TERHIRLE KIOT MErfl'MIS.,
War of Races. Thirty Negroes and
Six Whites Killed.
Wo make the following synopsis from
the telegraphio ilis[ ntches to the Nash
ville and Chattanooga .papers :
'On the 30th of April some seven hun
'dred oqlofed Irodps'wero paid oft' and
mustered out of service, in Memphis.—
They indulged in whisky ficely, arid
wero disposed to be turbulent and riot
ous,. The riot commenced between four
rin<) five o’clock I*. M-, Tuesday, the 1st
dust-. .Ttyp origins are given; One Is
tVat a'lvliito man and a negro, each
driving wagons, looked wheels, and af
ter a short quarrel commenced beating
each other with' their whips. Negroes
rushed to ,the support of thflir brother
aud white lr.eii to the rescue Of his an
tagonist; (be'-iiglit soon becoming gen
eral. The other ‘vrt'sion of tiio affair is,
that the immedialo cause of tlio mob
was the effort of the city police to quell
a disturbance betwden the hogroes. It
is not, improbable.that both of these af
fairs happened At thosamo time.
At thu first approach of the police
they.wero'fired uiion by negroes, one
boing-mrirlally, and twd others sovoroly
wiitiiided. The policalnncT other oiti-
r.oqa, who liad gone to their support,
tired upon the“iicgioes, killing six and
wounding many more. Tho alarm and
excitement ran like wild fire through
tho city, both races flying to the scene
of action. The whites soon outnum
bered tbo negroes, and being bolter sup
plied with arms, the latter reluctantly
dispersed.
This was Only douc, however, as tho
sequel proved, to preparo for a more de
torminod attack on the following day.
Before day on tho morning of tho 2d,
a-large body of negroes wont to fort
Tinkering and demanded arms and am'
uhition. These wore denied thorn, aud
they left, but roturned again by sun
e-iso, threatening to tnko by force these
articles. The commandant orduredout
ids 'garrison, and threatened to give
them a dose of grape shut unless . they
should leavo immediately. Tlio ne
groes roturnod to the city—and seemed
to have spont mo3t of that flay in ‘‘flora
ing their, wrath to koop it wares”, and
providing arms and amunilion. Sever
al sliots, howovor, were exchanged,
koopUg up a desulloty fight, dliting
the day. between whites and*ncgroos.—
As night come oh both races seem to
liavebecon.o, in a measure, free from
reslra'inl. South ' Memphis was tlio
principal soetie of action". During tho
day the whites had not been idle. A
gun store was broken open fey them,
and all tlio guns and pistols taken.
The exoitement was greatly intensi
fied by tbo following statement that ap
ponied in one of the evening papers:
“A gentleman who resides in the conn
try, some twenty-five miles from this
city, discovered, on ' ni{ht before las^
that sevoial of his uegro employees had
deserted him. Tracing them to this
city, he'found one of them in a dying
condition from a wound received in
the light last night. Tlio dying negro
said that the trouble last night was pre
meditated; arid that he and his com
panions camodoWn to assist' in It, and
that it came on prematurely. To-uighl,
he said, the plan was to attack tho city,
ami to rob all the jewelry and otlior
stores.”
After about nino o'clock at night, the
Mayor and Slievifl'-—supported by all
the regular police, as well as many vol
unteers, arid tho garrison of about one
hundred and fifty regular sptdiors, vyorp
uaafeloto-ooulrol, tho mob, and the
workof destruction commenced. Be
fore day light next morning all'tlio no-
gro churches and School houses, togeth
er with some thirty or forty of their
dwellings, had boon oitlur. toru down
or burned. As to the number killed
that night accounts do not , .agree, some
say thirteen or fifteen negroos, and four,
to six whites; while others put it at a
lower figure.
Dispatches for reinforcements bad
been sent to Gen. Fisk, Gen. Thomas
and Gov. Brownlow. The negro troops
that had just been mustered put wore
driven into Fort Pickering, and most
of the othernegroes compelled to lenvo
the limits of the oity. Gen. Stonomun,
the (commandant of the Post, had put
(lie ghrriBon subject to tho orders, of
the Mayor,' and still there was
abatement to the frenzy of tho mob.—
Before nino o’clock on the night of tho
3d, the negroes in Fort Piokoring broko
through the guard and made their es
cape. The mob of whites had gono to
Negroville- just outside of tho city
limits, a negro town nearly a mile
square, with the determination to burn
every cabin there, und at nino o’clook
the brilliant lights in that direction in
dicated that the work of destruction
bad commenced. Consternation and
intense excitement prevailed and a ter
rible night was expected.
It is highly gratifying to know that
there was no conflict between the mu.
nicipgland military authorities, and
that tho latter supported tbo former.—
Tbo lawlessness of the mob was depro-
eaten by all conservative citizens, and
severely denounced by tlio oity pa
pers. . _ 4 ■
The editor of ibe Commercial thinks
the number of negroes killed is report
ed too high. He, on Thursday even
ing, saui thirteen dead ones, aud knew of
one more. “.Most of the] reporters set
down tlio number of negroes killed, at
from 22 to 30, and 3 tojfl Jwhites.
Ori the evening of the 3d Gon. Slono
man issuod tlio following order :
Memphis, Tbnh., May 3, 18G6.

out authority of these headquarters to
