Yellow fever at Ponaacola.
Rev. Willie Ueese, who has lived at
Pensacola for the past eighteen months,
returned to this county last Tuesday.
He reports that when he left there were
four cases of yellow fever in Pensacola
and forty more quarantined in tho Bay.
There was quite a panic in the town.
Liet. Col. Charlca I. Graves
Sailed on the steamer Egypt, for Liver
pool last Saturday. The Egypt is the
largest Bteamcr but one that sails out of
New York. His address is “Lieut.
Col. Charles I. Graves, Egyptian Army,
North Gorman Union, via Brindisi.”
The postage 17 cents, lias to be pre
paid. Col. Graves will correspond reg
ularly for The Courier, while in
Egypt, and interesting letters from him
may be expected soon after his arrival
to the dominions of the Khedive.
Death of John F. Morton.
The above named well known and
worthy citizen of Chattooga county
died at his residence on Thursday the
lstinst. His age was 51 years and
three days. He had been a citizen of
Chattooga county some twenty-eight
years, and few citizens have filled as
large a place in the affection and high
regard of a wide cirelo of acquantauce
as did Mr. Morton. His disease was
consumption. He bore his afflictions
with christain fortitude, and in serene,
loving confidence left this world of sin
and sorrow.
Departure of Prof. Townes and Pamllly.
President Townes and family leave
this evening for their former home in
South Carolina. They take with them
the kindest and best wishes of their nu
merous fiiendB in this community.
We regret to lose them. Mr. Townes
felt that, in the death of his wife, it was
not expedient for him to remain as the
President of the Cherokee Baptist Fe
male College longer, and therefore ten
dered his resignation in consequence,
which was reluctantly accepted, because
he had been eminently successful in
tho building up the new institution,
and because, too his pupils were great
ly atiached to him. The daughters,
we are informed, will return to the Col
iege to remain until their graduation.

the County board and his honor, Judgo
Underwood, are economising tho funds
of tho county to the best advantage.
The following is a synoptical statement
of the expenditures of the county from
.Tan. 1st, to the 30th of June, of the
present year, and for which tho clerk
has drawn his warrants. Tito reports,
made semi-annually, in monthly state
ments, is something new, business-like
anil practical, and will keep tho tax
payers advised as to the disposition
made of tho county funds. Judge
Perry is entitled to tho credit of in-
nugurdting and practically carrying
out the statements.

Tho report shows that there are only
forty-nine bonds (8500 each, bearing
8 per cent and payable semi-annually,
January and July of each year) are
now out and falls due as follows j Jan.
1870,10bonds; Jan, J877, 6 bonds;
Jan. 1878, 10 bonds; Jan. 1879, 5
bonds; Jan. 1880, 2 bonds; Jan.
1881, 3 bonus; Jan. 1882,2 bonds; Jan,
1883, 2 bonds; Jan 1881, 10 bonds.
The annual report of last year shows
that tho total expenses of the county
amounted to 827,645,52. The first Rix
months of the present year only foot
up 811,934,30,. which includes the
small-pox expenditures in building the
pest house and the caro of pationts,
amounting to about 81,000. This is
certainly a most creditable showing for
our county board and is the best evidence
of economy in the expenditures of the
county funds.
The jury tickets last year amounted
to 84,634; the first six months of the
present year to only 8948, a heavy re
duction from tho year.
The clerk informs 113 that ell tho poor
fund is not chargeable to the poor house.
The report shows that it costs a great
deal more per capita to feed the prison
ers in jail than it does tho inmates of
the almshouse. In the first instance it
costs tho county sixty cents per day,
and in the latter only about twelve
cents per day, with full army rations.
How is difference in the cost of feeding
of prisoners and paupers?

More Trouble In rhBltoogn.
Wo regret to learn (bat there has been
more serious trouble in Chattooga county.
Wo have to rely upon conflicting reports
for the facts, but the following seems to
be tolerably well authenticated :
Last Sunday after church at Walnut
Grove, while John Millicani and Frank
Weaver wore going homo in company
with others, they saw ahead of them tho
threo Johnson brothers armed. They
avoided them by leaving the road, but after
getting arms returned and found the
Johnsons where they first saw them. A
quarrel ensued and finally Abda John
son was shot, inflicting n slight wound.
Afterwards all parties throw down their
arms and they had a friendly conference.
It was agreed that the Johnson boys
should all submit to an arrest the next
day and give bonds to keep the peace.
The next day a bailiff, with some assist
ance, went to arrest them and they fled;
but Gus Johnson was overtaken and ar
rested. The other two brothers escaped
to the woods and these were shot by some
parties, unknown to our informant, Abda
in the head and thigh, and Jeff in the
arm—all slight wounds. After Gus
Johnson was arrested his mother gave a
satisfactory bond. The other two broth
ers passed through Rome Tuesday morn
ing.
Wo know that the great majority of
tiie people of Chattooga county are as
peaceful and law-abiding as any citizens
in tho State, and as deeply deplore those
troubles as is possible for them to do so,
and we have full confidence that they
will take the necessary steps to put a stop
to these personal encounters.
