare or tbo fatigues of duty. In
fact it would be very ungracious for
any one to find fault, for so far as the
acts of our excellent offioers, Gen.
Phillips and Major Capera, are concern
ed, /aidl.is a thing that cannot be found :
and, beside, the men are not disposed
to forge them.
The tactics of camp are regular, sys
tem and order prevailing in all things,
and business now moves on, not ex
actly “like clook work,” but yet
with as much precision as could be
expected from a volunteer corpg. Wo
Ladies Shooting.
Wo are pleased to observe a desire on
the part of the Ladies to learn the use
of the pistol. Many ladies of our ac
quaintance aie already skilled as marks
men. These are times when every
man, woman and child in the South
should be taught the use of the gun
The Vandals of the North have delibe
rately taken it In hand to subjugate us
Let us bo prepared to meet them. They
foolishly suppose that wo are weak and
unable to cope with them either in
skill, daring or numbers. It is true
they are superior in numbers, but as to
daring and skill they will find ere long
that they have been acting under
most woful delusion. As to their ad
vantage in numbers it will bo more than
counterbalanced by our climate, which
they cannot stand, us can the native
Southerners, and, in our more South
ern latitude they will dio like sheep
with the rot. Let us be up and doing
Lot every boy from the age ot 7 years
old and upwards be taught the use of
arms, and let every body in the land be
furnished with a Colt's revolver. The
Yankees no doubt, expoct to excite in
surroction in our midst, and thereby
force large numbers of our soldiers to
stay at home. But they will find that
the women and boys, and the old men
of the land will take care of the no
groes, who will be made to make bread
to feed our soldiers and our families
We have already the best marksmen
the world.
Almost every boy 10 years old could
in an emergency bo made available
protecting our firesides. Let them be
still further encouraged and trained.—
The crisis is upon us, let us meet it
becomes the true sons of revolutionary
sires. It has been forced upou us, and
the mercenary scoundrels will find, and
that before one short month has expir
ed, they have undertaken an enter
prise of most gigantic dimensions. Wo
are ready to meet, with indomitable
energy, all the combined powers of ab-
olitiondom. Wo believo that God is
with us, and with conscious rectitude
of purpose we will dare defend our
firesides and homes, even though a
world in arms should come against us.
LINCOLN BECOMING MORE BEL
LIGERENT.

On the arrival of tliree hundred Vir

they would ho overpowered, fired the
armory and evacuated it. As soon as
this wa* done, the citizen* of Harper’s

and with the Shite troops, rushed on
ward to extinguish the lire and save the
property within the armory, which they
succeded in doing in a great measure.
All of the machinery was saved un

All ol the buildings at Harper’s Fer
