Saturday Morning,—-January 15,1876
Dr. J. W. Renfroe has been elected
Treasurer by the Legislature.
When h man gives our sprightly
friend Cohen of tho Commercial au
item he very properly holds him to tin
scratch, os instance the following.
•‘We publish the marriage of Mr
U. F. McLnuren on bis own authority.
If ho is no married he has lied a>'0
not the editor this time.”
A Washington telegram announcer
the death of Mr. John Wilson, former
ly commissioner of the general land
office and third auditor of the treas
ury; also the death of Mrs. Judge
Bartley, sister of Gen. Sherman.
BroWirlow thinks that Blaine has made
n fool of himself by hi* Jeff Davis
speech. There can bs no doubt about
Blaine’s being a fool, but ho didn’t nrak<
himself one. His mamma and daddy
put up that little job for him, when he
was born, and they did it well too.
How sweet and how pleasant were
tho words of Nathaniel Banks of Mass
achusetts in Congress on the Blainr.
amnesty amendment. It was like
precious ointment upon burning sore,
and should entitle him to the thanks ol
every patriot in the land, from Maine
to California. How like an angel ol
peace he appears, in contrast witli the
malignant Bluine who to advance his
personal aims would reopen afresh
the horrible wounds of tho war.
A number of our exchanges are
cyring for retrenchment and reform
by the legislature. We believe as stren
uously as any one in a rigid economy
by the Government blit think tiiat the
most of those who are itow criyng for
retrenchment are morely doing so to
tickle a popular fancy. There is no
solid sonse in that cry. Tho State taxes
are not at all burdensome and if our
county organizations will manage theii
affairs ns well us the Statu there would
be no hardships apprehended on the
score of taxes.
NVaitOH OP MR. HIL1..
We present this morning a synopsis of
the masterly speech of Hon. B. H. Hill,
on tho subject of Confederate treatment
of Federal prisoners during tho war.
Tbe speech was in reply to Mr. Blaino’s
fierce onslaught upon Mr. Davis, and if
there is anything unpalattable to the
Northern taste in Mr. Hills facts ami fig
ures, they must blamo Mr. Blaine for call
ing them out. His utterances were all
true and and fortified by the records ot
the war. We regret to see these old
wouuds ripped open, but -at the same
time neither Mr. Davis nor the Southern
people have any cause to dread tho
exposure. They were neither responsi
ble for the war or for its concomitant
horrors, and least of all are they to be
neld accountable for the sufferings of the
prisoners. The Confederate authorities
made every effort in their power to se
cure an exchange of prisoners but with
out avail.
The latest New York on ilit is to the.
effect that Edward S. Stokes, the slayer
of James Fisk, is confident of an imme
diate release from prison. He claims
that his term of imprisonment, calcula
ting the entire time he spent in jail
previous to and during his three trials,
aid the reduct ion. for good behavior,
of his term, will end on the6th of Jan
uary.
The Missouri State Lottery long
Maintained itself as a legalized busi
ness because it hail a contract with the
•state in which it agreed to devote a
percentage of its receipts to certain
public purposes. This theory has been
ivcrthrown by a trial, and the police
if St. Louis have been c-rdered to stop
be sale of tickets in that city. Inei

Thomas, who committed suicide after
causing the explosion on board the

effect an insurance on the box, aud on
arriving in New York he represented it
to contain catridges, aud at his request it
was stored iu the warehouse of the White

opened, but nothing explosive was con

in the box, which securely made, and

The London World of the 15th ulti
mo says that the scheme for a co-oper
ative Atlantic cnble hug been arranged
and that a preliminary contract has
been entered into with ii first-class firm
of cable contractors to make and lay
from the Land’s End to New York for
less tlian;£500,000, and that Sir Wil
liam Thomson and other eminent en
gineers certify that this cable would be
■is good, if not superior, to any one ex
isting. “It mav, therefore,” adds the
IForM, "be taken as a positive fact that
a cable between England and New
York can be made and laid for
■his sum. With this price ns a basis,
'.he entire nssets of the Anglo-Ameri
can Company might be dulieftted for
about £1,500,000, Ocean telegraphy
is, in its infancy. Within two or three
years the existing cables will be re
placed by better ones at less than half
their cost."
The power of the French, ns a nation
to find some good use for everything
was never more strikingly illustrated
than in the ease of a woman who has
established near Paris an institution for
the propagation of the ant species. She
has inured herself to the stings of
her pot insects, and handles them with
perfect confidence. From e’ery brood
born in her preserves she selects the
best “lawyers” to rear and their eggs
are sold at a fair price to bird fanciers
as food for pheasants. The police see
to it that she keeps her unt-liouse a
good distance out of thecity, and a num
ber of agents are continually scouring
the forests in tho ruTal districts of
Franco and capturing large nests of
ants to send her. Her establishment
is, therefore, not only no nuisance to
her neighbors, but a positive blessing
to thousands of farming people.

