A Visitor After Thirty five Years Absence
On Saturday last there whs to he
seen a stranger walking up Main street
.villi Mr Jami h Edwards, stopping oc¬
casionally to point out old places that
he knew, llis appearance was that of
a man past the meridian of life, tall,
erect, with rather a military walk, and
his white flowing heard, in contrast with
a plain Idack suit, made him a notable
stranger. Boon lie began to meet some
ol our old cifizons, and w s recognized
as Goiter J James W. H lines of Texas.
The General Was once well known here;
a brother of Captain Ed. Barnes, lie
wa«, with Jones Me Loin ore, Sheriff of
Hancock county in 18.27 'ii-S ; and was
a member of tlio 11 uncock iJIu. s, com
(minded by Cupt. JJrown, in the Florida
w«r of lM.'iti, For the past thirty-four
years the General has resided in Texas
and is now cngagi d in the interest of a
Texas railroad known uh the “I.one
.Star Jtouto”—the short and direct route
to the central poilioti ol Texas from
Memphis and .St. Louis—of which road
ha wus vice-president lor many years.
It is rciresiiing to hear tlie General
portray tlio beauties of Tixas, its rieli
lands, its railroads, its lin^ and health¬
ful climate, and other advantages.
Texas is a great country; hut tlio Gen¬
eral is candid enough to admit that
Georgia is u great country too! In
speaking of our town, lie says that al¬
though ho has been here a week.in
elu ling Suturduy (a kind of holiday
with us), lie lias seen mitlier spirituous
liquor nor drunken men, and beard no
profanity j that, we have the best worked
streets, the uicc-t Hide walks, and the
cleanest, town ho b us seen in traveling
two thousand miles.
We ure glad the General has his fain
ily with him, and that lie intends to
spend the spring and summer month

Wc are pleased to see that the I.cgis
la'uro lias enacted a law setting apart
the 20tli of April as Muuoriul day. It
is eminently proper that one Jay should
be made a legal holiday, in which to
decorate the soldiers’ graves. This
beautiful ceremony is cherished by the
noble women of tho South in testimony
of their love for those braves whose
lives were sacrificed upon the altar ol
liberty. Ibis custom has prevailed CVt i
