'Hatflmbnlal Slavery. Tlv> Estimate if a California Wife—Ten year* or Falthftl Work. The following card appears in the San Jose (Cal.) Patmt: NOTICE. "All persons are hereby warned not t8 trust Mary E. Aborns, (my wife,) as she has left my bed and board without just cause or provocation, and I will not pay any bill contracted by her from and after this date. John Aborns. ‘•San Jose, Feb. 6.1875.” Mrs. Aborns now comes to the front and makes the following statement in reply to the above “warning” from her non-crediting liege lord: The above notice appears now daily in the San Jose Daily Patroit. Why am I thus published to the world? And what human being on earth has the right to do it ? Let U3 look at the facts. I have been the wife of John Aborns for about ten years, and lived with him the whole of that time—the B rimeofmy liie. Tliatmakes 3,650 days. pring {hat time I have cooked about ten-thousand meals of viotuals, set the table as many times, and cleared it off and washed the dishes. During the ten years I have spent between ten and fifteen thousand hours a over hot a cook stove, both'in summer and winter. I have cleaned up and swept the house for him over ten thousand times. During that ten years I have borne to him six .children, five of them now living, the youngest two and a-half years old. Besides the pains and acci dents incident to child-birth (which every mother knows) what steps, cares and troubles (to say nothing of the sickness and anxious thoughts for my children) it has cost me to bring them up,.it is impossible for me to say; every mother knows it better than she can possibly tell it. In addition to that I nave made all their clothing (besides my own), and during that time I have also made clothing and done sewing for others for money, which ,went into the “community” funds; that is, as I understand it, all the property made by the husband and wife is “community property,” but in reality belongs to the hUSDand, and it is called in law “ com munity property,” to take off the sharp edge of injustice. More than that, during these ten yegrs 1 have milked, on an average, three cows tw&j£. a day, which will muke about seven thousand milkings, besides taking care of the milk and making bitter from it. I have, during the whole of that time, attended to the poultry, and often have assisted Mr. Aborns in loading hay, sewing sacks, and- even cleaning out his stable. Now, I have drawn the picture very mildly. I have mode allowances for my sick nesses, when I have had help, something after the way that a farmer would hire a horse, if nis own was sick and una ble to work. I had nothing when I went there and nothing at the end of those ten years of servitude. I had lived, it is true, and was very moder ately furnished with clothing. This is for my labpr. What man is there in the world that would do the work 1 have done for the same compensation? I make this statement, notout of any feeling of revenge to Air. Aborns, for he has done only what hundreds ol others would have done. In many re spects he is a good man ; industrious, npd| like hundreds—yea thousands—of others, honest with everybody except his own family. I choose to live with him no longer; my reasons are my own. And again, what right has he to impair my credit by publishing me ? In the name of all that is iust I solemnly pro test against it. Mary E. Aborns.
