j We were shown yesterday Some
j beautiful specimen) of Miciby Tims.
Perry, which htrsays come fiota a
large bod of it in this county. If tl*c
mine was opened and properly worked
it would afford employment for quite a
number of hands, and pay the proprie
tors handsomely. Why can’t this be
done? our stove inon linvo been and aio
yet sending to New York for it, and
pay fabulous prices for it. The best
and the cheapest lamp chimneys now
in use aro made of Mica,
Why then send to New York for it,
when it can be obtained at our doors.
There is no section on eartli that pro
duces so many elements of wealth as
the section of country! adjacent to
Rome. If all the elements of wealth
were properly utilized we would not
havo to send off for so many things.
Wo regret to see so little interest mani
fested on the part of our citizens in
bringing into notice and making it
known to tho world at large the varied
and immense elements of wealth and
prosperity heie.
Will not our Chamber of Commerce
do this; it will be a fruitful field of
labor for it, can’t the Chamber secure a
suitable room some where on Broad
street for a deposit for specimens of all
kinds of minerals, pottery and fire
clay &c., and invite the citizens gener
ally throughout this and the adjoining
counties to bring or send in speci
mens witli name of owner and postof
fice. Strangers coming here would
soon find something to interest them,
and give them a correct idea of the
mineral wealth of our section. Wo
hope the Chamber will take this mat
in hand, if they will, they will enlist
the aid of every good citizen, of course
there are a few who would not do any
thing for fear some body else would be
banafits 1 by it. Tin dull season is
now coming on which will afford all
time to do some in this good work.
Perrj’a Church IteglRter*
Of this valuable work, the Christian
Index says : “ Brother Thos. J. Perry, of
Rome, Ga., has mado a hook which he
calls ‘Perry’s Church Register,’ and lias
sent us a copy for inspection. We have
examined it, and-find it to be a com
plete church record. Anyone can easily
comprehend the plan, and make easy
entry with entire accuracy. It is ar
ranged alphabetically, and has a line
and column for names, dates, etc., so
that in a few minutes a perfect list of
members, with time received and how,
when dismissed and how, can be made.
Tlius, a perfect record is always ready
and at hand of the full and complete
statistics of the church. Churches, es
pecially largo ones, would do well to
procure this register.
(Grangers.
Dr. C. S- Harris, District Deputy
Grand Master of tho State Grange has
called a meeting of the Grangers of
this county to meet in this city on the
third Saturday in May, for the purpose
of forming a county Council, and re
quested each Lodgo to send up their
delegates from each Grange. The
Romo Grange, had previously agreed
to have a Basket I’ic-nic on that day at
the Fair Grounds. There will be a
conflict unless the county meeting
15 29-42 agrees to meet at the Fair Ground, and
devour the contents of the Romo
Grangers baskets, and then hold their
meeting up stairs in the Ilnll, what
say you to that arrangement friend

We have received from the publishers,
J. B. Lippiucott & Co., Philadelphia, a
copy of this new Georgia novel, and
promise ourselves a rare treat in its pe
rusal. We shall review it at length as
soon as time can be found. The opening
chapter are oliarming and we can safely
commend it to our readers. It is the
work of a Georgia Indy, “ El/.cy Hay,”
Mias Fannie Andrews, and every Georgia
lady ought to buy a copy.
It is for sale in this city by A. Omberg.
How lovingly, lingeringly, we look
upon our winter suits ; see the patches,
and thread-bare spots; then sigh, and,
wonder how we will raise money for a
spring and summer suit. The season for
chauge is right upon us, i he holes and
rents don’t give us air enough. Adver
tise you merchants, let us know who has
the best and cheapest.

It is exceedingly important and
earnestly desired that every member

come before the Lodge. 'There will also
be an election of officers for the ensu
ing quarter, and of delegates to tho
county convention.

Mrs. Frances Hamilton Hood, of
Rome, Ga., lias recently given to the
public a novel styled “Maud Mansfield”
which we venture to predict will be
come a popular favorite. Her story
is well told, her characters well con
ceived and her language pure and sim
ple. The excellence of the work con
sists in its elevated moral tone and
its lofty sentiments. We cordially en
dorse the remarks of the Memphis Ap-
peal in regard to this book. The Appeal
says: “It is ahighly interesting work.
The story is good and the characters
well drawn and life like. We welcome
it ns a valuable contribution to South
ern literature by a highly refined and
cultivated ladv.”—-Jackson, Tennessee,

There are fifteen beautiful fountains
at play in tho city, giving to the yards
they ornament a delightful air and ele

for the refinement of our citizens, and
suggests a change in the pseudonym of
