About FurnHurr.
Furniture, made in winter and brought
from a cold warehouse into a warm apart
ment, is very liable to crack.
M«Mticino Slain*.
Medicine stains may be removed from
silver spoons by rubbing thorn with a rag
dipped in sulphuric acid, and washing it
off with soap suds.
To Clean Furt.
Shake and whip them well; then brush ;
boil some flax seed, dip a rag in the water
and wipe siightly. This makes them look
nearly as good as new.
To Remove Oil from Carpet*.
To remove oil from carpets or floors, keep
fuller’s enrth upon it wet, renewing until
the oil is removed. Add ox gall to prevent
carpet colors from fading.
Tar and Pitch.
Tar and pitch can be removed by greas
ing the garment with laid or sweet oil.
Let it remain a day and night, then wash
in suds. If silk or worsted rub the stain
with alcohol.
Lam]) Wick*.
An exchange discussing kerosene lamps
says that if the wicks are eoaked in strong
vinegar for twenty-four hours, and thor
oughly dried before used, all smoke will be
avoided, the wicks will last longer, and
increased brilliancy will be secured.
Cure for Felon.
The following is said to be an infall'hle
cure fora felon: Blue flag-root and wild
turnip root, a handful of each, stewed in
half a pint of hog’s lard—strain it off, add
to it four tablespoonfuls of tar, simmer
them together ; apply this to the felon till
it breaks. Add beeswax and rosin to the
ointment for a salve, to dress it after it is
broken.
Fatten Your Turkeys.
Do not kill the turkeys until they are fat.
A poor bird is always fdow of sale, even at
a low price ; while a good one will sell much
quicker, and bring from three to five cents
more per pound. Reckon the last two
pounds at the extra price the turkey will
bring, and every turkey-raiser will see that
these two pounds bring nearer fifty cents
a pound than twenty-five.
Ileun Soup.
Clean and wash the beans over night,
and pour on cold water next morning; put
them in a pot with plenty of soft water ; if
soft water is not available, add a teaspoon
ful of soda ; boil half an hour, then pour off
tho water ; turn on fresh hot water ; to two
quarts of beans add five pounds of the lean
of fresh beef and one pound of pork ; cut
up in small pieces; season with pepper;
skim as soon as a boil is reached, and keep
closely covered until done.
A Preservative of Wood.
The best preservative of wood is said to
boa compound of one part silicate of po
tasKa and three of pure water—the wood to
remain in the solution twenty-four hours,
then dried for several days, then soaked
and dried a second time, and subsequently
painted twice over with a mixture of one
part water-cement and four of the first
mentioned mixture. Thus prepared it will
not decay in the ground and will be in
combustible out of it.
A Pin-Colored Pancake.
• Boil a large beet root tender, and beat it
fine in a marble mortar, then add the yolk
of four eggs, two spoonfuls of flour, and
three spoonfuls of good cream, sweeten it
for your taste ; gra*e in half a nutmeg and
put in a glass of brandy; beat them all to
gether half an hour, fry them in butter,
and garnish them with green sweetmeats,
preserved apricots, or green sprigs of myr
tle. It is a pretty corner dish for either
dinner or supper.
Quince Growing.
An Ohio quince grower has been very
successful for two years past w th bis fruit.
Ilis treatment of the tree is very simple,
lie spades the ground of his orchard, every
spring, and scatters a peck of coal ashes
around each tree. He finds salt the best
manure for the quince, and applies about
one quart to the ground under each tree
after the soil has been spaded, and another
quart when the quinces are about half
grown. Last year he sold three hundred
bushels of quinces from his orchard of
three-fourths of an acre.
Water Proof Boot Sole*.
If hot tar is applied to boot soles it will
make them water proof. Let it be as hot
ns tbe leather will bear without injury, ap
plied with a swab, and dried in by the fire.
The Operation may be repeated two or
three times during tbe winter if necessary.
It makes tbe surface of the leather quite
hard, so that it wears longer, as well as
keeps the water out. It is a good plan to
provide boots for winter during summer
and prepare the soles by tarring, as they
will then become, before they are wanted to
wear, almost as firm as horn, and will
wear twice as long as those unprepared.
Blind Staggers in Swine.
I saw in the Rural New Yorker of Oct.
22J, a method to cure hogs of the blind
staggers. 1 think I can give you a better
one :—When a bog is first taken with it,
take a sharp knife, commence at the top of
the bead, about even with the upper edge
ofithe ears, split to the skull two inches in
length, down about even with the eyes ;
put on to the skull a tablespeonful of black
pepper and salt, equal parts, pulverized
fine; rub it.in, close the wound as close
together as posstble. I have practiced this
for thirty years* and have never known it
to fail, if done before the hog falls for want
of strength to 6tand.— Daniel Blandin,
Lucas Cos., Ohio.—Rural yew Yorker.
Jellies.
According to Mrs. Kate Ilunnibee. all
berries are jellied in tbe same way. Press
the juicofrom them through a coarse towel;
add as many pounds of sugar as there are
pints of juice ; put in anew tin pan or por*
celain kettle, and boil twenty minutes, re
moving whatever impurities may rise to the
top ; pour elf into bowls or glasses when
quite hot; when cool, cover with paper
which has been dipped into the white of an
egg. To make jelly of apricots, quinces,
peaches, apples, and plums, remove the
stone iu those that have stones ; peel, core,
cut in pieces; cover with water, and boii
gontly until well oooked. Then strain the
juice through a jelly bag, and add a half
pound of sugar to a pint of juice. In making
raspberry jelly, use one-third currants and
two-thirds raspberries.

PATENT METALLIC
WHITE WIRE CLOTHES LINES.
"IATE beg leave to coll your attention to an entirely new article known as ‘‘Patent
f * Metallic White Wire,” possessing qualities which prevent it from ever corroding
or turning from its color during any number of years, and on which letters Patent have
been secured. It has been found to be the only article suitable for a Clothes Line. The
old fashion rope or chord always causes so much trouble and annoyance by breaking,
rotting out, and discoloring clothes, and by being obliged to be put up and taken down
every time used. With this
WIRE CLOTHES LINE,
You have none ot these annoyances, and when it is once put up it gives you no more
trouble. After using it we are confident you will fully corroborate the statement of
thousands,/)! others in its praise. Every family should, and will eventually have -me.
It will not rust nor corrode, though you may keep it in water t or aDy length of time
even salt water. ’
SIX REASONS WHY EVERY FAMILY SHOULD HAVE ONE OF THESE PATENT
EVERLASTING WHITE WIRE CLOTHES LINES:
Ist. You never have to take it out of the weather.
2d. It will last fifty years or more.
3d. It is the cheapest Clothes Lines in the world,
4th. You canoot load it heavy enough with clothes to brake it.
sth. It does not in any way discolor, wear or injure clothes that are hung upon it.
6th. It will save its price in saving clothes every six months you own it.
