Aspirants for Gubernatorial honors arc bo numerous in North Carolina, that it is proposed to have injunctions issued restraining thorn fVoiti allowing their names to be used in that con nection. Mr. Sumner ia still laboring in Congress for the passnge of a oill providing for the establishment of mixed schools. Ilis efforts thus far have been fruitless, for which ex tolled be A’lab. James Gordon Bennett, jr., of the New York Herald, has bet with Au gu tus Belmont, the Chairman of the Democratic Executive ( oinmittee, SIO,OOO against $4,000 thad President Grant will he re-elected. Bennett is wealthy and wou‘t mind the loss of his SIO,OOO. Col. L. J Glenn has been nominated by the Democrats of Fulton county as a cnndida’e for Bepresentative, the office being rendered va cant by the resignation of Capt. 11. Jackson. Col. Glenn is a sound man. and if elected will discharge tne duties of his position with ability. On Wednesday of last week the United States Senate had its full compliment of Senators for the fh>t time since the South Carolina mem bers withdrew in the winter of 1831. The representation of the whole thirty-seven States was completed by the admission without debate, of Gen. llansom, ol North Carolina. By the illegal sale of arms to Fiance during tho Franco-Prussian war, the Government jobbers realized the mu nificent sum of $8,000,000. This amount has not been paid into the Treasury, however, aud an investiga tion is necessary to determine by whom it was received and what dis position 4 was made of it. According to the last census this county is credited with a total popu lation of 9.43o’—white 4.8G5, black 4,50-3. ’ In 1860 the aggregate popu lation was 9,910, in 1850 9.424. in 1840 9,408, and in 1830 7.013. During the past ten years it will be seen that there has been a lulling off of 480, of which number 150 were white, the rest, 330. black.* lion. Thomas J. Speer, our Repre sentative in Congress, will please ac cept our thanks for a copy of the Ninth General Census of ti e United States. It is a valuable document and shall be preserved. lion. Thomas M. Norwood, Sena tor, will also accept thanks for the Patent Office Reports for 1808, 4 volumes. Ihe “Bread and Butter Brig ide,” which demands the re-election of Grant, consists of about 31,000 Post masters, 17.000 officers under the command of the Treasury Depart ment, with a signal corps of 3.000 more under different leaders, making in ail 51,000 noble patriots who de mand that Grant shall be kept in power in order that they may contin ue to hold office and serve the country for their own good. A well-uieuning, itinerant dealer in soap, lately presented every member of the Virginia House of Delegates with a bar of his cleansing compound. In a speech he made to them he said that it would thoroughly remove spots or stains from any article in lrom ten to fifteen minutes. Let the philanthropic but credulous ten dor take some of it to Washington and endeavor to remove the stains from certain Radical Congressmen. He would have a life-long jub of it. From a statement just transmitted to Congress by the Secretary of War, it appears that t r total number of negroes enlisted ir. the Northern .Army was 178.975. Os this number fully one fifth deserted, and thus in. vt* no claim upon the Government for pension. So “the colored tro ps fought nobly,” and are to have tin* pleasure of greasing up $20,000,000 of the National currency for their K 1 *yalty.” Wendell Phillips, in an address re cently delivered before the Interna* tional Grand Lodge of the Knights of Bt. Crispin, on the labor question, pH l l(d the workingimn ou the batik, promising them ihat they would elect the President Iti IS7*J. if they stood together and did notallow their Order to become the recruiting ground of other political organizations. A circular has been issued, signed by several prominent Northern mili tary men, suggesting that a Soldiers’ and Sailors' National Convention be held in New York city some time in May, to formally call upon the Philo udelphia (out-and-out Grant) Conven tion, to nominate a candidate Ur the Presidency other than the present incumbent. ; Two months ago the anti-Grant movement among the Radicals was laughed at as a thii g of trifling im portance, to-day it stands forth wiih almost the proportions of a revolution. A clear-sighted Administration paper alarmed at its rapid growth, counsels that caic he used by the friends of Grant in their dealing with ir, and lugubriously exclaims that ‘‘political affairs have taken a most serious turn.” Is the serious “turn” this pa per speaks of to be the twisting of Grant’s neck by the Cincinnati Con vention ? One George D. Orner, Collector of Internal Kcvenue for the Fifth Mis souri District, after stealing SIOO,OOO in the short space of two years, has been turned out by our honest Presi dent, because the ninny-hammer could not keep his affairs io himself. Orner now waxeth wroth, and being an in dividual ti considerable influence in middle Missouri, emphatically declares that he will earnestly support the nominee of the Cincinnati Convention, and through that organization labor to turn his former friend, the Presi dent, from the White House. i ins is an excellent illusti ation of the familiar saying that “one good turn desei ves an«*ther.” Tltt- \omiual u.n Mailt u t ti mi mutt i The names of lonian Trumbull and Charles Francis Adams are brought forward very prominently by the press as suitable and likely to compose the Cincinnati ticket. In some cases the one, and in about as many the other, is placed foremost. It seems to he undisputed that either <P them huii and make a good Vice-President or P.es iilent ; and many people think they could be elected. Judge Davis is as conspicuous as ever among tne candidates for the first place on the ticket. The gravest question in regat and to him is that, raised by the World, whether his opinion in the Missouri ease will weak en him with the Catholics —a very im portant element of political strength. The recent powerful letter of Gov. Palmer, of l liuois, in favor of the Cincinnati movement, has added some thing to the strength of Mr. Greeley. Somehow or other people seem to as sociate the two names toget er Greeley for President and Palmer for Vice-President. We suppose the New \<>rk de’ega lion will be unanimous for Mr Gree ley, and the voice of this great State will have a good deal of influence. Letters from all parts es the country speak kindly, and many of-them enthusiastically, oi Mr. Greeley. If he is nominated the canvass will be about the liveliest that will have taken place in this country. Llis nomination would kindle a great deal of enthusi asm in the ranks, lie brings to the new party a powerful support, and his name should be fairly considered in selecting a standard bearer. —New York £un. Next week we will give our readers an epitome of the proceedings of the Liberal Republican Convention, oth erwise known as the Cincinnati t on vent ion. Such a report will benefit those who have not access to pipers having full telegraphic news. All the (Southern delegates held a conference Tuesday evening to con sider the subject of a permanent Chairman of the Convention, and it was unanimously resolved that Carl Schinz *as the man best fitted to preside over its deliberations. The C' nvention was called to order on Wednesday by Judge Win, B. Caldwell, of Cincinnati, who nomi nated Judge Stallo, also of Cincinnati, temporary f hairrnan. 1 he New \ oi k delegation had an cj exciung meeting at which 125 dele gates were present. The following resoluti » n was passed ; Resolved, I hat the New York del egation cast its vote for Horace Greeley until ten deleg r es request the delegation to retire for consulta tion, after which the vote shall be cast for Greeley subject to the direc tion of the delegation. Judge Stanley Mathews, of Ohio, was nominated for temporary ('hair man, which was carried unanimously. After a number of speeches the body adjourned until 10 o clock, after resolving that each State delegation shall elect delegates equd in number to double the votes of each State in the E ectoral (College.
