The road lies straight through inoibet * arm*

lie goes by the drowsy • land of nod" to the lard
of f *lullaby," •
When all wee lambs aro safe in the f«»ld, under
the evening sky.
A soft little night-gown clean and white; a face
washed sweet and fair;
A mother brushing the tangles out of the silken
golden hair:
Two little tired, satiny feet, from the shoo and
the stocking free, . ..
Two little palms together clasped, at the moth
er’s patient knee;
Some baby words that aro drowsily lisped to the
tender Shepherd’s ear:
And a kiss that only the mother can place on
the brow of her baby dear;
A little round head which nestles at last dose to
the mothor’a broast,!
And then the lullaby, soft and low, singing the
song of rest;
And closer and closer the blue veined lids are
hiding the baby’s eyes,
As over the road to Slumber-land the dear little

Kor this is tho way, through mother’s arms, all
little babies go, ...
To the beautiful City of Slumber-land, when
the sun is sinking low.
Americus (Ga.) Republican : A gen
tleman of the new Twenty-sixth dis
trict, of this county, informs us that on
last Saturday, as he was riding through
the country, he witnessed the most
novel sight of his life. It was nothing
more nor less than a white lady plow
ing, her husband acting as the horse,
mule, or steer, as the case may be. He
was regulary harnessed and dragging
the plow as complacently as an ox.
The gentleman spoke to the woman
about her team, and she replied that
“this was the only way she could get
any work out of Elam, and she would
make him do what she could.” The
plowed ground was well broken up, and
showed that the woman was expert in
the use of the plow, and that man can
be a horse when he will.

[’ark,in Cleveland, Ohio, with the Brush
eleciric light commenced Thursday eve
ning nt eight o’clock, being the first reg- 8teamboats of
ular public lighting with electricity in
any city of the United States. There
were ten thousand people in the Park at
the time appointed for lighting. The
effect was brilliant in the extreme and
freely demonstrated the success of the
light. This light gives three times more
effective light as was formerly given by
one hundred and ten gas burners, there
being only twelve electric lights used.
The light under tho contract costs the
city one Hundred dollars per year less
than the gas formerly used.

Theatre tickets of old times were iu
some instances of very odd design. In
Rome a visitor purchased at the office a
slender little cane that ho carried in his
hand and delivered to the door-keeper.
Kor the highest priced seats, this stick
was made of ivory ; for the cheapest, of
bronze. Many of theBe bronze canes
have been found in Pompeii, and there
are some in the museum at Naples. They
aro very slender and gracefully made,
having at the top a little dome on which
a pigeon is perched. Even now in Italy
they call the highest seats "piccionerio,
or dove-cotes.
Port Gaines Mirror : “The fact of a
Congressman from Georgia voting
against the abolishment of the Southern
claims commission should never ho for
gotten by his constituents. The bill
creating this commission was passed in
the interest of a few scalawags who re
mained South during war and were too
cowardly to take up arms on either side,
but after its close tried to justify their ac
tions by proving by each other their loy
alty to the Union, when really they had
about as much love or loyalty for the
Union as they exhibited for the Confied-
acy.”
Courier-Journal: The Czar is showing
off the gait of absolute hereditary mon
archy in fine style, and officials are bagged
and imprisoned for not maniiesiing suffi
cient enthusiasm in the raid on Nihilism.
It would appear to the distant observer
that the Czar was engaged in an effort to
pull down his own house over his head.
The worst of the situation is that the army
can not be relied upon. The setting up
of democratic governments on the Balkan
peninsula has given the Muscovite sol
diers a distaste for Czarism, very natu
rally.
