The operation of transfusion was sue
cessfully performed in our oily last eve
ning by iwo of our prominent physicians,
thus adding another wonderful triumph
of surgical art. The operation was per- |
formed on a lady resident of this place
who, for years has been suffering with a
disease which had completely undermin
ed her health, sapped the fountains of
her life blood, and destroyed the power
of digestion. The flesh was completely
destroyed on some portions of her limbs,
and the hones exposed to view. Physic
failing to meet the wants of her devital
ized body, something had to be done.
How greatly we are indebted to the art
divine widen comes to the rescue in such
mi emergency. A healthy iamb is pro
cured and from tho pulsating channels
of its life current, the red tide of life
blood is turned into the veins of the in
valid, and made to flow for a minute and
a half iu uninterrupted stream. The op
eration has proven a complete success so fur,
and furnishing tho patient who had al
most bade farewell to cartldy cares with
an extraordinary chance of recovery.
The operation was performed without
the aid of chloroform, by two of our
prominent resident physicians, Drs. S. \Y
Vaughan and Joshua King. We win
success to the gentlemen in the brigli
fields which await them.—Hot Spring*

Sad Experience.
The New York World sums up the
uxperince of the California Grangers
thus:
They attempted to sldp their own
wheat as well as grow it, and the crop
of sea was as barren as the crop of tho
land was fertile. They are said to have
chartered 100 vessels at 4 pounds 7s.
Gd., whereupon freight ran down to 3
pounds for outside charter, and the
Grangers were left to exclaim upon tho
wonders and mysteries of over-sea
transportation. It is said that what
with demurrage, etc., the loss is over
half a million dollars. If the Califor
nia Grangers have learned, however, at
tills price, that the shoemaker ventures
beyond his last a risk, tho experience
will not be dear bought. We suppose
the Grangers will feel inclined to lay
the blame upon their agents, to swin
dling and the like but, in the final an
alysis and upon cooler reflection, they
will realize that they have swindled
themselves by adding to the hazards of
agricultural tho risks of commercial
pursuits, rejecting the advantage of di
vision of labor, and incurring novel
risks without practised hands.
We hope our Grangers will have
better luck than their California breth
ren.
The Death of Dead-Headism.—Chi
cago, Dec. 2.—A meeting of Western
railroads was held hero to-day, with the
object of ratifying the arrangement en
tered into two years ago for the aboli
tion of the free pass system, and to se
cure the co-operation of the roads lead
ing West and Soulh from St. Louis,
which have heretofore held aloof. lies
olutions abolishing all free passes, ex
cept to ernp’oyes, after January 1,1875,
were adopted and an agreement signed
to that effect.
Popular Wrath Against Thieving
Officials.—The tax-payers of New
Orleans city and county have taken ac
tion in reference to tho robberies by
county officials and the destruction of
official books and records of the county,
and adjourned to the court house where
they assembled en masse and demanded
the resignation of the dishonest office
holders. The sherifl' and a magistrate
offered their rcsignatisns, but the others
could not bo found.
The St. Louis Chamber of Commerce
having negotiated a loan of 8480,000,
from the Connctiout Mutual life, will
proceed to finish its new building, tho
finest in the land.
Chicago having promised to take
proper precautions against conflagra
tions, all the Hartford companies, ex
cept the Phoenix, are again taking
risks.
It is reported that Judgo Swaze will
retire from the Supreme bench.

“ The Lone Star S&ato is ouo of tho garden
spots of tho Continent. No l.v.d ou tho earth .g
more productive, and possessors of real estate
property in Texas may look with certainty tor
its rapid advancement in value. A plan is on
foot which will give many a man a good farm
for an insignificant suui. Tho managers, Messrs
Wagley A Lockart, of Houston, aru men of hi'h
respectability and great business capacity, a-id
therefore reliability is assured.”—St. Louis Re
publican.
The Texas “ Odd Fellow” also endorses tno
above, and states •
“From our Itug und favorable knowledge of
he firm we take pleasure u commending them
to tho public as hone.; . honorable gentlemon.”
