A countryman tells the following re'
garbing a noted chicken thief of Ataer-
icus:
A few days sinco, hearing a commo
tion in his yard among his fowls, he
Bopped out of doors and ran upon
S-titi, a colored individual from the city,
ard accosted him thusly :
“Hello, earn ! stealing my chickens?”
“No, sir, boss; Ise quit dat. Ite
’3perieticed a change of do heart, and
don't steal chickens now, any more ”
“Why, Sara, what is that in your
coat pocket behind that makes it stick
out so ?”
"Oh, dat am my pocket-handkercher,
boss. You see I has got de flewenzy
an’ it takes a big ’un fur mi; dat makes
my pocket so big.”
“Yes, I see; and your handkerchief
has feathers and chicken feet, ton,” said
tile gentleman, ns he proceeded to puli
a young pullet from Sum’s pocket
“This is a queer looking hutidkerchief,
Sam ”
“WellJ my goodness! Boss, I ’clar
to gracious dat chicken must a jumped
into my pocket for de crums I hud
dere.”
“Hush, you rascal! Did the chicken
tie its own feet?”
“Ah, uos8, some o’ detn young folks
play'd dat trick on old Sam, kase he’s
Vperienced ’ligion, an’ am a good nig-
ger now.”
"Sam, you’re an old rascal; there’s
not u soul on the place but mo, as every
one else has gone to church, and l’ye
enug'-t you stealing.”
“Boss, I'll work for you three weeks
if you’ll let nio off now, when you need
me.”
The gentleman accepted the proposi
lion, und Sum returned to nwn to enjoy
the ’sperience of his change of heart.
Commenting on the tardy justice
dono Mr. Finley in giving him his seat
in Congress, the Jacksonville, Florida
Uuioo says:
“A Republican House sea'ed Nib
lack, Democrat, the last days of the
Congress in 1872, keepiug him out and
Wulls in. N ov u Democratic House
gives Finley bis seat at the very end jf
the term, keepiug Bisbee in all the time
till now. If this was dune through pol
icy, it is bad policy. Everybody in
Florida knew that Gen. Finley was fair
ly elected; he received tbe majority ol
legal votes, and his seat was contested
on frivolous, pettifogging, technical
grounds. Bisbee, of course, has receiv
cd his pay and perquisites as a sitting
member. Gen. Finley, at last, being
awarded the seat, will receive the pay
due him. We regret that Gen. Finlev
has not been seated earlier. He would
have made his mark as an influential
member, and "been of benefit to his
State. All congratulate him on obtain
ing his rights.”
