Personal —We were more than glad to
have a call, yesterday afternoon, from our
very worthy young friend, Mr. K. 0. Sim
mons and his father from Crawford county.
Mr. Simmons wears ver T gracefully the
nch laurel, of orator, at the final eclehratiow
ofihe Deni >sthenian Society, of the Univer
6«'y of Georgia. M«v his efforts in after
life be wreathed with the same garlands , ■
his college labors.
A* ,om « our readers, no doubt wish
-ome»hing in !h« shape of Portable Engines,
Gns» Mills, Gin Gear or want iheir old Ma
chinery repaired, we refer them to Mr. E.
Crockett of Macon, Ga Our cemetery and
churches need fencing in, and the soldiers
graves should he enclosed. R iiing for this
purpose, for Private Dwellings and Public
Squares can he obtained from Mr. C; at
reasonable tig ires. Refer to his advertise
ment in another column and see if you do
not want something from him.
Our thirst has been quenched at last.
Every thing began to need rain very much
before we were blesed with a g.*od shower.
A light or heavy shower has fallen every
day, during the we* k, in or around Th*.m
ast-in. While the lightning on Wednesday
served a good purpose in cleansing the at
mosphere and giving it food to be imported
»o vegetation it proved fatal to a mule, be
longing to Mr C. 0. Smith. The shock
was too severe and immediate death result
ed.
Wr call special attention to the adver
tisement of Mr. B. G. "McKinney. He
offers his place for sale, four miles :rom out
enterprising town—just the right distance
for a pleasant cemetery retreat with all the
advantages of a spledid market. Whoever
makes the purchase will getde* : rah!e prop*
ertv, well located, in u community made up
of some of the cleverist peopie ot Upson,
and where corn cribs and meat houses hold
out the livelong year. Now is the time to
get a good home, or make a profitable in
vestment.
In another column wiil he found a very
enteresting and appropriate communication
in regard to enclosing our churches and
cemetery. We have alluded to the subject
and hoped the proper authorities would take
hold of the matter and perform a
duty that is due the dead and that i* due
to our own self respect as enlightened and
civilixed pe* pie. A communication some
time since came out in regard to the same
matter. Now a second and vre hope a third
and a fourth, if neoes*ary to accomplish the
desired end, will he furnished us. We hope
that another will not he needed.
Chai.treate Springs —We have enjoyed
another peaceful, refieshing rest, and drank
again of the clear, cool, sparkling waters of
Chalybeate. We reveled once more in the
delightful shades of a primeval grove, and
freshness of a mountain breeze ; we gazed
upon the green woodland, the beautiful
surroundings and magnificent scenery ; we
plunged into delightful baths, engaged in
the pleasant drives, mingled in joyous
past-times and happy associations. All
the attractions and delights ot the season
were in gay profusion ard full luxuriance,
u aking Chalybeate one of the most enjoy
able summer retreats it has ever been our
pleasure to attend.
The characteristic cordiality of our most
courteous friend, Col Howard, contribu'ed
still more to our already happy enjoyments,
llis nature to please makes him the favorite
and friend of his quests. A gentleman of
ceaseless activity, most affable manners,
and thorough knowledge of these summer
delights, he is certainly such a “prince of
landlords’' as best graces such a place of
summer resort. His associate director and
manager of these summer delights, Mr. R.
A. Mathews, never fails to increase the in
terest of each succeeding day, and we have
never mpt a gentleman who studies more to
please and succeeds better in his efforts
than this polite Clerk. With sucti gentle
men to superintend Chalyheate Springs
visitors neei no other assurance of a happy
season.
Asa watering place., these Spr*ngs are
too well and popularly known ever to fail
in drawing its tast crowds of health and
pleasure seekers. The extensive accommo
dations already there are crowded to their
utmost capacity Without infringement upon
the comfort and convenience of tisitors.
Others are building for themselves a tem
porary summer home, to live amid the
balmy breeaes and revel*-, in -• the taried
pleasures ot a liv-long season. Os the
four hundred visitors ft pw in attendance,,
many are from our crowded Cities. having
taken fefuge from dust and heat its recuper
ate upon the virtues of this mineral water
and enjoy the unrivaled amosetPents of
liveliest assignations. The lonely, beauti
ful, enchanting ladies, and refined and
courteous gentlemen whom we meet in the
hall of gavety, at the rink, slong the d'ive.
or on the grassy lawn, are full of sweetest
stwiles, and cheerttrl hearts, and bappy
lot*.
We coafd bat regret oarr *‘heart-warm

gladness and come ftppi* o #
pleasure's sparkling stream leaving its
welling fountain, rising pure amid these
everlasting shades.
Upson boasts of an etceedingly fine peach
crop this season. The trees have been

peaches were brought in town and sold oo
Thursday. Quite a quantity has been

replenished soon with the essence of peach,
no doubt, as quite a quantity is being made.

remarkaMs alacrity and since recovering
from the “m-etin” attack, commits some
wondrous gyrations. He was the most
cAeer-lcss of our entire corps immediately
after our last issue, and we would like to
present his appearance resting npon his
imagination for a sent., when the imagina*

trust his mishaps are over now. and no
further sympethy in his behalf will be so
