My f©tot are woaried, and my bands are tired—
My heart oppressed;
And with desire have I long desired
Rest -only Rest.
'Tis hard to toil, when toil Is almost vain
In barren ways;
Tis ard to sow, and never garner grain
In harvest days.
The burJen of my days is hard to b sr,
But God knows best;
And I have prayed—but vain has bson iny prayer
For test—sweet Re.-t.
*Tii hard to plant in 8pring, and never reap
The Autmn yi-ld;
"I is hard to till, and when ’tis tilled to weep
O’er fruitless Hold
And so I cry, a weak and human cry,
Sj heart-opprossed:
And so I sigh, a weak and human s : gh.
For Rost—lor Best.
My way has wound across the desert years,
And cares infest
My path ; and through the flowing of I nt tears
I pine for Rost.
*Tws* always so; whon still a child I laid
On mother's breast
My wearied little head, e’en then I prayed
As now, for Host.
And I am restless still; ’twill soon be o’er,
For, down the west
Lifo’s sun is setting, and I see the shore
Whore I shall Rest.

When uu agent rung Mr. Bird's door
bell the other day, says Mux Adler, Mr.
Bird himself opened the door. Mr.
Bird hud the buby upon his arm, and
there were four other children at his
heels.
“Is the lady of the house in ?” asked
the agent.
“Certainly she isn’t!" replied Mr.
Bird. “She is out. She is perennially
and eternally out!’’
"Where can I see her?”
"Why, go down to the Woman Suf
frage Club Itoom, and if she is not there,
go to the Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Acimuls, and if she has left
there, visit the hull of the Association
for Alleviating the miseries of the Stn-
egambiaus, and if she has finished up
there, look for her at the Church Aid
Society or at the ninth ward sonp house,
or at the Home of the One-legged, or at
the Refuge for Infirm Dogs, or at the
Hosoital for the Hsthmatic, or the St.
Polvcarp Orphan Asylum, or at some
of these pluces. If you got on her trail
you’ll see more paupers, and strong-
minded women, and underclothing for
the heathen than you ever saw in the
whole course of your life ’’
“I wanted to sell her u cool-handle
flat iron, juit out. Do you think she
will buy one ?’’
“She will if you can prove that the
naked cannibals in Senegambia are
yearning for cool-handle flatirons. She
would buy diamond breast-pins for vhc
niggers if the) wanted them, I believe.’’
“I intend also to offer her a new kind
of immovable hair pin, which—”
“All right! You just go down to die
Home of the One-legged, and persuade
those cripples to cry for immovable
hair pins, and sho’li order ’em by the
ton.”
"Has she any children ?”
“Well, I’m the one that appears to
have ’em just now, anyhow.”
“Besides I have a gum top for a feed
ing botth; this is the nicest thing you
ever saw.”
“Now,” said Mr. Bird, “I’ll tell you
what to do. You get those paupers to
swear they can’t eat the soup they get
at the soup house with spoons, but they
must have it from a bottle with a rub
ber noz/.le, and Mrs. Bird will keep
you so busy supplying the demand that
you won’t have a chance to sleep. \ T ou
just try it. Buy up the paupers. Bribe
’em!’’
"How’ll I know her if I see her?”
“Why, Bhe’s a large woman with a
bent nose, and she talks all the time.
You’ll hear her talking as soon as get
within a mile of her. She’ll ask you
to subscribe to the Senegambian fund,
and to the Asthmatic Asylum, beforo
you can get your breath. Probably
she’ll read you four or five letters from
reformed cannibals.' But tion’t you
mind ’em. My opinion is she wrote
’em herself.”
"Shall I tell her you told me to call
upon her?”
“It doesn’t make any difference. But
you might mention that since she left
home the baby has had four fits, John
ny has fallen out of the pear tree and
cracked his skull, Mary and Jim both
have something like croup, and Tom
my has been bitten by Jones’ dog. It
won’t excite her; she won’t care a cent;
but I’d like her to have the last news.
Tell her if she enn manage to drop in
here for a few minutes between now
and the Fourth of July, she might may
be wash the baby, and give the other
children a chance to remember how
she looks. But she needn’t come if it
will interfere with the happiness of the
one-legged mendicants, or make her
asthmatics miserable. Mind and men'
tion it to her now, will you ?"
“I will.”
“All right then. I’ll go in and put
some fresli sticking plaster on Johnny's
skull.”
And with the baby singing a vocifer
ous solo, and the other children clinging
to his legs, Mr. Bird retreated and shut
the door. The agent had determined
to propose to a girl that night. He
changed his mind and resolved to re
main a bachelor.
President Hayes in his veto message,
says the Baltimore Sun, does not seem to
be in accord with the electoral commis
sion. That body, to which Mr. Hayes
owes his election, decided that it had too
much respect for States’ rights to see that
votes were honestly counted. It decided
that Congress bad nothing to do with
elections in the States, and was but a
registering and recording body. But M r.
Hayes says “it is tha right of every citi
zen possessing the qualifications prescri
bed by law to cast one unintimidated
ballot and to have his ballot honestly
counted,” and he considers that the elec
tion laws and force bills in the statutes
are meant to secure all this. But if they
had really done so in 187G the veto pow
er of Mr. Hayes would be of very small
account just now.
