LOT AND Hla WIFE.
A NEW AND ORIGINAL VERSION OF
A BIBLE STORY', AS GIVEN BY AN
ERUDITE COLORED BROTHER.
As T approached a pond, a few
months ago, woere shme negroes were
cutting ice, I chanced to hear the
conclusion of a conversation between
two of tho hands on the subject of
religion
“What you know ’about ’ligion?
You don’t know nothin’ ’tall ’bout
ligion.”
“I know a heap-’bout ’ligion ain’t
I bin done read do Bible?”
MtYliat you read in de Bible?” I
say you can’t tell me nuthin’ what
you read in de Bible?”
“Bnt I kin, dough (though) I read
’bout Morro”
“What sort o’Morro to morrow?’’
“No. Go-Morro.”
“Well, whar he go and what he go
fur?”
“Shoh, man! He didn’t go no
whar, coz he was a town.”
“Dur! didn’t I tell you you didn’t
know nuthin’ ’lrmt ’lig'ou? You
read de Bible! Hoccum (how come)
de town name Morro, and how he
gwine to anywhar? Town ain’t got
no legs”
“Man, yous a bone fool, sho’. De
town named Go-Morro; but dey call
it Morro coz dey didn't have no time
to stay dar talking long.”
“Debbil dey didn’t! Ef dey stay
dar to-day, why can’t dey stay dar to
morrow? ’Splain medat.”
“But day all gone, and de town,
too. All done bu’n up.”
“Ef dere ain’t no pepul, and dere
ain’t no town, how de town name
’Morro? G’long, nigger! Did’t I
know you didn’t know nuthin’ ‘tall
’bout ligion? But (sarcastically)
tele me some mo’ what you read in de
Bible.”
“Well, ’Moro was a big town—
’bout mighty nighs’ as big as Wash
ington City. And de pepul dat live
dere was the meanes’ pepul m de
whole work. Dey was dat mean de
Lord he couldn’t abear ’em, and he
make up his min’ dat he gwine bu’n
de town clean up. But dar was one
good man dar—member uv the church
—a 'psidiu elder—named Lot.”
“Yaas, 1 know’d him.”
“Wliar you know’d him?”
“On the cannel (canal.) He own
ed a batto, and dror'd it liissef.”
“Heist, man! I talkin’ sense now.
Den de Lord lie came to Lot, and he
say: Lot, I gwine bu’n dis town.
You and your wife get up and getlier
you little all, and put out 'fo de creak
o' day, cos I cert’y gwine bu’n dis
town and depeopul to-morrow.’ Den
Lot, he and he wife riz, snatched up
their little alls, ana travelled soon in
the mornin’. And do Lord he tuck
two lightud (lightwood) knots and
some shaving, and he set fire to dat
dar town of ’Morro, and he bu’n it
span gup, clear down to de groun’.”
“What ’came o'Lot?”
“lie and he wife dev went and dey
went, and dey went, tewll presently
oe wife say: ’Lot! if I ain’t gone
and left de meal sifter and do rollin’
pin, I wish I may die! And she turn’
to go fecli ’em, and she turn rou' and
—and—she dar now!”
“W hat she doin’dar?”
“Nuthin’.”
“Mils’ be mons’sus lezy ’onian.”
she ain’t. De Lord he tu’n
her to pillow uv salt, cos she too ’quis
itivc.”
“Dar! ev’rybody knows ’bout de
sack o’ salt; who ever heard ’bout jiil
low of sault? But what came o’-
Lot?”
“Lot, he wern’t keerin’ nothin’ ’tall
bout no railin’pin and no meal sifter;
so he kep straight ’long, ’thout turn
in’ ov he head neither to the right,
neither to the lef.”
“An lef’ de ole ’oinan dar?”
“Yaas.”
“In de middle o’ de road?”
“Must kcer’d mighty little for her
—want to get married to seek’n’ wife,
I ’spec’. But de fits’ man come ’long
and want to get some salt to bake
ashcake, he gwine to bust a piece out’n
Lot’s "wife and stroy her; and what
do you think o’dat? Call dat’ligion?
Andde old man gone lef’ her? And
you read date—”
Here a peremptory order from the
foreman to “go to work” broke short
the conversation.
Ox Cookiug “Greens.”—Every
housewife thinks die can cook
“Greens.” It is the simplest of all
dishes: and yet, in most cases, they
are not well served, for much depends
upon the manner in which they are
boiled. The water should be sofl,
and a teaspoonful of salt added to a
large-sized pot of it, which should be
boiling hot when the greens are
thrown in; and then it should be kept
on the boiling gallop, but uncovered,
until they are done, which can be told
by their sinking to the bottom of the
pot, and they should be skimmed out
as quickly as possible into a colander
so that all the water will run out.
Press them with a small plate, then
turn upon a platter, add a large piece
of butter, and cut up fine. Serve
while smoking hot.— The (London)
Qurden.
NO ONIONS THIS SPRING.
A little bit of .a man, wearing a bil
lious-lookiug plug hat aud speaking
in child-like tones, was conducted
out, and his honor looked up and in
quired:
“Whyfor, thou seedilng?”
“I’m a prisoner, but I'm entitled
to be treated with respect!” squeaked
the little man, standing on his tip
toes and growing red in the face.
“Respectfully, your obedient ser
vant,' replied the court, waving his
hand around anu lettii git gently drop
upon a seek-no-furtlier.
“I won’t be made fun of—l tell
you I wont!” squeaked the prisoner’
“Fun! fonu ’ repeated his honor.
“Sir, this is a serious world, with
four pounds of heartache to one old
fashioned grin. No, sir—l see no
fun hear. The charge is being drunk
and raising a great row—a very seri
ous thing.
“Who says I got drunk?” squealed
the little man; “who says I raised a
great row? It ia a conspiracy to get
me out of the neighborhood.”
“Prisoner at the bar,” said his hon
or when the evidence was all in, “now
is the time to make a Fouth of July
speech if you are ever going to make
one. If you have any evidence hurl
it at me!”
Silence.
“Darius Warthington Jones'’ re
sumed the court, after waiting for an
answer, “you are chawked for sixty
days. You won’t set out any onions
this spring, and you wont he around
when the first circus strikes Detroit.
May-day will have ripened aud van
ished before we gazo upon your face
again.
GEN. SPINNER AND THE R3 JSh
Treasurer Spinner is a kind heart
ed man, but blunt and profane. A
gentleman (who was evidently posted)
euclosed a Confederate bond in a let
ter to the treasurer, with the request
that the inclosure be redeemed, and
its equivalent in current funds be re
tuned to the subscriber. The Gener
al got stormy and sent the following
answer with his signature attech
ed:
“Sir— Your damned bond is re
spectfully returned, and with the in
formation that such trash is not re
deemed here. Y"ou had better take
it to hell, the place of the Confeder
acy’s inception”
No doubt the veteran flattered him
self that this unceremonious rebuke
would cool the ardor of the Confeder
ate, but in a few days he was rather
nonplussed by the receipt of a spirited
reply. Here is a copy:
“Dear Sin —Your favor of—has
been duly received, and I hasten to
acknowledge your courtesy in the
premises. I shoud have mentioned
in niv previous letter, inclosing Con
federate bond, that the certificate of
indebteness had been presented at the
despository now designated by you,
and that payment was positively de
clined. It now, however, affords me
pleasure to advise you that on being
tendered a second time to Belzeebub’s
financial secretary, payment was
promptly made. Need 1 add that
your inimitable autograph did the
business? Allow me to return thanks
for your infernal agency, and accept,
dear General, the assurence of the
devil’s most distinguished considera
tion.”
He was rather pleased with the re
joinder.
THREE STEAMERS BURNED.
SEVERAL LIVES LOST.
Xew Orleans, April 23.—The fire
to-night originated in the blacksmith
shop of the John Kyle. Capt. Hutch
inson, of the steamer John Kyle,
thinks every one on Doard were saved,
as he gave timely warning to all.
The entire cabin of the Kyle was
completely enveloped by the flames
in two minutes after the alarm was
given. The Kyle drifted against the
Exporter and Bondman. The three
boats drifted into the stream. The
people on board of Exporter jumped
abroad of the Bondman, which also
caught fire. The three vessels were
soon burned, xlie lives lost are esti
mated at from 20 10 100. The com
mander of the U. S. Steamer Kansas
sent boats to the rescue. ’Thirteen
jobbing tug-boats m sight made no
elfort to save life. There was an ex
cursion party from Cincinnati or
Pittsburg, on board, many of whom
it is feared were lost.

