fIELD AND JIUOSEHOLD.
To drive t cks from sheep and lambs, feed
them frequently with a mixture of sulpher
and salt, using seven parts of salt to one of
sulpher.
feuoAH Cakes.— One pound of sugar six
eggs ; three quarters of a pound of butter ;
one nutmeg ; two teaspoonfuls of soda; one
cupful of cream. Bake in a quick oven.
A Western dairyman says the best reme
dy he has found for preventing cow’s hold
ing up their milk is to “take a log-chain
double it, then lay it gently over the cow’s
back or the ‘small of the back’—so that the
ends of the chain will clear the floor. The
cow loses the power of holding up her milk,
and after a few trials will forget the habit.”
A Potato Bug Tkap.—A man near Oswe
go has invented a potato bug trap. It is
made of zinc, some four feet long and two
feet wide* fashioned like a tray, with one
side two and a half feet high and the other
four inches. The front end is opened, and
the rear end closed. It is drawn by means
of a rope through the rows. An attendant
walks along the low side of the trap and
with a stick or broom sweeps the insects into
the tray. They are gathered from the hills
with the rapiditv at which a man can walk.
llow to Boke Holes in Glass. — Any hard
steel tool will cut glass with great facility
when kept freely wet with camphor dissolved
in turpentine. A drill bow may be used or
even the hand alone. A hole bored may be
readily enlarged by a round file. The rag
ged edges of glass vessels may also be thus
smoothed with a flat file. Flat window
glass can readily he pawed by a watch
spring saw by the aid of this solution. In
short the most brittle glass can be wrought
almost as easily as glass by the use of cut
ting tools kept constantly moist with earn
phorized oil of turpentine.
A New Enemy —A new and mysterious
enemy of sheep, m re fatal even than the
murderous dogs, has made its appearance
and dreadfully ravaged the flocks of Mani
towoc. Wisconsin. The animals being found
dead, no marks of violence pre to be observ
ed, save a small hole behind the ear, from
which the blood has been sucked. This
has led to the conclusion that the destroyer
is a kind of bat, or, more properly speaking
a vampire—a creature which even men may
fear, since it may not have an exclusive
taste for the vital fluid of the muttons. This,
the curculo and potato bug, render our pres
ent assortment of noxious vermin very com
plete.
The Grape. —German Agricutural Jour*
nal informs ns that the grapie vine can be
propagated by means of eyes, so as to save
three years time in the growth, each eye
furnishing anew shoot. Each grapesvine
will furnish as many shoots as it has sound
eyes and they are to be cut off about a quar
ter of an inch from the eye on each side, so
as to leave a cylinder of wood about half an
inch long, with the eye in the entre. If
prepared in the autumn, these eyes may be
put in a cellar in the winter. In April they
are to be laid down at a depth of two or
three inches in furrows apart, and covereu
with a little manure, watered in dry weath
er, and the earth about them occasionally
loosened.
The following valuable receipt for prepar
ing gingerbread is taken fr<*m a Canada
paper, and will bes >und well worth pre
serving : Git your ginger; melt molasses
till it biles over; melt some butter till it is
thin; stir it through the molasses candy;
multiply by wet sugar ; thrash some clover
and nmryander seed and grind them in the
hopper (clean out the hopper rfeady to grind
coffee for break ast. by running a few corn
meal through it) ; git a 12 !b sack of flour
on a credit; 2 cups of sour oil of Kine ;
beat somebody out of the eggs ; bear, the
eggs ; strain them to subscrac the shells.
Line the pun with red flannel, satutrate with
equal parts of coal tar and strong butter,
and pour in the mixture. Bake with a slow
fuse.
Judging S<>ii. by Timber —Almost any
one knows that the quality of soil may in a
great measure be determined by the timber
which grows upon it, but of the exact nature
indicated by the primitive trees people are
not so well posted. Mr. B. Smith, of Pat*
mog, Ohio, writes to the New York Farmer’s
Club of this matter and sat s that white oak
land is pour ; that red oak and soft maple
also indicates poor land; that thellhnrk
giostly grows in not land : that flat
cech and sugar lands are good for summer
crops and grass but not for wheat ; that
rolling beach and sugar lands where large
popular and black-walnut abound are tine
grnaing lands, and produce, when new, large
erops of all kinds of grain except wheat,
where it is winter killed ; that large white
oaks and chestnut growirg together, arid
black oak and hickory indicate a loose sub
soil ; and lands where the water soon sinks
iato the subsoil are ranch the most valuble
for grain, that a soil that will raise large
crODS of all kinds of grain, and then clover
and timothy, and after they run out will
come in with green grass and white clover
is the best.
Cube ofCiieese —Cheese, assoon as taken
from the press, or so soon as the surface be
comes dry. should be greased with hot whey
butter. The butter should be applied as
hot as can be borne by the hand, and well
rubbed into the sui face of the cheese. It is
necessary to apply the grease daily for the
first few days, after which a thorough rub
bing with the hand alone will generally be
found sufficient, unless surface becomes dry
and shows a tendency to crack or check,
when the hot grease should be again applied.
It is the practice in some factories to
grease only the top and bottom of the cheese
while in others, the whole surface, includ
ing the bandage, is greased when first taken
from the press, and afterward only the top,
a vigorously hand rubbing being used for
the remaining surface. This is the course
we should advise, after the bandage has
been once greased there is usually sufficient
oil in cheese to keep the surface smooth, if
the hand rubbing is kept up. When but
ter is usually employed for greasing chee«e,
though ordinary butter would of course
answer the purpose just as well if fresh—
that is, free from salt.
It should be remarked in conclusion that
no more grease should be used than suffi
cient to keep the surface smooth and soft;
otherwise it will accumulate in flakes and
give the cheese a rough, unsightly appear
ance and by adhering to the tables cause
the labor of caring for them to be greatly
increased. The great art in keeping cheese
in good order is turning them daily, and
thoroughly rubbing them with the hand or
a cloth. In reality, very little grease is
needed after the first application. The
tables should occasionally be washed with
hot whey which will keep them clean and
destoy any eggs which .nay have been de
posited by the cheese fly.—
