A IIlttlCULOUS FAILURE.
So far evory effort to make "treason
6di0us” has ridiouloisiy 'failed, for the
simple reason that the late war wash
civil war, and not a treasonable strug
gle on the part of the Sdnthern people.
Civil war iswhkt the toarld regarded it,
'frhat it really was,' and is all tho radicals
either hfere dr can niako of it. This
they know as well as'ive and the rest of
the world do, and they may gnash their
teieth in vain now and forever, but they
will never provb that a ooh'test was trea
son whlon nearly overthrew thein;
whioh required theta, first and last, to
call out hevoral millions of men; tVhieh
extorted ftam the world the acknowl
edgement of our belligete’nt rights, and
whioh ooVered out nam'e with glory
though overwhelmed with 'defeat.
If treasifi has been oota'mitted Vrhy
ft not Jefferson Divjs tried, in order
that the iss'de may he determined post
civil? Ah, that is what they shrink
from. They well know Vvhat condem-
f it ion awaits theta in that trial, and
hat vindication will be oure in that
Verdict. They dddge the ordeal, for
they know that they would really be as
much fried, and much nearer condemn
cd by the trial than Jefferson Davis and
the South.
> When Benedict Arnold went to Eu
rope, nt the otose of the revolution, he
found himselt hissed, scorned and spit
upon by the sentiment of both Epglish
and continental society wherever ho
presented himself. He died a misera
ble recluse, who dared not show his
lace in public for fear of being insulted.
That is the way the world treats trait
ors, But we do not find that.Confeder
ates are received in this manner either
at home or abroad. Foreign nations
extend to them every honor and dis
tinction; even exalting theta t6 high
places. Were Mr. Davis or General
Lee in Europe today, pdmirktion
would follow and huzzas would greet
them wherever they appeared. No
single thought of "treason’' would en
ter a mind of the millions Who would
shout their fame, 'fbo greatness of
their deeds, the purity of their Virtues,
and, in the cose of Mr. Davis, the mag
nitude of his sufferings and his martyr
dom at Fortress Monroe, would fill the
minds of all men and captivate their
hearts.
The “odium of treason,” as far as
this term is sought to be made appli
cable to tho Southern people, is at once
so preposterous and absuid that it is
high time the idle folly of such lan
guage hadjoeased; it stultifies the peo
ple who still continue to employ it. It
is considered mean and dishonorable
among gentlemen to make a charge
which cunnot be established. If our
war was not a civil war, or attempted
revolution, let those who dispute our
proposition prove the "treason." We all
know how gladly they would do so, if
plOisible. But they cannot, and. there
fore, they refrain from trying Mr. Da-
vis, beoause they fear what is behind
'that vordiet, and well they may.
I Richmond Times.
Arfest ot Vagrants.
A descent was made yesterday morn
ing by the police upon the vagrunt
freed population, and forty or fifty
males and f-males taken into custody.
They will bo indicted at the present
sitting of the County Court, and sen
tenced to work upon the public roads.
The groftp. os seen huddled together at
the City Hall, wiis a most interesting
study, arid would have furnished a rare
painting for the Hon. Thud Stevens’
drawing room. The contented chain.
heV-rtaid of former days is a chamber,
maid WO taore, but is the peeress of her
mistress, according to the construction
she*pla'cefe upon recent ohanges. It is
not exactly in keeping with her
ideak 'of freedom to dust the parlor
have A parlor ~ Aer °Wn-and » door
bell—and * "ureery too, perhaps, but
j OP >t exactly comprehend how her
uopes are to bo realized. She is inar-
velously fond of dress, among other
little peculiarities, and nothing pleases
her more than to make a display on
the publio promenades. She abandons
a comfortable home, disregards the ad
vice of her late mistress, adopts a life
of idleness end vice, and very sd'ou dis
covers that there ft no sympathy for
her in any quarter. The result is that
the vagrant law mdnt be enforced; and
it flii'ds in that 'class of silly creatures
mof'e subjects thah can well be disposed
of. The number of such unfortunates
taken into custody yesterdfiy was small,
bat the city is filled with them, as every
street corher plainly exhibits; ahd the
labor of our police force ih apprehend
ing and properly disposing of theta has
hardly commenced.
Of the males arrested there was every
variety, and nearly every city and
town in the State had its representa-
tatiVo. From the fancy darkey of gin-
rerbTead hue, who once, performed the
aborous task of office boy for an indul
gent master, to the brawny Africnn of
the cornfield, there were specimens to
be found in the group; and not one had
been arrested upon whom rested the
least suspicion of honesty or disposition
to earn a livelihood. They wore all
known to have been vagrants of long
standing, and their faces are as famil
iar on the street corners as are the
lampposts.
We hope these arrests will be
continued until that thriftless part of
oar population shall be properly dis
posed of. When the fact is oneb estab
lished that they will not bo permitted to
lounge upon our streets, they will de
part for the rural regions, or obtain em
ployment here, where labor is greatly
needed at all times.—At. Intel.

great. Austria has a territorial area of
about two hundred and fifty thousand
