HOSTIFERi
What May be Done If Demo
cratic Officials be Dismissed-
The uietubora of tlio Radical (Jou-
gressioual Committee are laboring dil
igently with the fraudulent Administra
tion to procure the dismissal of all
Democrats from the Departments.
Hayes has expressed his willingness to
make a wholesale sweep of Democrats
from public positions provided the com
mittee can point out some way hy
which ugly consequences can bo avoid
ed. Such a course would be a virtual
declaration of war, and would he so ac
cepted by the Democrats. In propor
tion to the amount of patronage it con
trols, the Democratic party employs
more of its political opponents than
the Republican party by very large
odds. Republicans hold some of the
best paying positions under Congress,
and not a few of them either. Under
both House and Senate this is the case,
and should the Democrats be ousted
from the Departments on account of
their politics, the order to remove them
would call for one banishing Republi
cans from the Capitol. The Democrat
ic Senate has been exceedingly liberal;
at least ten per cent, of the patronage
has been allowed to remain in the
hands of the Republican incumbents
who were appointed under the old re-
S ime. The Democracy, out of respect,
eclined to remove a brother of Senator
Blaine. The gentleman is an efficient
employe it is true, but so are the Dem
ocrats whom it is Bought to get out of
the Departments. Mr. HayeB and his
heads of Departments will not remove
the Democrats; they are not so foolish
as that. With a Congress Democratic
in both branches, “it won’t do” for the
Administration to open a fight of this
kind. Should Hayes accede to the de
mand of his party committee, it will I -L P»g«a, now reedy for sals, is well printed
not di8tres8 the Democracy OS a party; on good paper and neatly bound in muslin,
it would only make the leaders tighten >* embreoss a seriea of Letters wrltton frem
their grip on all the patronage that be
longs to them, and the men ousted from
Departments could be provided for by
putting them in the places of the Re
publicans holding office at the Capitol.
Hayes understands that this policy
urged upon him is a two-edged swora,
and would cut disastrously.—Wash

Ancient Fancies Regarding the
Beard.
Mr. Darwin, is his “Descent of Man,”
inolines to the belief that the beard was
originally ornamental. Ladies liked a
bearded man, he was popular in primi
tive society, could select the fairest of
the fair, his offspring resombled him,
and so on, according to the popular
statements of thiB theory of aeleotion.
“There is no wifeforabearded man,”
says the • Maori proverb. The North
men who settled in Iceland were en
tirely of the opposite way of thinking,
and the only reproach that his foeB
brought against Njal was his lack of a
beard. The Egyptians, as a rule, were
clean shaven, eBpeo’ally the priests,
"and for this they gave a certain sacred
reason,” which, imitating Herodotus,
we "do not think it lawful to divulge.
The neighboring Libyans, on the
other hand, were bearded, and the
northern maritime enemies of the Egyp
tians, probably the early Greeks, wore
rather thin, yellow beards. Yet out of
shaven Egypt the Israelites carried
beards which they highly respected.
To cut an envoy’s beard was a gross in
sult, and'he was obliged to tarry some
where till his beard was grown.
Friends might gently touch the beard in
a reverential sort of way, and thus Joab
took hold of that of Arnasa and ran
him through the body with his sword.
The Assyrian Kings wore cnormoUB
beards in many curled tiers or stories,
and we have an impression that some
Orientals carried their beards in a box.
Dr. Doran, in wricing ou the beard,
gravely maintains that the early Greeks
were shaven, a,id that they Called all
bearded and alien raoes “barbarous,”
connecting the word with bsrba, a
“beard.” But Homer’s Greeks, we
know, wore their beards, and the races
recognized as Greek on the Egyptian
monuments are somotimes bearded.—

Success iu the Stock Market.
Few people understand how large
fortunes are amassed so rapidly in
stock operations. Messrs. Lawrence &
Co., bankers, N. Y., have juBt published
“two unerring rules for success,” and
full details, so that any one can operate.
Mailed free. Their new combination
system of dealiDg in stocks is wonder
fully profitable. By this method thou
sands of orders, in various sums, are
pooled into one immense capital, and
co-operated as a mighty whole, thus se
curing to each shareholder all the ad
vantages of vast capital and best skill.
Profits divided every 30 days. $15
would make $75 profit, $100 would re
turn $1,000, or 10 per cent, on the stock
in the month, and so on, according to
the market. A New York fashion ed
itress and prominent newspaper corre
spondent made over 375 per cent, profit
on an investment, October 5th, 1878.
Many others are doing as well or bet
ter. Large or small amounts can be
used with equal proportionate success
by this system. All kinds of stocks
and bonds wanted. Government bonds
supplied. Apply to Lawrence & Co.,

REMARKABLE CURE OF SCROFULA, ETC.
CASE OF COL. J. C. BRANSON.
Kingston, Ga„ Sopt. 15,1871
Gents : For sixteen years I have boon a groat
sufferer from Scrofula in Its most diatrosslnj
forma. I have been confined to my room am
bed for fifteen yoars with scrofulous ulcerations.
The most approved remedies, for such cases had
been used, and the most ominont physicians
consulted, without any decided benefit. Thus
prostrated, distressed, desponding, I was advised
by Dr. Ayer, of Floyd county,Ga , to commence
th* use of your Compound Extract Stillingia.
Language is as insufficient to deaeribe the relief
I obtained from tho use of tho Btillingia as it is
to convey an adequato idea of tho intensity of
my sufiering before using your medicine; suffi
cient to say, I abandoned all other remedies and
continued the use of your Extract ot Stillingia,
until I can say truly, " I am cured of all pain,’’
of all disease, with nothing to obstruct the aotivo
pursuit of my profession. More than eight
months h&ve elapsed sinoe this remarkable cure
without any return of the disease.
For tho truth of tho above statement, I refer
to any gentleman in Bartow county, Ga, and to
the members of the bar of Cherokee Cireuit, who
are acquainted with me. I shall over remain,
with the deepest gratitude,
Your obedient servant,

from the elbow to the shouldor joint came out.
Many pieces of hone cams out of the right foo'
