Our editor is “pi root in?’ ’ round in Butts
and Jasper counties and hopes to return and
be present at the session of Court Monday
week
The Bamesville nnd neighboring Granges
will hold their harvest feast, at Barnesville
next Saturday the Bth instant. A splendid
time is anticipated.
; Spring goods were in demand the first of
j the week, and several of our young bloods
fired of ihe sombre colors of winter donned
their last years linen and light cassitnere.
There joy was short Irmd.
Notwithstanding the many complaints
* hat have been n,.n’e about fertilizers not
living, we notice that Luge quantities ot
that pleasant odored article are being hauled
through town to f>e applied to the cotton
. fields of Upson.
During the week gentle Spring has strug
gled hard for the mastery over Old Boreas.
Showers and sunshine, birds and floweis
have welcomed her advent and all nature
seemed full of mate persuasion to king
V, inter to relinquish his throne and give
j the vernal Queen possession. Thursdav
morning we awoke to hear a genuine
| Norther whistling around the corners,
; firescreens were removed and the blazing
hearth reminded us ol'the winter we hoped

Dr. \\ . A. W right & Son of‘Barnesville,
have petitioned to become bankrupts: A
w aroint has been issued and the creditors
notified. The creditors will hold a meeting
in Griffin on the 30th instant, to prove their
debts and chose an Assignee. Being one
of the creditors and receiving notice of the
facts, we notice from the listof creditors and
amounts that half the claims are set down as
unknown This doubtless is the manner in
which they did business and hence the
course they have taken.

Homicide. —On Saturday last a sad inci
dent occurred at Knoxville, Crawfor.l Coun
ty. Dr. Ogletree, a man advanced in years,
had been making unbecoming remarks about
the young men and ladies of that, place, and
j being called to account for his remarks by
Mr. Burt Watts, a young lawyer, Dr.
Ogletree drew his bowie knife and while
holding it in his left hand, slapped Mr.
Watts with liis right, upon which the latter
stepped back a few paces, drew a pistol,
which he tired three times at his antagonist,
each of the shots takiug effect, two of them
entering iris breast and ti e other striking
hime some where on his body, producing
almost instant death. Mr. Watts, we learn,
gave lmnselt up to the proper authorities
for Dial, and it is said will be cleared as the
deed was committed in self defence. We
■ however regret that one so young, lie not
I being over 21 or 22 years old, should so
t early iu lite have his hands stained with
! htpnan blood, be the deed ever so Just.
Programme. —The Ladies Memoral As

The exercises will commence at o’clock,
at the Methodist Church, and Prof. E. C.
Pearce, by request of the Committee, will

Bring with you flowers and decorate the

Memorial Address.— The following
correspondence has been handed us, with a

Pro! Pearce to prepare his remarks, as will
be seen, is very short.
The correspondence s;>eaks for itself;
Mr. Pearce:
We. the members of the Memorial Asso
ctation, request that you will be good enough
to make a short address at the Cemetery on
the 26*h iust. We do not care for a long or
studied speech, as a few appropriate re
marks suitable for the occasion would he
most highly appreciated.

“Tiie Galaxy” for May is bright, fresh,
and springlike, in keeping with the fairest '
month of the twelve. The prominent fea j
litre of this number is the space given to !
Biography, in which there are three most ;
entertaining articles. The first of these, I
written by General Eiie Reel us, so well !
known as an officer in the French Com- i
inline, sets forth the character of Louis 11..
the eccentric, not to say insane monarch
who now rules over Bavaria. The second
is a sketch of Salvator Rosa, one ot the j
greatest of Italian painters, and the “Last
of the Old Masters;” and the third is an i
equally attractive sketch, bv another hand, j
of another great painter, the beautiful and |
gifted Anglica Kuftman; in whose singular
history so much interest has been away
kened by recent articles in the English
\
magazines.
“Miss Clive and I” is the title of a char
ming story by an unknown contributor.
An equally modest writer signs onty her
iuiiials to a poem which few pacts would be j
willing to disinherit if it were theirs.
There are poems by Bourdillon, the new j
English poeL John James Piatt, and Mrs. j
Mary B. Dodge. There are “Linguistics” j
by Richard Grant White- There gre three !
serials, and finally, the usual quantum ol
political and society gossip, scientific and
literary notes and Nebulae

