T he Michigan Central Railroad Company
haa started the running of a refrigerator
car from Grand Rapids, Mich, eastward,
designated to transport perishable articles,
and maintain them in a fresh state.
A Letter from Hon. Virgil Powers to
Capt. W. A. Little, states that he has re
ceived instructions to have the route for a
branch railroad from the S. W. R. R. to
Tnlbotton, surveyed, and an estimate of
the cost of building the same made. The
surveyors will survey the route in five or
six weeks. Since the receipt of this letter,
town property has advanced ten per cent,
in value.— Talbotton American.
The Strikes.— The New York Tribune
gives statiuics of the great labor strikes
North. The number of laborers that have
struck is 61,000. Os these 26,050 have ob
tained concessions of eight hours a day ;
27,224 have been obliged to resume work
at ten hours a day, and 11,403 are on a
strike. In the eight weeks ofthestrike the
loss to the employers has been $2,043,650,
and to the laborers, $1,675,950, making an
aggregate loss to both of $,711,500. Other
loss has occured in driving trade to other
cities.
Tiie Tribune says: The International
Jubilee in Boston was brought to an end
yeeterday. The last day's performances in
this unique festival were somewhat marked
by a causeless panic in the Coliseum, and
by a severe thunder-storm. But the great
musical event has passed away, doubtless
leaving behind it many pleasant memories.
It is not yet certain whether the receipts
equaled the expenditures, but it is certain
that as an esthetic experiment it has paid.
If it has not remunerated its courageous
stockholder, more's the pity.
Extensive Art-Gallery. —Next to the
Bible, no book is more useful than Web
ster's Dictionary. The Unabridged is an
extensive art-gallery, containing over three
thousand engravings, representing almost
every animal, insect, reptile, implement,
plants, etc., which we know anything about.
It is a vast library, giving information on
almost every mentionable subject. It in
deed has been well remarked that it is the
most remarkable compendium of human
knowledge in our language.— Household
Advocate.
Men of Brains.— Wendell Phillips says :
“The biggest brains don't go to Congress.
The biggest brains in the country control
the industrial enterprises, the railroad and
the iron business and the cotton business:
it takes a Napoleon to grasp it in his hand.
These are the great men, these are the big
brains—the Stewarts, the Vanderbilts, and
the Scots ; while in the second intellect
come the editors, professional men. of vast
strength, and then out of the third average
come the Congressmen. And out of 300 of
them you get, perhaps, 10 marked men,
but the average are only third rate men.
Female Beauty.—ln Peru the longest
ears are considered the handsomest, and as
a great mark of beauty in the females.
Some people stain their teeth black, and
some red, and in Basque the women do not
cousider themselves fit to be brides until
they have shaved their heads close to the
skin. The Mexican women rejoico in low
forheads and very thick heads of hair, the
blacker the hotter, and the coarser it is the
higher the appreciation, while the
Italians venrate red, golden and light hair.
The Spaniards fancy slight, slender figures
in their women : the Italians, on the con
trary, are fond of full developments of
limb and figure. The Orientals and the
Westerns are also at complete antipodes as
to the manner in which they interpret
beauty and what relates it. Eastern wo
men use yellow cosmetics, while the French
and English dread that tinge in heir com
plexion. The Asiatic, whether of China
or Siam, is delighted with the olive skin
and high cheek bones of the Mongolian wo
men.
CONUMDRUMS EOR THE CAMPAIGN.— Why
was it a necessity that Wilson instead of
Colfax, should be put upon the ticket with
Grant? 3ecause, with the alleged habits
of the Presidential nominee, he must
always have a cobler by his side.
Why have the officeholders made a good
selection of their candidates, and carried
out their principles in making their uomi'
nations? Because they have converted the
Presidential canvass inta a game of “Hide
and Seek."
Why is Grant s “relative strength put
forward so strongly by his partisans ? Be
cause no President ever did one-hundreth
part as much for his relations, or ever will
again.
Why must Henry Wilson, in spite of his
superior intelligence, be regaided as a more
ignorant man even than General Grant ?
Because his record pr»ves him to have been
much more of a Know-Nothing.
in what has General Grant's piety chief
ly consisted ? In his strenuous efforts to
make his “calling and election sure."
Why does the administration of Grant
resemble an old brass kettle? Becsuse
there are so many “Dents in it."
FOR THE CAMPAIGN.

Scrofulous poison is one of the most destruc

unfelt tenant of the organism undermines the con
