Eugenia L’gni —All who pusses? orchard
houses should procure a plant or two of
this myrtle. It fruits pr fusely. aud p >s>
senses the most delicious fl ivor imaginable.
In general apperanee it bears a close re
semb'anoe to the common myrtle (Myrtus
communis) It may be propagated iroely
from cuttings of the wood in a modeiate
heat. — Gardener's Weekly.
Beatrice Peach —The American Agri
culturist has received specimens of fbe Be
Htriee peach a seeding raiced by Thomas
Kivers, of Sawbridgeworth. England. Like
all early peaches if is small but of high
color, very fragrant and of good quality for
very early variety. Mr Bilgen finds it at
least twenty days earlier than Hale's Early
and possessed of superior shipping quali
ties.
Sweeney in Hordes — A correspondent
of the Cincinnati Gazette takes, to cure
this disease, equal parts of tallow, beeswax,
marrow (out of beeves' bones) aod sheep's
tallow, and from one gill to one quart of
whisky; also one tablevpoonful of salt.
Put the first four articles into a pot or ket
tle ; melt them together ; then put in the
other two articles, and then apply it to the
affected part of the horse ; bathe in with a
hot iron ns hot as the horse can bear. You
may work your horse right along.
Tlow to Make Hens Lay — Ed. Carolina
Fa rmer Having seen an extract in the
Star of the 10th inst., from the Poultry
Standard, headed, ‘*llow to make liens
Lay," it reminded me of a receipt which
was given me by an old lady friend ofmihe,
and which she says is infallible. I will
give it to you verbatim , sa she gave it to
me ; it as follows : Take s mething like unto
a kettle, put a half gallon water into it.
then add ingredients aH follows: take a sil
ver sixpence, chop it up into small hits,
half paper cambric needles, one handfi 1
charcoal, teaspoonful red pepper, mix into
a quart of corn husk, put (lie whole into the
kettle, stir it well, then add a rusty chain,
boil well ; take it off and let it cool, then
give it to the chickens three times per day,
then take a bruse and run them up a hill,
and she says “she will insure them, roosters
aod all to lay a shower of eggs."

Point of a Good Dairy C< w —ln buying
or rearing dairy cows, always try and have
them of some good breed. Grades of the
Ayrshire, Alderney or Short-Horns are the
best; she should he of medium size; fine
head ; broad between tt'eeyes ; eye of
a mild and pleasant expression ; small
horns of a waxy color preferred ; rather a
long neck, which must be thin but may be
deep, particularly where it springs from
the hi east; light fore-quarters; shanks,
from the knee down, short and fine ; barrel
round, arid ribs arching well from the
back; body long; back straight; hips
broad—can scarcely be too much so; tail
falling at right angles with the hack, and
should be long and fine; hind-quarters
rather long and thin ; udder weli developed,
particularly the forward part of it, teats
standing well apart, of medium size, and
pointing forward; the oat should he of
medium length, fine, and of a silky feei;
the skin should be loose and mellow, and
of a yellowish tinge.
Experience has taught us that a cow
combining the greatest number of the above
points is the most pr Stable for the dairy
man to keep. Such *a cow will give a
greater quantity and a better qual ty of
milk than a larger and coarser animal.
Our experience in different breeds has been
confined almost entirely to the native, but
we believe that judicious crossing with
milking families of thorough-breds, would
result in immense advantage to the dairy
farmer. Wo would not advise any one to
stock a farm with pure bred stock, of any
breed, believing thut grades of one-half or
three-fourths blood at the utmost, will be
found most profitable in the long run, for
milk and butter.
Value of Fodder Corn. —The Depart
ment of Agriculture has just issued a
statement presenting a long line of testi
mony from various sources on the value of
fodder corn as a supplementary feed or
soiling crop f«>r milch cows in summer.
We present below the conclusions deducted
from the testimony given :
1. Green corn fodder is neither worthless
nor the poorest of all soiling material.
2. It is the heat when planted in drills or
hills, not so thickly as to prevent normal
growth and development, cultivated to de
stroy weed and grasses, and cut between
tasseling and earing, when the elements
elaborated for production of the ear are
stored in readiness for immediate u*e
3. It is probable both from the rationale
of the case and from facts presented above,
that in the more northern latitudes a mis
take has often been made sowing thickly
Southern corn which cannot mature, the
fodder from which fed in August must be
very nearly worthless. On the contrary,
the fodder from Northern corn, especially
sweet corn, drilled and cultivated, and fed
ju-t before earing, is found to be very valu
able.
4. Its value, compared with lucerne,
millet, the best grasses, and other plants
containing a largo percentage of nutriment,
taking into consideration the quantity pro
duced and the cost of its production, has
not been determined fully, and should he
decided by a sesies-of thorough and exhaus
tive experiment.
It is evident from all that is conflicting
in the opinion of and fferent feeders, that the
differences are mainly due to the degree of
maturity or soundness of the corn. That
from thick sowing, immature colorless and
watery, is unfit to place before the cows of
any well regulated dairy. It is probably
that half that is fed is either improperly
cultivated or in a stage of growth not pro
ductive of the highest results. If this
should he the case, bow stupid to condemn
the maize for the ignorance of the cultiva
tor. If it is found to contain too little
nutriment for its hulk, or too small amount
of the flesh-forming clement, the suggestion
feut and in tho practice of some, of giving a
small amount of more highly concentrated
nutriment ia connection with com sod er,
is eminently wise This is a deficiency
easily remedied. While corn is our nation
al crop, less fastidious in its circumstance*
©f its growth than almost any other, and
capab e of yielding so largely under the
proverbial neglect which characterizes ou»-
culture, let nut this fodder he discarded
until something of greater practical value
is found, the superiority of which has been
actually demonstrated under local cireum
etanoea of soil, climate aud cultivatiun,—
