Callateral Salutation. —Our fat men,
residents of Upson, and fat men visittng
their Upson friends cannot approach each
other sufficiently near face to face for cordi
al greetings; but are compelled to get
together side-ways in order to shake hands
and talk confidentially. If such men are
good subjects for musquitoes, as the college
girls say, we may expect a multitude of tbe
insects before summer is over.
The S inioon on M >nday evening cams
whirling through Thornaston. throwingdirt
in our eves, in at our windows and doors;
and it seemed that the thick cloud of dust
was determined to penetrate every crack,
crevice and corner in town. Business was
generally suspended. t’ >r a few minutfs, and
lawyers, merchants, clerks, ar.d a few gen
tlemen of liesure took refuge in some *up
p sed place of protection, but no use, the
simoon kept up its invasion until a small
shower of rain come and put the thing to
rest.
Our readers, especially those who live in
and around that flourishing little place.
The It «ck, are respectfully invited to read
the adverti»ment of Dr. Perdue, in another
column. The Doctor’s opporttlni’ieg have
been ample and he no doubt has at’rtiled
himself of them. II- 1 graduated, before the

highly complimented by the Atlanta papers.

A Loud fh,AP or ThunD’er in a Clear
Tuesday evening when the sun was
shining in all bis splendor there rVas unex
pectedly heard a loud report of lightening.
It was evident from the sound that it
had struck some where in the town and
soon it wa« ascertained that a shade tree at
Judge G. W. Davis’ residence had been
riven and that the electric bolt hed also en
tered his gate, there expending itself with
out further damage. Several years ago at
this same residence when occupied by the
present owner the house wao struck by
lightening, passing entirely through if; and
after selling his residence Judge D. removed
to the comrtry, and h s recently repurchas
ed and returned to his old when it
seems that tbe electric fluid follows his
n»ov€f.
This loud report also frightened a horse
of Mr. Cheney, at she tirrte attached to a
buggy «nd in charge of 8 deaf and dtf.nb
15th amendment, but by the timely assis
tance of citixens a runaway was prevented.
M ith sorrowful hearts a lsrgs congrega
tion of the oirixen* of our town and a great
many from the country met at the Bap
tist church at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning
to attend the funeral and burial services of
Capt, W. W. Bar -field. Hu. Masonic
hretheren were in charge of his remains
whioh were buried w-th the n«. U al and im
pressive honors of the frsfermty.
It was ►nd beyond expression to the
hearse bearing to its sepulchral home the
remains of one who has ever been among
theb-st of .Mir citizen*. who«e exemplary
has ever been of popular prai*e. whose in
fluence f..r good was rx’ended through all
life’s trials; and a- man who lived to love
hi* f-llnwmao and vindicate »he ways of
right and religion. Hi* social qualities and
kindlv nature contributed to the
of his companions, while the fruits nf friend
ships alone were relief to his own personal
suffering from a Blow ar and waet’ng disease.
We offer our kindest sympathies to his
friends and those bereaved one* to whom
he was endeared by the tenderest and
strongest tie* of love and relationship. In
his death the church has lost a good Chris
tian and society one of her best ciuxens.
The Moore Uott >n Gin. —W - would call
tbe attertio? of planters to this gin, adver
tised in to-day’s issue. This gin was estab
lished at Double WeDs, Warren county, in
1852, and until it was suspended, was the
most popular gin manufac ured in the State
or South. The Portable R >ll Box is the
greatest improvement ever made on a cotton
gin—by means of which, it is placed in the
power of every planter to regulate the pick
ing of hi* cotton. The planter can regulate
it so that lie can increase the quantity, or
lessen the quantity; and improve the quali
ty. Take rnora or less lint off the seed.
Pick dry or wet cotton, alike, clean.—Their
Cylinder Boxes are oscillating or out fric
tion, and their brush is made both fire and
rat proff- They also make the reparing of
old cotton gins a specialty; and planters
would do well to send their old gins down,
and have them made as good as new, at
from a third to one half the c ist of anew
gin, instead of allowing their gins to be
ruined by the many cobblers now roving
round the country. Messrs. Sawyer &
Moore are permanently located in Macon,
and they warrent all the work they do; and
freight being very low, we would advise our
farmers'to send their old gins down, and do
it at once, as it does not cst any more to
send your gin down now, and have them
ready wh n you want them, than it would
to Ber.d them later. So send them, at once,
Say we.
After the first week in August I will be
permanently in Thornaston. Will practice
in the United States Di*trictCourt, Sunreme
Court of the Sate, and Superior Courts of
Flint Circuit.