Dr. J. Walker’s California Yin-
Cgar Bitters are a purely Vegetable
preparation, made chiefly from the na
tive herbs found on the lower ranges of
the Sierra Nevada mountains of Califor
nia, the medicinal properties of which
are extracted therefrom without the use
of Alcohol. Tho question is almost
daily asked, “What is the cause of the
unparalleled success of Vinegar Bit
ters!” Our answer is, that they remove
the cause of disease, and the patient re
covers his health. They are the great
blood purifier aud a life-giving principle,
a perfect Renovator and Invigorator
of the system. Never before in the
history of the world has a medicine beeu
compounded possessing the remarkable
qualities of Vinkgar Rittkks in healing the
sick of every disease man is heir to. They
are a gentle Purgative as well a3 a Tonic,

most obstinate and intractable cases.
For lnilanmintorv and Chronic

these Bitters have no equal. Such Diseases
are caused by Vitiated Blood.
Mechanical Diseases.— Persons en

of these Bitters.
Fin, Tape, and oilier Worms,
lurking in the system of so many thousands,
are effectually destroyed and removed. No
system of medicine, no vermifuges, no an

like these Bitters.
For Female Complaints, in young
or old. married or single, at the dawn of wo
manhood. or the turn of life, these Tonic
Bitters display so decided an influence that
improvement is soon perceptible.
Cleanse the Vitiated Blood when
ever you find its impurities bursting through
the skin in Pimples, Eruptions, or Sores;
cleanse it when you find it obstructed and
sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when it is
foul: your feelings will tell you when. Keep
the blood pure, and the health of the system
will follow.
