The chilling rains and whistling winds
tell iis that winter with its advantages to
some and its disadvantages to others, is fast
approaching. Provde for war in time of
peace is an old and good maxim. It has
been the case in some churches during the
winter that a good fire would contribute
much to the comfort of the house and enable
many to attend divine service who could
not without such a convenience. We do
not’charge such n Q glect on those whose
duty it is to make such preparations in our
churches, but wish merely to suggest that
such conveniences have much to do in
drawing to, or keeping from church many
who would like to attend.
The Phrenological Journal for De
cember is on our table. We are delighted
always to welcome its visits. Among the
various magazines and literary paper- which
visit our sanctum, none are perused with
more pleasure than the Phrenological
Journal. Its views are sound and suited
to the times. It is progressive and reform
atory, and is above dealing in vague arid
illusory schemes, like the most progressive
publications. We commend the work to
all who wish to read something worthy
their time and attention. The December
number contains many excellent things.

In another column will he found an ad
vertisement of the Singer Sewing Machine.
If you wish to purchase a simple and
durable machine, the Singer is the one you
are after. We purchased one sometime
since and learned to sew on it quite well in
one hours time. Our greatest difficulty
was to find the shuttle. We had seen
machines and seen them operated but had
never thought it would he necessary to u-e
one. Without an instructor we first con
cluded that we had the “Elephant,” hut
only a few moments sufficed to get into the
art of making the stitch. Perhaps it is
qnite fortunate for u 9 as we have not a
better half to supply our wants in the
sewing line.
During tbe week quite a number of hands
have been engaged in working the street*
and sidewalks. We notice that m pains
have taken than usual, and under thd
supervision of our very efficient Marsh »
new side-ditches have been dug, good foot
walks marie leading to both churches, and
other work done that will enable pedestri
ans to walk <»ur streets with much more
comfort, in wet weather, than heretofore
This is what our town needed, hut if all
persons owning lots in town, would pave
the street with brick or stone in front of
their lots they would be much better and
we would have a permanent pavement with
hut little cost to each individual. The
money spent in paving would enhance the
value of their lots m »re than it would cost
to buy and nut down the brick. The
streets leading to the depot, to the and ff‘*rent
churches arid the main streets in town
should be paved at any rate. Would it not
he a good idea for the Town Council or the
citizens to take this matter into considera
tion ?
We have received me December Folio,
which maintains its position as the leading
musicial periodical. The illustration this
month is of Camilla Urso, the celebrated
lady violints . The music is especially
appropriate for the season, six of its nine
pages comprising beautiful Christina- Car
ols ; and the instrumental piece is a charm
ing composition entitled ”S iy to him
W 7 «ltZ.” Tbe reading matter is up to i's
nigh standard, and if wi 1 commence its
new volume with additional attractions,

Sewing Machines. Another opportunity
to purchase the Florence Sewing Machine

counties and also a portion of Merriwpther.
He will make his headquarters at Thomas

The economy in time and labor will soon
