Beets are very nice cooked in the
following manner; Slice cooked
beets quite thin, put in a sauce-pan
1 ' X 1 vl3 j •
with some vinegar, water awl a piece
of butter, with sugar enough to make
palatable. jVny rule is impossible.
Taste it, and if any ingredient is
lacking, add tnoro of it; salt a very
little, and pepper; thicken the whole
slightly; serve hot. Beets may be
skinned much easier by rubbing over
with a cloth immediately on taking
them from the water in which they
are cooked, than by using a knife
and fork.
Cure for Klieuiuatiin. * >
A writer in the Cincinnati Gazette
gives the following as a sure cure for
rheumatism. He says : I got one pint
of the best rye whisky and put all
the saltpeter in it that would dis
solve. Os this I took one swallow
before each meal and one on going to
bed. I kept taking it in this way
until I felt perfectly well. But after
T was well I did not cease taking the
medicine all of a sudden ; but gradu
ally, by diminishing my dose, and by
taking it but twice a day, viz: morn
ing and evening ; and then after a
while, but once a day. At last 1 quit
altogether, and I now feel and have
felt for three ye ars as well as ever.
I can point to several cases here that
have been cured by the same remedy,
Old Kosr Hushes,
Many of our readers will find, no
doubt, a portion of their old rose
hushes apparently dead, but do not
give them up until it is found for a
certainty that this is the case.—
Usually if there is life in the roots
they will throw up new sprouts after
cutting the old stalks down to the
surface of the ground.
It is said that soot tea will lend
material aid. Take soot from a chim
ney or stove in which wood is burned
and make tea of it. WJien cold, wa
ter the rose with it. When all is
used, pour boiling water a second
time on the soot. The shrub will
quickly send out thrifty shoots, the
leaves will become large and thick,
and the blossoms will be larger and
more richly tinted than before. To
keep plants clear of insects, syringe
them with Quassia tea. Quassia chips
ean be obtained at any apothecary I *.

A Cure for the Pile.
The South Side Signal publishes
the following:
Editor Signal: —l feel it inv duty
to communicate to you the following
directions for the cure of the above -
named disease, and by giving public
ity to it no doubt you will confer a
great favor on many of the Signal
readers: In the first place, put about
one-half pint of cold ashes in the
bottom of a chamber and on tlieftc
ashes a coal of fire, and on the coal
a piece of rosin the size of a pea, or
a little larger, and sit immediately
over the burning rosin a few m-nutes
morning and evening, for a few days.
A cure can thus be effected at the
expense of less than two cents.
In proof of the above remedy, 1
would say I suffered extremely for a
number of years, earnestly sought
every remedy within reach that ap
peared reasonable, but hardly obtain
ed momentary relief, and feared I
should have to give up labor entirely,
as a neighbor of mine had done, and
had taken his bed expecting to die
with this disease, as his father had.
This was in May, 1870, and in a
most suffering condition, his doctor
failing to relieve him, a friend of his
hearing of his illness sent him the
above directions. I called to see him
the same evening, when he told me of
the cure; that he was immediately
relieved of the soreness and unpleas
antness of the disease. I went im
mediately home and applied the same
remedy, and was relieved in two
minutes of the pain and soreness, and
after applications of perhaps not more
than six or eight sittings over the
burning rosin, I was relieved of all
soreness and afflicted sensation. I
write thus particularly, for if only
one of yom* readers . hould be beue
sited as my neighbor a~d self have
been, he wilt have cause to regard
you as the instrument of conferring a
great blessing upon him. After two
year’s Siherarion from such extreme
Buffering I submit the cure or other
afflicted ones.
