i tiuid than three years or the war, it was
| impossible for the Governor to comply
with the wish thus expressed to him,
unless the tender should be so changed
as to meet the requirements of the Pres

Therefore the Governor in compliance
with this request, and to meet the

the same time to all individuals und
companies, who should not desire to
enlist for the war, the privilege of re

About five hundred not satisfied with
the terms of enlistment withdrew, u
considerable number of whom having
slept one night upon the question re

Gov. Bi-own also stated in his address
that there were largo numbers applying
for admission into the Urigude, many
more than could be received. General
Phillips states that there are uow over

is therefore evident tliut so far from the

day and night, that I am really
doubt ns to what day of the week or
month this is. My own count makes
this Friday, and l have an indistinct
remembrance that the first day ol
this month iv.u, .Saturday, but lust night
a news boy bi-ought some papers into
this camp which he positively asserted'
were that day's paper. These were
dated Friday, June Tlh, and, as news
paper dates have been my calendar
lor the last five years, this was receiv
ed as "proof, strong as the con Anna
lions of holy writ,’' and, ns my honest
convictions yielding, I have dated this
letter ns above.
Our own movements have fully veri
fied the saying that ** large bodies
move slow." The order was to leavo
Richmond on Wednesday at 8 A, M.—
we did leave at 1J P. M.—the command
was to be ready to march from Sti-os-
burg yesterday at 8 A. M., we left the
camp at 10 and the towii at lOj A. ill
The Light Guards, however, "wish it
to be distinctly understood" that tho
delays were not their fault. Our camp,
i uin proud to state, has never been
live minutes behind time in filling the
order for any movement of the Regi
ment.
Yesterday came the "tug of war,”
not in deadly conflict with the enemy,
but in overcoming the distance—18
miles—from Sttasburg to this place.—
We learned early in the morning Unit
all could not ride on account of inadc-
quency in the means of conveyance
provided, and tho Light Guards were
one of the first companies that ottered
to walk ; the Oglethorpe Light Infantry
and tho Maoo<i Guards mado the sumo
proposition, but all the othor compa
nies rode iu large heavy wagons provi
ded for the purpose, and to carry tho
baggage. Col. Bartow highly compli’
mented tho companies that so cheer,
fully volunteered to perform this so.
vere duty. Our march was over a fine
macadamized road, iu'u direction alittle
West of North,'.end through one of the
most delightful countries l have seen,
and abounding in evidences of wealth
and refinement. Strasburg is at tho
terminus of Manassas Gap, nearly sur
rounded by high mountains—tho Blue
Ridge—and more beautifully picturesque
scenery I have not seen any whore, and
tho exceeding loveliness of the scenery
contiuucs unbroken from that place to
this. The Light Guards were honored
by being thrown in front and thus led
tho way iq the first heavy march of
the Ga. Regiment, We all stood tho
march much better than was anticipa
ted. Leaving Strasburg at 10} A. M.,
we only stopped four times—once a half
hour for dinnor, and three other times,
15 minutes each, to rest and get water,
and the balance of the time, until (>
'clock in the evening, when we arrived
at Winchester, we were continuously
moving forward. We passed through
only two towns—Middleton n and New
Town—on the way. Twelve of our
men wore dotaiied for guard duty, and
on that account rode, and six others
were too much indisposed to under
take to march, and six or eight more
gave out ou the way. Only about 40
marched into Winchester. Of these
sorno seoined ready to dance a jig, but
most of them looked quite sober und
stepped very carefully. There tire some
sore feet this morning, but aside from

Our Company desiring and expecting

of the requirements, and before "break

There is not a man in the company
who objects to tho terms iqion which
we were yesterday mustered into ser

We learn that it has been reported

themselves with another organization
at home, which report we beg to assure
you is entirely without foundation. To

along with its usual regularity, leaving

if the Federalists would withdraw, I
would pledge myself to disband the mi
