The boxwood used by engravers is
brought from the region of the Black
and Caspian Seas, and is said to grow in
perfection nowhere else. A cubic foot of
it weighs seventy-fivo pounds, and the
prices range from $75 to $250 a ton.
Charles Reade, the English novelist,
has recovered $500 damages from the
Glasgow Herald, for having reprinted
part of his novel, “ Hero and Martyr,”
from the Pall Mall Gazette, which alone,
besides an Americun paper, had tho right
to publish it.

It is not often that lesser art suggests
the higher, but it is said that chiomo-
lithographs were first suggested by cir
culars. It is less that ten years ago
that a French artist, Jules Cheret by
name, who was costumo artist and de
signer at Covent Garden, was struck by
tho colored street advertisements, and
thought that a similar idea might be
carried out to copy paintings. He made
experiments, and with great care man
aged to produce an infinite variety of
Bhades. He returned to Paris, ana M.
Jules Cheret has been the most success
ful of chromo-lithographers.
We find in a French paper and inge
nious re-arrangement of the statistics
of paper-making compiled by Carl
Engel. All the world taken together,
there are 3,960 paper-makers, who pro
duce between them 900,000 tons of pa
per per annum, half of which, 450,000
tons, is used up by the printers. About
750 tons are used a day by the news
papers alone. For government purpo
ses 100,000 tons are used up, 90,TOO
tons are consumed by the schools, 20,-
000 tons by commerce, 90,000 tons by
various trades, and 50,000 tons by cor
respondence. Over 180,000 persons are
directly engaged in the paper-making
trades.
Mr. Rufus Magee, the secretary of the
Indiana Democratic State central com
mittee, in a private letter to a friend in
New York, says: “I can only say
things never looked better for us in
this State. Fraud alono can defeat us.
We are making a gallant fight, and
the state is ‘red hot’ and no mistake.
After the most careful polling of each
district I put down the majority at from
8,000 to 12,000. Some think it will be
20,000, but I can’t figuro It out that way.
The New York World endorses Mr.
Magee as being thoroughly posted in
regard to Indiana politics, and as ono
inclined ro underrate rather than to
overstate the prospect of his party.