In answer to tho petition of citizens
for a post route for the Oostanaula from
this place to Carter’s Landing recently
forwarded by Judgo Perry, he has re
ceived the following encouraging as
surance:
House of Representatives, )
Washington, D. C., Jan. 10,1875. j
Mr. Thos. J. Perry:
Dear Sin—I have seen the Assistant
post Master General and also sent him
the petition for a mail route on river
from Rome to Carters. Enclosed I send
you his auswer, you see that all waters
are now Mail routes by law and the
Department is ready to consider offers
for weekly trips on said river after or
on first of July next. Let the steam
boat |men put in their bids and have
them as cheap as possible as the get
ting the mail will dopend upon the ex
pense.
YotirB Truly,
W. H. Fki.ton.
Post Office Department, )
Office of S. A. P. M. General, r
Washington, D. C. Jan. 6,1876 j
Sin—Your letter of the 80 ultimo nnd
the petition enclosed by you, have been
received. You are informed that as
*U the waters of the United Stale? are
post routes by law, during the time tbe
mails may be carried on them, it will
not be necessary to have the river from
Rome to Carter’s Lauding Ga, made
a post route by act of Congress.
The Department docs not deem it
admirable to put mail service on this
route at preseat, but will consider an
offer for weekly trips after 1st July
next when the new Georgia service
will go into operation.
I have the honor to be Very Re
spectfully Yours,
Jaa. N. Tyner,
Second Assistant Postmaster Master
General.
If the reception at the While House
on New Year's day may be tukon as a
sign of Grant’s popularity, the Third-
term project is in a very bad way. It
was tho slimest, coldest, and most neg
lected ofiair of the kind that has been
witnessed since the close of the civil
war. The attendance at the official
eeremonicB, which include the diplo
matic body, Cabinet, assistant secreta
ries, officers of the army and navy, sena
tors, representatives, and various socie
ties, was so exceptionally small by
comparison with former occasions as to
excite universal comment. When tho
hour for the public came, there was no
throng at nil, and little more than a
beggarly account of office-holders, who
could not stay away with safety. The
people shone by their absence, and for
once Grant was made to feel how much
lie had fallen in public estimation, aud
how powerless he was to command the
ordinary tokens of respect aud regard.
Even the faithful third-termers looked
solemn.
The New York Tribune thus attempts
•to forecast the Prcsidental election :
“Democrats cannot elect the next
President without New York. Re-
pubiicanscan. Those two facts supply
the key of the next election. The Dem
ocrats must nominate a candidate and
frame a platform, and put their party
into a position tiiat can secure New
York.Otherwise they are whipped be
fore the fight begins. But the Repub
licans can still make a desperate strug
gle, with a possibility of success, even
though the probabilities in this State
ihould be against them. * *
The Democrats can count witli almost
absolute certainty upon the votes of
fifteen former slave States, and the Re
publican, if they nominate a candidate
who unites the party, can count with
equal certainty upon the vote ofSouth
Carolina aud nil the former non-slave-
holding States, except New York,
Connecticut, New Jersey, Indiana, Cal
ifornia and Oregon. The Democrats
then need 54 more electoral votes out
of the 74 considered debatable. The
Republicans, however, need only 21,
and can lose New York, New Jersey
and Connecticut, or New York, Indiana
and Oregon, and still elect the Presi
dent. The Democrats cannot possioly
get 54 out of the 74 debatable votes,
without the 35 of New York, and must,
therefore, carry this State or be bea
ten.”

My Bronchial trouble remained and
the Catarrh was tenfold wore.! than bi-
lore. Every effort for relief* seemed
fruitless. I seemed to be losing ground
daily.
I continue in this feeble state raising
blood almost daily until about the
first of March, '73, when 1 became so
bad as to be entirely confined to the
bouse. A friend suggested your reme
dies. Rut I was extremely skeptical
that they would do me good, as I had
lost all heart in remedies, aud began to
look upon medicine and doctors with
disgust. However, I obtained one of
your circulars, and read it carefully,
from which I came to the conclusion
that you understood your business, at
least. 1 finally obtained a quantity of
Dr. Sage’s Catarrh Remedy, your
Golden Medical Discovery and Pellets,
and commenced their vigorous use ac
cording to directions. To my surprise,
I soon ,begnn to improve. The Dis
covery and Pellets, in a short time,
brought out a severe eruption, which
continued for several weeks. I felt
much better, my appetite improved,
and I gained in strength and fleBh.
In three months every vestige of the
Catarrh was gone, the Brmichicis had near
ly disappeared, had no Cough whatever
and I had entirely ceased to ruise blood ;
and contrary to the expectation of some
jf my friends, tbe cure has remained
permanent. I have had no more Hemor
rhages from tho Lungs, and am entirely
free from Catarrh, from which I had suf
fered so much and so long. The debt of
gratitude I owe for the bl saiug I have
received at your bands, knows no bounds.
I am thoroughly sutified, from my experi
ence, thut your medicines will master the
worst forms of that odious disease Ca
tarrh, ns well a Throat aud Lung Dis
eases. I have recommended them to very
many and shall ever speak in their praise.
Gratefully yours,
