Amongst the visitors to the District
Conference now in session in this place
is Rev. W. J. Scott, the agent of this
splendid charity. We are gratified to
learn that the appropriations for the
past year are quite satisfactory to the
board of trustees. The indebtedness of
the Home ie the most serious obstacle
to its permanent success. An effort is
now making to lift this burden, and
we trust that every philanthropist will
respond liberally to the appeals of the
agent.

This work has assumed a magnitude
not anticipated in its first inception.
Having commenced if, I do do not fed
like surrendering it now. '
It requires time, patience, a vast
amount of labor and expense. Will
not then the business portion of the
city come to my aid by giving me liber
al advertisements? Do not turn me
empty away when I call upon you,
which I will do from now on until the
work is ready for the press.
I am making the work as exhaustive
as possible, and one that will serve as a
reference book in days to come.

We take pleasure always in saying a
word in behalf of true merit, and do
not think that we could express our
sentiments better upon the aubjaot no
ticed than by copying the following
from an exchange;
“An old Latin maxim is, ‘Poeta na6-
citur, orator fit:’ ‘A poet is born, an or
ator is made.’ The truth of this is dis
puted by some, but no mau will deny
that some men have a much greater
aptitude for attaining perfection iu the
arts than others have. Among those
who have a peculiar faoulty for design
ing and executing beautiful engraving
on silver and gold, J. E. Veal, jr., of
Rome, is oertainly entitled to honora
ble mention. Those samples of his
workmanship in which the subjeot ah
lows him a fair opportunity to show
what bp oan do, are undoubted^
to anything that is brought from the
Northern cities.”
