From Cincinnati to Columbm,
The completion of the Cincinnati
Southern Road to Chattanooga will be
a time of rejoicing "all along the line ”
and Cincinnati will extend a welcome
to the people of the South, for the pur
pose of gaining friends and trade. There
will be a free ride to Cincinnati, (and
free hash perhaps,) about the first of
January. We suppose cards of invita
tion will be sent to a limited number of
Romans, and hope that the courtesy
will be acknowledged by a full quota
of Rome’s best business men going up
and enjoying the hospitaltty of the
Buckeyes. While pleasuremight be the
ostensible object of the trip, we hope
that all who go will make it their busi
ness to talk for Rome and for the ex
tension of the Cincinnati Southern line"
to Rome and Columbus. Stopping at
Chattanooga, that great highway is only
just on the border of the land it ought
to penetrate. All obstacles of any mag
nitude are passed, the lofty mountains
and broad rivers are crossed, but still
the fertile valleys and rich praries lie
further South. To reach these is an
easy matter, as the topography of tbe
country is such that a track can he laid
for miles at- a time without the use of
pick or shovel, except to drain the road.
We hope the Chamber of Commerce
and City Council will not forget to have!
Rome well represented.

An Imposter.
All Free and Accepted Masons are
hereby notified that one James M. Fur-
gerson, a man of middle age, small stat
ure, black eyeB, who is traveling through
the country proposing to repair, clean
up and repaint soales, etc., representing
himself to be a Mason and belonging
to Rogersville lodge No. 16, Tennes
see, is an imposter. See the. following
letter:
Rogersville,Tknjl, Nov. 20,1870.
Mr. J. I. Wright, W. M.:
Our W. M. has just handed me your
postal of the 17th inst., inquiring as to
one James Furgerson. He is not and
never has been a member of this Lodge,
which is Overton Lodge No. 5, and not
16; besides we know no one of that
name.- An imposter no doubt.
— Respectfully,..
W. H. Watterson,
Secretary.
Pass him around.

The Price of Coal.
The Chattanooga Times says Rome
pays 25 cents a bushel for coal by the
car load and 30 cents at retail. Tbe
Times is mistaken. Rome does not pay
more than half the sum stated, by the
car load, in quantities for manufacturing
purposes. A coal dealer offered to sup
ply one company recently at $3.10 per
ton, which is under 12 cents per bushel,
and failed to make a trade, receiving the
reply that “we are doing better than
that.” We recently paid only 22 cents
a bushel for a few tons of lump coal of
the best quality, for domestic use, and
families are supplied with best lump
coal at about 18 cents per bushel when
several tons are bought in the early fall
Cotton Comes from South Alabama to
Rome.
Yesterday Messrs. Gowan A Samuel
received 375 bales of cotton from Green
ville, Ala., to be sold in this city.
Greenville is some thirty miles South
of Montgomery.
This proves that the reputation of
Rome as tbe best cotton market in the
South is rapidly extending. The prob
ability now is that the receipts at this
place will this year exceed 100,000
bales. “Let her roll,” our cotton men
know how to manage it to advantage.
