We learn from the Publisher, J. W. M. In

from all portions of the country. It deserves
it. \\ e advise Schools to try the Lesson

Publisher would forward on application;
or, what would he better still, order them

Os the many treats it ha-* been our good
fortune to realize, we can truthfully say
that, in point of sweetness we hare nerer
had one to equal the candy treat of one of
our esteemed lady friends last Monday.
Every rarity of candy, all ages, sexes,
sizes, colors and flavors, was set before us
to select and eat. until we considered our
selves sufficiently sweet to quit. Many and
lasting thanks f«»r euch an invaluable kind
ness.
We are much indebted to Geo. P. Rowell

hound edition of their American Newspaper
Directory. It conta ns accurate list-of all
the newspapers and ott.ei periodicals in the

of Canada and the British Colonies ; ar
ranged alphabetically by towns, giving
name, days of is-ue, politics or general
character, form, size, subscription price per
year, date of establishment, editors and
publisher’s names, circulation, &e. It also
contains a de-eripti nos the towns and
cities in wh eh they are published Geo.

Wg have been requested to ask those who
intend taking visitors during the District
Meeting to make it known to the commit ee
Ttie time is fast approaching and in orb r
tor the Committee to make proper arrange
ments for the entertainment and ample ac
commodation of visitors it is necessary for
them to know who will take delegates and
visitors, and how many they will entertain,
ihe arbor we learn will he built near the
Female Academy All who have devoted
their time and attention to raising poultry
and wish to dispose of it at a reas> nable
compensation can now avail themselves of
the opportunity. We hope all who have
any interest in the meeting will arouse their
energies and do all they can to pruinote the
interest of the meeting.
W K had the pleasure C«i the fourth of
hearing the good singing at Shiloh. Th'-re
were several leader' present and by al'er*
natlng the music was continued thiough the
entire day. The unusually warm weather
and one nr two showers of rain alone rnared
the superior pleasure of the day. We hardly
know what the principle theme of conversa
tion was among those who remained out of
doors because of the want of room in the
chinch. The groups were variegated.
Some speculated as to the future prospects
of dry weather and we judge that the popu
lar topic, love, was dwelt upon by others
from their peculiar looks and actions. As
for ourselves, we basked in the sunny
smilps of Misses. S. W\, A 11.. B S. and
F. 11. But few times have we bad the
pleasure of eating as good a dinner as Mrs.
Abner Lewis furnished us on this occasion.
We are gh*d u> find Th**maaton alw’avs
ready to discharge her whole duty. On
Thursday about noon, Mr. H«>ht. Perryman
found at the well in front of bin store, one
Mr. Joseph Sims, a Confederate soldier,
prostrate on the ground, and foaming with
blood at the mouth and nose, the result of
hemorrhage at the lungs. Mr. Sims was
w-nnded io the body at Petersburg, in
1805, and sent to College Hospital in Rich
mond. For two years after he was wound
ed he knew nothing. He was well cartd
for by the Sisters of Charity until just before
Christmas last, when he went to Texas, the
former residence of his parents. On arriv
ing at T«“Xas he learned that his parents
had moved to Savannah, Ga. H® *L®«» «*®t
out to walk to Savannah, as he was unable
to go otherwise. Qo arriving at Thnmaston,
he Was without money and almost without
clothes. Before the next train left, ample
means to pay bis railroad a< and eating hill to
Savannah Was raised arid put in his hands
and the pitiful wounded man went off uuier
the most grateful thanks.
While enjoying ihe super. or pleasures of
the singing nt Shiloh on t 6 F-*urtb. we
stole a few moments to visit Delray. We
were quite pleased with the ttopearance of
things. The surroundings c'e iriy indicate
the enterprise of Mes-ps Abner and J. F.
Lewis. They have a 6ne Sawmill In opera
tion and the house constructed sos a grist
mill. The machinery will soon he up and
ready to mash corn. They have also a
flourishing store from which they realise a
handsome income! We signed a petition
in connection «ith othe"B to have a Post
Office established there, and hope they will
succe< and Messrs. Lewis have on hand a
large quantity of laths, which they W'>uid
dispose of at a teasonahle price, they say as
low or lower than they can b? purchased in
Macon or elsewhere. Few places afford
better natural facilities tor the application
of machinery, and we do not doubt but that
with the engenoity and enterprise of Messrs.
Lewis - , they will avail them-efves oi such
advantages.

On the 5 h inst., Mr Sidney Gjbhon and
Miss Nannie Woodward, of this county,
plunged themselves into the ocean of wed
lock by the aid of Justice F. M Perryman.
May their pathway through life be hedged
in by the choicest jonquils of happiness,
the atmosphere they breathe freighted with
the aroma of conjugal affection and the
clouds of care unknown and unfelt by them.

Wg take from the statistical rabies, se’ect
ed from the reports of the United States
Commissioner of Education and compiled
from the most recent ..ffioinl returns th**
following figures: In 1860 the number of
white attending schools in Georgia was 94 »
680. The number not attending 141 774.
The number of blacks attending school whs
7. The, number not attend ing 187.495
The number of adult whites who were ab'e
to read and write 214.877. The number d*
colored adults able to read and write 1 104.
The number of adult, whites not aide to
read and write was 43.G84 and oumbor of
colored adults 190.509.
There are many now who cannot read or
wri*e and are unab'eto attend school. This
should not be allotted to continue. Noth
ing is more essential to the stability of our
government, and to the continuance of free
dom and liberty than mental aod moral edu
cation. A proper system of education
would do much toward removing these evils
We learn from the County C *mtnissioner
that there are more than one hundred chil
dren in this county so situated as not to
have the benefit of any school at all. Steps
should be taken by the B >ard to supply
their wants in this regard. Tne B ard met
and consumed Saturday and Monday last
in examining applicants for license and dis
cussing the questions of assessing tax and
repairing and building school-houses in the
county. After a lengthy and able discus
sion, <»n application of the Trustees who
were present it was agreed to assess a tax
to repair the school hoo*** in their Di-trict.
