Temple Bar.
AN EPISODE OF WAK,
In his wind shaken lent the soldier sits,
Beside him flares an oil-lamp (inokily,
Whose dim light glooms and flickers on the
sheets
01 rustling paper that, with eager eyes
And hesrt, intent he reads: Now with a smile
The flazen-bsarded, sunburnt face lights up—
A smile that in the smiling breeds a pain
Within his yearning heart: the gentlo hand
That those sweet, loving words hath traced
will he
Erer again in his protecting elasp •
Enfold it t Who can tell! He ean but k iss
With wild intensity the page that hand
Hath touched. Each lino, each word read and
re-read.
At last there is no more. With swimming eyes
He looks, and drinks her name into his soul.
Yet see those lines with pencil widely ruled,
Where largely sprawl big Istteis helplessly;
What do they say, those baby characters,
So fsebly huge 7
"Loyed Fspa,
When will you come home again ?
My own dear papa!"
As he reads this the tent to him grows darker,
Ills strong hand trembles, and the hot tears
burn
In his blue eyes, and blur the straggling words.
What need to see? The words are stamped
upon
His heart, and his whole soul doth feel them
The wirnTon gusty wings swoeps by, and lo 1
With its wild voice, his child’s sweet treble
mingles
In accentd faintly clear:
"Loved papa,
When' will you oome home again ?
My own dear papa 1”
And now his bead is bowed into his hands,
His brave heart for a moment seems to climb
Into his throat and ohoke him. Hark! what
sound
Thus sharply leaps amorg and slays the sad
Wind-voices of the Autumn night, with shrill
And sudden blast ? The bugle call "To arms !”
And staftled sleepers, at its Corco appoal,
Half dreaming, clutch their swords, and gasping
wake,

II. HARPOLD
No. 55 Yancey Block,
BROAD STREET, ROME, GA..
One
in Wall. Street.
October 7,1878, Western Union Tel
egraph stqck sold- at the New York
Stock Exchange for 96:18 per share;
October 14, 1878, it sold at 86.3-4, a
fluctuation of 9.3 8 per cent in Beveri
days; 12,000 shares sold on a margin of
one per cent required an actual capital
of $12,500. The same stock delivered
at 86.3-4 gave a profit of 9.8.8 per cent
on the Btock or $937.50 per 100 shares.
On the whole 12,500 the actual profit
was $117,187,50 or 9.3 8 times the cap
ital used, in one week. ThiB is a single
case taken from the official record of
the Stock Exchange, and shows how
money is made so rapidly in Btooks,
Few people, however, have the necessa
ry cash to put up in order to realize
such immense profits as these, but capi
tal in any amount from $10 to $50,000
can be used with equal success by the
new combination system of operating
in stocks which Messrs. Lawrence &
Co., bankers, New York, have estah
lished. By this method of pooling
thousands of orders in various sums and
operating thpm as one immense capital,
shareholders realize large profits whioh
are divided pro rata monthly. New
circular contains two unerring rules for
success, and full information, so that
any one can operate profitably. Stocks
and bonds wanted. Government Bonds
supplied. Apply to Lawrence & Co.,
hankers, 57 Exchange Place, New York
City. '
The necessary steps toward an im
proved husbandry are: To cultivate
less land. To make that whioh is cul
tivated rich in plant-food, so that it
may produce large crops.. The prac
tice of a rigid system of rotation of
crops, and mixed farming. The culti
vation of the grasses and less of hoed
crops and feeding up'on the farm the
moet of its products. Enriching the
land by turning under green crops.
All starch in potatoes is found very
near the surface, the heart oontains but
little nutriment. Ignorance of this fact
may form a plausible excuse for those
who cut off thick parings, but none for
those who know better. Circulate the
injunction, “Pare thin the potato skin.”
When a man has a hole in the toe of
one of his socks, and is pulling on a
tight boot, and the sock works ui
around his instep, then is no time to asl
him his private opinion of Pantheism as
an orthodox doctrine.
The Philadelphia Times says the
consumption of the cotton mills in the
South has increased twenty-six per cent
during the past year, while the gain
has been but two per cent, among those
at the north.