Spelling Bee, No. 2.—On Monday
night, 19th inst., our citizens had the pleas
ure of witnessing a second orthographic
contest in the Court-house.
It was understood that this would be the
“citizens’ fight” and on ! y a few pupils from
the schools participated. The male school,
however, was very well represented
and again exhibited their proficiency, reflect
ing credit upon a faithful teacher.
The sweet strains ot Col. B’s cornet soon
brought a crowd to the scene of action and
the classes were rapidly arranged in line.
Dr. Rogers oesired to be excused unless
someone ot his age would agree to spell on
the opposite side. Judge Greene was sug
gested and loudly called for, whereupon,
he very quietly remarked: “I'm not an old
man ” In the female the audience
fans and handkerchiefs were immediately
brought into requsition and cheers rent the
court-room.
Cols. Beall and Smdsv*eh were the cap
tains and right valiantly did they wrestle
with the Swintonian brigades as they charg
ed and consigned many sorrowing ones to
silence
Col. 8.. is a lawyer and we understood
was entrusted with a good case before com
ing to the spell. A icizzard cast a sjxdl over
him he forgot his duty and actually began
to irnpannell a jury. This was too much
of a good thing for the referees and they
scored the Col. two. lie kept his seal, the
rules allowing spellers to miss three words
before retiring.
Shakespeare was successful in taming a
shrew, but a handsome youth of yardstick
notoriety, tailed to spell it, insisting upon
shruish.
Comod/r McC., based his knowledge of
the rums ot spelling upon the following cor
ildary: If t-a-r-l-ton don’t spell tarlatan
what do it spell. Referees marked him
three and lie vamosed.
F. P. G., a dealer in a general stock of
goods, got. his dry goods and groceries and
his astronomical knowledge mixed up, so
badly so that the teacher smilingly showed
him out ot the lines for spelling after this
fashion: peace-meat, bumbazine, tarlumaie,
for ptolemaic.
Ah, we come tc the captor of Mary Queen

from tbe ranks. We offered a sigh but the
referees wouldn’t accept it as they would
have nothing but the ;, est of spelling.

Cant. T. F. Lewis presented the prize in
a happy manner. The victor being called

not good spelling that secured him the prize.
Col. Beali was also called and responded in
the following Uriel, but eloquent style:

Rounds of applauses greeted this happy

Mu. Editor: —I regret that I am com
pelled to ask you to publish this comtnuni
cation, as it relates to one who has passed to
his long Home, but not forgotte ~
Tim cause that prompts me is “self de
fence,” there being now in circulation ate
port that I did bv fraud and deceit get pos
session of. and appropriate to my own use,
the money obtained and received from the
insurance policy of the late lamented Geo.
L. F. Birdsong. The facts are briefly as
follows:
At the close of the late war Col. Birdsong
like many others was in very destitute cir
cumstances with a large family. His boys
had never labored in the farm and were un
used to any labor and easier positions were
not to be had by more experienced. He,
however, decided tpon tanning and I rented
him a tract of land which the family now
own. I afterwards sold it to Col. Birdsong
on an unlimited time. About this time,
that dreadful descase the consumption was
making terrible inroads on his health. I
saw him almost daily and was very intimate
: with him. I first approached him upon the
subject of his insuring his life in the Mason
*ic Company of Macon. He declined, giving
: as his reason his declining health as it
* would appear as imposing on the fraternity,
j He positively declined until I A’tnt in per
son to Judge Titos. S. Shari.tan and propo^
|ed to take out a policy for him myself,
knowing it was the only course that could
! be pursued to leave his family with any
thing after his death. Judge Sharman, I
suppose, informed Col. Birdsong of the
movement, when he consented and took the
. policy himself. I paid aft his assessments, be
■ sides furnished him w ith divers articles and
! means It was well known to all the fami
ly and to Judge Sharman that the money
! obtained from his policy was to go to reim
burse me tor a loan mane to him to pay for
! the lands, bought of Walker, on which the
family now reside. Col. 8., bought the
lands himself and knew they were to be
paid for .* s above mentioned and I bad no
interest in the lands further than my loan.
1 did not even take a mortgage to secure me
for the loan. And but tor my i>ers*mat ftiend
sliip to Col B , his family would certainly
have been in want, if not iu poverty. The
jamily are under ao obligations to me tor
what \ did.
It has appeared srood for some foul mouth
or vilianous scoundrel to circulate reports
which, if believed, mierht be brought to bear
airninst me in a disreputable way. Such a
man as would circulate such a report know
it to be false, would not hesitate to stab
you in the dark anti that in the back.
T i him I sav it would afford me pleasure
to depict his character to all good men and
and drive him beyond the pale of decent
society. Respectfully,
W. T. Reste?*.

Mr. A. C. Ladd, Atlanta Ga.
Dear Sir —lt affords me great pleasure to
give you the result of experiments which I
made this season with Ladd’s Alkaline-
Fertilizer.
I put 250 lbs. per acre as a top dressing
on my wheat in March last. It made
bushels per acre or. land that would not
have made more than six to eight bushels
at best. I left from three to five bushels
per acre, having anew reaper that I did
not understand working well, and the land
being rough. I have since cut off from that
land from 2,000 to 3,000 lbs, of the best crab
grass that I ever saw, w hich I attribute to
tlie use of your Fertilizer. My neighbors
around me used other guanos, three times
as costly as mine, but did not make as
much wheat, and failed on tlie grass crops.
I have tried it on about 1,500 fruit trees.
•A good many were dying but now they
]ook healthy; it killed all the insects, and
tlie trees are now dotnc well. My grape
vines does splendid. I am satisfied it is
exactly what we need in Georgia.
I have not yet gathered my cotton.
When I do so I will give you the result,
I will say this much: it is flattering. Mv
C orn crop is splendid—better than any I
ever saw grow id DeKalbcoun'y. according
to the land. Yours respectfully,
Edward Cox.
