Experiment in Grafting
Major John Rice, one of the most ex
perienced and practical fruit growers of
this whole section, told us a few days
ago of tho results of an experiment in
grafting, which we think worthy to bo
made known. He took the crab apple,
the wild variety common in this coun
try, and grafted it on a good variety of
apple, and the result was a prot'uso
bearing tree like the crab, but a decided
improvement in the apple, both in size
and flavor. He thinks from this that
by grafting that tree on a horse or other
large apple that he will succeed in
bringing the crab up to a high standard
in size and flavor, and at the same time
preserve its prolifio and hardy qualities.
We hope he will provo successful, and
will be glad to have him report results
to us for the benefit of fruit growers.
This is the second instance that wo
know of where the crab has been graft
ed on the apple, and in both cases the
result was tho same. A gentleman
showed us a limb containing an unusu
ally large number of apples grown
upon a grafted crab, and the fruit was
fully double the size of tho crab and
much less acrid. He esteemed it the
most valuable tree in his orchard, as it
bore so bountifully and the fruit made
such fine preserves.-—Thomasvillo TCn-

Profitable Stock Investments.
Beefore Messrs. Lawrence & Co., the
New York bankers, inaugurated the
combination system of operating in
stocks, it was often very difficult for in
experienced operators, or oven, old
stagers, to deal profitably by their single
handed ventures. Now the field is open
to every one for successful operations,
and capital in any amounts, from $10
to $20,000, can be used with equal pro
portionate profit. Instead of distract
ing efforts among many customers, the
orders of thousands are concentrated
into one vast pool and co-operated for
the benefit of all, dividing profits pro
rata every month. A prominent citizen
of San Francisco made $1,264.83 from
an investment of $.300 last month.
Other customers are doing better still.
$25 pays $125 duribg the month, $200
return $1,200 or 6 per cent, on the stock,
and so on as the market moves. New
circular contains “two unerring ruleB
for success,” and full instructions for
any one to operate profitably. All tho
advantages of unlimited capital and
careful manipulation are secured by the
combination method. Stocks and bonds
wanted. Government bonds supplied.
Deposits received. Apply to Lawrence
it Go., Bankers, 57 Exchange Place,
New York City.
Opinions from Indiana-
Secretary of State Shanklin—“New
York and Indiana are tho only two
Northern States left where the Demo
crats have fighting grouud. The defeat
of Robinson means that Tilden is out
of the race, and tho election of Potter
means that ariy Democrat but Tilden
can carry that, State. The ticket will
be Hendricks and Potter, and it now
looks as if it would be a winning one.”
Treasurer of State Fleming—“It is
too early to express any opinion.”
“Will the election help Hendricks?”
“It won’t hurt him any.”
“And for Tilden—’’
“He’s out of the race.”
Gov. Williams—“You may put me
down as knowing nothing about the
matter at all.”
He Wanted “de ’Lowance.”
Columbus (Miss.) Indox.
A colored man who had contracted
a debt some years ago with one of our
merchants came to town yesterday and
called on his old creditor.
“Didn’t you ’splain to me dat if I set
tled up dat account you would give me
a ’lowance?” said the darky to the mer
chant.
“Yes, I did say so, Sam,” said the
merchant. “If you are ready to settle
your bill now I will make a good al
lowance,” and the merchant waited for
the colored individual to pull out his
pocket-book.
“Well, sir, I hasn’t got de money jes’
now, but I thought I’d come in and got
de ’lowance; my wife, wants a shawl.”
“Ouida’s” name is Rosa de la Rama,
and she is the daughter of a French
man. More information than this the
most indefatigable interviewer has not
been able to get from the author. She
lives in a lovely villa about two miles
from Florence, where she is surrounded
by books, pictures aDd, what she prizes
more than both of these, dogs. She has
a burying ground on her place for her
dogs, where they are laid away with a
tenderness that is not always bestowed
on the human race. Ouida was an un
known writer, glad to earn £1 a page
for her magazino stories, when her nov
el of “Grantville de Vigne” made her
reputation, and now every novel she
writes finds a ready market at $7,000
The Philadelphia North American
claims Maryland as a “Republican
State on a fair and honest vote.” The
impudence and intolerance of the Re
publicans will now go to tho extreme,
since the New York election. There is
every probability that they will “slop
over” as to their future methods of kill
ing off the Democratic vote 60 freely
that they will ruin their chanceu next
year. Their anti-Republican designs
are so distinctly formulated that Amer
icans who desire to retain a Republican
form of Government can not be deceiv
ed—Courier-Journal.