And tho Galveston News” adds:
“Tho distribution will compriso over 00,000
acres of land, located in thirty-oight oouuti is,
and it is promised by gentlemon whuao charac
ters are equal to thoso of any in tho land that
thoy will Uu fairly, honestly aud equitably d a-
tributed.”
And tho “ Age” of Houston states:
‘ A Fine Immigration Scheme.— W. C. Wagley
and Robert Lockart are both prominent and
reliable citizens of Houston. The scheme'em
braces tho distribution of $400,000 worth cf
Texas lands and Houston city property. They
put in the brick building on Main street, in this
city, and in which is the office of this paper,
valued at $18,000, and a splendid dwelling house
on Rusk street (the “ Fifth Avenue” of Houston)
and sovoral hundred unimprovod building lets
in this growing young city. For the small sum
of three dollars, one takjs tho chance of becom
ing tho lawful ownor of Texas property worth
from threo hundred to $IS, COO. So far as regards
tho standing of the managers, that is a matter
beyond the possibility of cavil,”
Tho “Telegraph” of Houston thus speaks ef
the distribution :
“The drawing will come off on tho 21st of
December. Wo need only give our readers tuo
assurance that the managers are men ol standing
and reliability.”
Tho “ Herald” of Dallas, another growing city
of Texas, coumivnds its advantages to tho public
thus :
“ We can vouch for tho responsibility of the
firm, ami that all they promise they will per
form. Tho echomo is an excellent one, in oir
opinion, as &, means of adding up our State and
iaviting immigration.”
The " Herald,” Crockett, Texas:
“ Tho plan theso gentlemen have adopted to
sell tho large amount ol lands for which thoy
uro agents is a most commendable one. Moseib
Wagley & Lockart aro old real estate agents of
Houston, and are men who have a reputation for
honesty and integrity.”
The Kansas City “ Chronicle” rc-wnrks
“ Wagloy Sc Lockart, of Houston, Texas, oflor
chances to get a good farm in Texas for $3. It
is a square thing.”
Tho “ Press,” Paris, Texas, reworks :
“The well known firm of Wagley Sc Lockart,
tho largest real estate firm in tho State, are the
originators of this scheme by which thoui&nJj
of acres will bo brought into use and alar;*
population added.”
The Willis “ Observer” states :
“ Those gen "omen aro too well known to need
any further en».orsem' nt of ours.”
The Ellia county “ News,” Texas, comments l v
follows:
“These gentlemen are trustworthy and relia
ble; there is a chance for you to obtain a good
home by investing tho small sum of three del
lars. The distribution will positively take plao-i
at Houston, December 21.”
The “ Mercury,” Galveston, says :
u Messrs. Wagley Sc Lockart aro well and
favorably known throughout tbc Stato. Tim
title of every piece of property is guaranteed
Thero is no better investment.”
The New Orleans “Picayune” commends the
enterprise to its patrons in the following:
“All who havo visited the Lone Star State
within tho last two or three years, pronounce itn
faturo as bright and hopeful as that of any Sta’.o
in tho Union. Railroads are being rapidly con
structed, cities built, farms improved, and pros
perity is seen everywhere. To those who with
to settle in this gnat Southern State, or who
wish to obtain real estuto there inorely as a
speculation, a rare opportunity ia offered by the
Grand Land Distribution aud Gift Concert, to be
held at Houston, Texjs, on the 21st December,
1374,undor tho management of Messrs. Wagley
Sc Lockart. The e gcutlo en have been in the
real ostato business fbr £ vcral years, and uro
reliable, honest and c.rrect gentlemen, who will
certainly carry out whatever they promise Their
close attention to business, promptness and energy
havo gained them a wide popularity, and to
have no doubt this enterprise, in their hands,
will bo most satisfactorily conducted t-’ *• suc
cessful close.”
Tho “ Democratic Statesman” says this of
idea: *
“Everybody wants a cheap homo, and in a
country like Texas, tho sourco of wealth often
lies in tho possession of a good piece of land.
Messrs. Wagloy and Lockart, real estate agent of
Houston, havo put on loot a plan which is Jei-
tined, for a more trifle, to supply a great many
persons with most dcsirablo homes. * * * *
Messrs. Wagloy Sc Lockart aro gentlemon of tbo
