To Bleach Straw I’lait.—Expose it to
the fumes of burning sulphur, in >t close
chest or box, or immerse it in a weak solu
tion of chloride of lime, and afterwards
wish it well in water. Water strongly
acidulated with oil of vitriol, or oxalic acid,
is also used for the same purpose.
Destroying Stumps. —A little excavation
is made under the stunr. p, between two of
the large roots, some combustible material
put in, and then set on fire. Previous to
this, however, some dry materials should
be piled around the root, above the surface
of the ground, and covered over with com
pact layer of turf forming a sort of c al pit.
It has been found, upon experiment, that
the stumps will burn in this way a number
of days, with a sort of subterranean fire;
and w hen the turf falls in, nearly all of the
root is found consumed below and above
the surface of the ground.
Now is the time to prepare for any emer
gency that may occur in the busy season
An extra spade or wlnffletree, and a reserved
supply of seed to replant in case of failure,
are often of the greatest importance. Next
month, active operations will be crowding,
and even now, at the South, out of door
work is going on. Trees should be ordered
at once. Stock of some kinds may be very
scarce, and it may be necessary to applv to
more than one dealer, in order to procure
the desired varieties. The assortment of
seeds is at its best this month, and it is well
to secure them now. The same with im
plements ; purchase the best, and have
duplicates of parts that are liable to be
broken. Test seeds, as far as possible, to
be assured from your own knowledge that
they are good. It is a great advantage to
the" purchaser and a convenience to the
vender, to order trees, seeds and such
things, well in advance. Seedsmen now
have their catalogues ready and their stock
in store. — Am. Agriculturist.
Canned Fruits and Vegetables. —The
prospects of a good crop of fruit and vege
tables this year suggests the canning uusi
ness as one thafc%ou!d very certainly prove
a lucrative one. 'The amount of canned
fru its and vegetables consumed is increas
ing every year, and these articles have be
come an important item of trade. One
retail house i.i this city has sold since last
fall over two thuu-and cans of tomatoes
alone, and other vegetables and fruits iu
proportion. This was for city consumption
alone, and > 8 but il single small item of the
whole amount sold. We have not the least
(J,.abt that a canning establisment at this
place woulo pay handsomely. It would
require some capital to go into it, but the
capital with profit, would very soon be
returned. Atlanta is accessible by rail to
fine fruit-growing sections of the State.
Fruit in abundance can be had as cheap as
it can be bought anywhere in the South ;
vegetables the same way. Hence, we are
pursuaded that no business would pay bet
ter or more rapidly. It only needs an en
terprising man, with some capital, to go
into it right.— A'lanti Sun.
The Cow's Intelligence. —That cows
have memory, language, signs, and the
means of enjoying pleasant association, or
combining for aggressive purposes, have
been recognized, but scarcely to the extent
the subject merits. Traveling in Italy
many years ago, we visited some of the
large dairy farms in the neighborhood of
Ferrara. Interspersed amongst much low
lying, unhealthy land, remarkable for the
prevalence on it of very fatal forms of an
thrax in the summer season, are tine undu
lating pasture lands, and tho fields are of
gre*t extent. We happened to stop at a
farm house one fine autumn afternoon when
the cows were about to be rr ilked. A herd
of over one hundred was grazing homeward.
The women took their positions with s<o"i
and pail f»lu B o p, tbc tn'use, arid as the cows
approached, unines ~rcre called out which
at first we thought addressed to the milk
maids. Rus», Floreuza, Guilia, Sposa. ond
many names which were noted by u* at the
time, were called out by theover-eer or one
of the women, and we were astonished
to see cow after cow cease feeding or chew
ing the cud, and make direct, sometimes at
a trot, f>r the woman that usually milked
her. The practice, we found was riot con
fined to one tarrn ; all the cows on each
farm knew tlmr respective names, and took
up their po-ito* in the open just as readily
as the indvidutj members ot some large
herds in this couitry returning from the
fields take up thAr places in the sheds.—

Preparing DkiedFkuiiv for Market.—
The following directing fur selecting, cur
pecking and shrw, jng dried limits for
market will be foun\ useful to all who
desire to obtain the prices :
Dried Apples—Select vund fruit, not too
ripe. Be careful to prA are them clean.
Let there be no specks of ye skm on any
part, and, above all, be suiy they are weil
cured. Dried apples coning to market
with specks of skin, or cores \nd seeds still
on, never meet ready sales at market price.
“Sliced” apples always pay f<ur additional
truuble, but where this is not done, let the
above, as to cleanliness, be observed. This
done, and dried of a bright color, they -will
sell readily f>r good prices.
Dried Cherries, with seed in, always sell.
They should be -a efully j Lked when ripe,
thoroughly dried, and kept as clean as pos
sible. “Seedless” cherries belong to the
most fancy of domestic dried fruit, and
nlwavs find ready market at good prices.
They require to be carefully dried without
being burned, and packed in their natural
stare. If mixed with molasses, or “doctor
ed” in any way it is detected at once, and
they have to be sold at a very reduced
price.
Dried plums should be handled in the
same manner as cherries.
Dried blackberries have recently become
quite a staple, and in many sections the
best paying crop that grows. When ripe
they should be nicely dried (not burned)
before packing. If packed before thorough
ly dried, they breed worms, become moul
dy. and lead to general dissatisfaction.
Dried rasberries always bring a better
price than blackberries, and should be
bandied in the same wav.
Quinces and pears r eat fine, thoroughly
peeled and enred nice, bring fair prices.
V Never mix different qualities in the same
package, as it is aiways discovered, and the
price will be based upon the poorest quality
in the package. Barrels are p Arable for
Shipping; and place a disungu.slnng mark
upon each package of the different grades.
let all barrels be oorreetly tared on the
side as well as the head. Follow these
