An Amateur Acrobat oil a Tight Rope Across Passaic Palls. New York Sun. Some weeks ago Harry Leslie walked across the chasm under the Passaic Falls in Paterson on a tight rope. Geo. W. Dobbs, an acrobat of Paterson, vt hose father is now dead, was once city marshal, immediately advertised that he would do all that Leslie did, and more too. Dobbs kept his word, and surprised the Patursonians. Then Dobbs advertised another performance of the kind that was to be yet more startling, on September the 4th. This was post poned on account of stormy weather until yesterday. Yesterday a great throng gathered at the falls, many having come from long distances to witness Dobbs’ perform ance. Washington Letter. Washington, Sept. 16,1$79. There was a bad and threatening bolt from the New York State Convention last week, made up of certain leaders and followers of the Tammany Hall section of the Democracy of New York city, But it was then evident, and is now certain, that outside of the city the bolt had few sympathizers and less sup- i, and it is now equally certain that only a email portion of the city Democracy will follow John Kelly and companions into the camp of the enemy, Mr. Kelly announced, when he received the bolters’ nomination for (lovernor, that his purpose was to ruin the party if he could not rule it. That is not the talk that rulers make, or that Democrats approve. Mr. Kelly [and those of the Tammany organiza tion who follow him will find, long be fore election day, that, though the party may he necessary to them, they are not necessary to the party. Victory can be [achieved without them, and will be. The National Board of Health traces [a very favorable distinction between [the yellow fever of 1878 and that of. the 'resent year. Another advantage we iow have is in the much more prompt 'fforts to check the disease. The Ho.w- "Is anticipate an increase in the num r of new cases at Memphis, but with he financial and other aid offered they mfidently expect to prevent any such pneral spread of the disease as in 1878. There will he a grand reoeption for |en. Grant when he reaches San Fran- iseo, whioh will bo probably during 'h'l week. It will be all the heartier ranse it will have no partisan com 'lesion whatever. The absurd scheme f turning the Radical party of the hole country into a recoception com mittee to meet the. General at San Francisco has been, abandoned. If Nrds mean anything, Gen. Grant is fit °T the Presidential race by his own ^declarations. A rope about an inch and a half in diameter was stretched from bank to bank, below the falls, being fastened to two trees 224 feet apart. The wator foamed and eddied seventy feet below, sharp-cornered bowldeis themselves a little below the surface. After some preliminary performances by two or three acrobats, Dobbs dressed tights and carrying a thirty-six pound balanoing-pole, started across the chasm. He seemed perfectly cool, and his paoe was almost a run. Then he orossed back, walking backward on the rope. Next he opened a bottle of wine, poured out Beveral glasses for spectators, and going to the centre of the rope, poured the remainder of the wine into a glass, drank to those on shore, who swallowed their wine at the same time. As Dobbs threw the bottle high into the air a sharp report was heard, and there was a frightened cry from the spectators, who thought the rope had snapped asunder. But the flying bottle was shattered to pieces, and then it was seen that the report came from a gun in the hands of Chris tian Rineharat, who stood on the shore. Dobbs threw twelve glass balls into the air, and Rinehardt shattered them all, in accordance with a fifty dollar wager. Dobbs had advertised to carry a twelve years old boy across on his back, but the city authorities forbade the act, and Dobbs obeyed them, although the chosen boy cried to go. Dobbs had ar ranged to walk across in a sack and with peach baskets on his feet, but some of the spectators interfered and persuaded Dobbs’ friends to take the saok and baskots away. Then Dobbs put a small hoop over his ankles, which prevented him from stepping more than a few inches, and walked across and back, throwning cakes at the ladies on the shbrs. Feats by the other gymnasts followed; one, oalled the “iron-jawed man,” being pulled across the river on a rope stretched over from Morris Mountain, while he supported himself by his teeth, and fired revolv ers, waived flags, and threw glass balls to shoot at. Later in the afternoon Dobbs repeat ed his performances, and in the evening there was a flying trapeze aot, in which a performer named Mat Loxley, in taking a sixty feet leap, missed his aim and fell among the spectators, breaking his nrm and dislocating his jaw. That ended the performance. How Maine was Carried by the Radicals. A Portland correspondent of the Hart ford Times writes to that paper as fol lows : Not all the votes which were cost for Davis were secured from love of the Re publican cause or admiration of an hon est dollar, or party prejudice, or fear of Democratic ascendency. It is a shamo to be obliged to record that there was much bulldozing of a “civilized sort” resorted to by wealthy firms and rich corporations and manufacturing estab lishments upon their poor employeo. Many workmen were discharged for avowing their purpose to vote the Green back ticket. Many cases of this nature can be named to the shame of the State and our New England civilization. Then the votes of many army and navy pensioners were influenced by threats of the examining surgeons and others, that if they did not vote the Republi can ticket their pensions should be with drawn. This disgraceful appliance is thought to have added materially to the vote for Davis. The search of Con- ;ressional committees for cases of bull- lozing and intimidating voters would be promptly rewarded by a visit to Maine. It would seem that Congress should take some notice of the threats made to the disabled defenders of the Union, and it is understood that the case of one pensioner in Oxford county, who was cut off on account of joining the Greenback party, will be presented before Congress early in the next sea- ~ ! on. Just as Effectually. There is no swear words in the Sioux language, it 1b said. But don’t let your sympathy go out to the poor red man on that account. He doesn’t feel the loss of them. When anything doesn’t please him—when, after carefully sharpening his lead pencil, the point snaps off—in stead of relieving himself with a string of oaths, he mutters two or three terri ble-looking, five-story words with bay windows and mansard roof, and rushes out and soalps a pale face. ThissootheB his angry feelings just as effectually as if he had all the profanity of the French language at his command. BRADFORD’S Liver & Dyspeptic Medicine The Real Issues. St. Louis Post-Dispatch. There are a great many Democratic platforms and planks, but it seems to vfs the real, vital issues of the day can be touched in a few questions. Shall the Democratic majorjty rule, or must it submit to a Republican mi nority ? ... Shall the will of the people be obey ed, or the will of a few daring political desperadoes ? Shall a party be continued in power whioh openly refuses to obey both the law of the land and the votes and voioes of the people? Shall the Republican party own this republic as if in fee simple? Shall Grantism, imperialism and cor ruption take the place of honest local self-government ? Shall the people not only condone fraud and crime, but elevate and pro mote its perpetrators ? Shall tho minority party, now )n power, submit to the majority 1 Shall the South bo governed by lie- publicans from Washington, mstoad ot governing itself? Shall there be real ppaoe, reconcilia tion and patriotism among the people or must there be eternal hatred flue Shall centralisation and sectional fa naticism accomplish what secession failed to accomplish ? Saratoga correspondence New York Sun: It is an odd fapt that but few bridal parties come to Saratoga. The effects of the waters are not only unro- ro antic—they discourage amatory feel ing. If they will only take the water, emo tional people can safely depend upon the Spa to keep them out of mischief. Tho Florida canal project is not dead. Mr. Eugene Speer, formerly of Ma con, and well known throughout the. State, has been appointed Tally Cletk of the House of Representatives at Washington. It is the same place whioh has heretofore been filled by Col onel A. R. Lamar, and the salary is 82, 500 per annum. “I wish I were you about two hours,” she said, with great tenderness, “And why, my dear?” he asked with considerable interest. “Because,” she said, toying affection ately with his watch chain, “because then I would buy my wife a new bon net.” m “Where do all the flies come from ?.” querulously demanded old Mr. Gunny- bags, waving his hands frantioally aver his tormented head. “That isn’t the question,” replied his equally tormented partner; “when are they going back again ?
