SEN. JCBAL AND TUE SCALAWAG.
The following characteristic inci
dent is told of Gen. Early in a receut
Richmond (Ya.) letter to the Louis
ville (Ky.) Ledger:
Gen. Jubal Early is in this city, at
tending the Supreme ('curt of Ap
peal's, itv which he practices. A few
days since he and Col. Fleary were in
Gerot's saloon, when in walked Rush
Burgess, United States Internal Rev
enue Collector, lately defeated for
Congress, together with Honorable J.
Amtder Smith, by ex-Governor Walk
er, and who shot a negro burglar un
der circumstances which caused the
jury of inquest to return a verdict of
■‘commendable homicide.'’ He at
once approached Gen. Early and his
companion, offering cigars, which
they supposing him to be
an old comrade in arms. “General,”
said Rush, “you don't seem to know
me." “No" replied the General, “I
do not recolect you.” “Well; I am
Rush Burgess.” “Are you that d —u
scalawag!" replied the General, in his
emphatic drawl. “I am Rush Bur
gess, sir,” replied Rush, flushing as
red as a turkey-cock; “but you should
not speak o * me in that way.’’ “Sir.’
said the old General, with that ex
pression, scorn and contempt in tone,
look and gesture in which he has no
equal, “your impudence in addressing
gentlemen desrves much worse, and,
hud I known you, I would not have
reedived your cigar," and he tosacfcl it
away from him in loathing, and turn
ed away.
Burgess made some remark to Col.
Fleury about the General’s age, when
the old hero returned. “Sir,” said
fie, “I am old enough to konw what
I am sating, and I am youug enough
to stund up to it.’’ “Then, sir,”
cried Burgess, “our acquaintance
ends!” “Ends!” exclaimed the Gen
eral, “by heaven, sir, it has never
begun!”
Tiie Ruins of EriiEsrs. —Mr.
John T. M ood, the English antiquar
ian, who, with government help, has
for several years been busy digging
down among the ruins of Ephesus,
has just delivered two discourses on
that subject to audiences in New
York. It seems he succeeded in get
ting into the odeum, and also the
chief theatre, which was much like
modern theatres, but it had a tessela
ted marble pavement and fine marble
walls—the stage being smaller, in pro
portion to the auditorium than the
modern stage. lie also discovered
the wool Factors’ Hall—a very mod
ern sounding name—and finally came
upon the ruins of the Temple of
Diana, which doesn't seem to have
been quite such a stupendous affair
as some of the old historians would
have us believe. Avery thick mar
ble pavement, in the ancient streets,
shows four distinct ruts, or grooves,
made by chariot wheels. Queerly
enough, the foundations, in all the
masonry, whether of pavements or
temple and* ci<ty walls, appears to
have consisted of* layers of charcoal
ami putty! Perhaps the most inter
esting fact discovered by Mr. Wood,
concerning that heathen city where
St. Paul “fought with beasts,” is the
finding at a depth of twelve feet be
low the general level, of “immence
beds of oyster shells”—the remains,
as Mr. Wood belives, of oysters that
were enjoyed by the-ancients.” Well,
probably they dkl k-vwv what was
good in those old times. Fancy a
chorus of priests under “the Ephesian
dome” calling for ovsters on the half

On last Saturday night a gentle-1
man called at the residence of Mr.
Henry Mays, in the southersb protion
ef MeXairy county, Tenn., and secu
red lodging. He was intoxicated,
but showed himself to be a gen tie
man, and ]>os3essed of more than or
dinary intelligence, lie had about
Iris person a small dcringcr pistol,
which he laid on the mantle-piece be
fore retiring. His rest " was uneasy,
and he got up several times ditrmg
tlie night, stating that lvo was quite
unwell. When last up, on going
back to bed he took his pistol in his
hail, streched himself out at full
length,. and pulled the fatal trigger,
blowing out his brains. The papers
found upon his person identified him
as one A. S. Niehobon, and showed
that he was the Deputy Sheriff of
Green county, Ala. There was about
three dollars in his pocket-book.
An antidote for hydrophobia pecu
liar to Kentucky is the “mad stone,*’
consisting of a hard, porous sub
stance, the application of which to a
wound is allege 1 by superstitious peo
ple to absorb the poison transmitted
from the mouth o-f a dog. A pro
cess for making mad stones, offered
by Isaac McCubbins, of Bradforasvillc,
Kv., consists of “sewing up a toad m
a piece of buckskin, throwing it into
an ant mound or nest, and allowing
it to remanin for two years, when
full efficacy is Attained, and the stone

LvNtfUAeE of COLOEB.—The fol
lowing is said to be the French oietli
iod of determining the meaning at
: tached to colors, but it appears to us to
smack rui her of the laboratory, than
of geuuiue sentiment. They hold
oot that violet is analogous to friend
ship, blue to love, ns suggested by
j nine eyes and azure sky. A bunch of
violets would, therefore, tell a lady's
| suitor that friendship is all that he
has a right to expect. Yellow is pa
ternity or maternity; it is the yellow
ray of the spectrum which causes the
germ to shoot. Red figures ambition;
indigo, the spirit of rivalry; green,
the love of change, fickleness; white,
nnify, universality; black, favoritism,
the influence exerted by an individ
ual. Certain persons have the gift of
fascinating all who approach them;
| and black, which absorbs all the rays
of the spectrum, is the reverse of
1 white, which combines them in one.
! Besides the seven primitive color/,
; gray indicates power;brown, prudery:
j pink, modesty; silver gray (semi
white,) feeble love; lilac (semi
violet,) feeble frindship; p:tle pink,
false shame.
Mark Twain on Chambermaids*
—Against all chambermaids of what
ever age or nationality, I launch the
curse of batchelordom. They put
your boots into inaccessible places.
They chiefly enjoy depositing them as
far under the l>ed as the wall permits.
They always put the match box in
some other place. They hunt anew
place for it every day, and put a bot
tle or other perishable glass where the
box stood before. This will disgust
you. They like that.. No matter
where you put anything, they won't
let it stay there. They will take it
and move it the first chance they get
And they use more hair oil than any
six men. They keep all ways coming
to make your bed before you are up,
thus destroying your rest; but after
you get up, they don't come any more
till the next day.
The centennial celebration, to take
place in Westmoreland county, Penn,
on the IGth of this month, assumes
rent her a droll* air in view of the fact
that the resolution whose adoption is
commemorated declared the unsha
ken loyalty of the people of Pennsyl
vania “to Ilis Majesty King Georgie
the Third, our lawful and rightful
King"—and this after the massacre
of Americans at Lexington. To call
such a document a Declaration of In
dependence is to twin it into a shape
in which the original would never be
recognized, The resolutions were no
doubt patriotic in intent and spirit,
but they were very far from being a
declaration like that of Mecklenburg,
in North Carolina.
Gambling in High Life. —Some
little excitement is going on in Lon
don nbout a vice which threatens to
become a fashion in the highest cir
cles of 3oeiet\ r . Ladies of high rank
and great wealth, for lack of some
thing better to do, have stt the ex
ample of gambling at cards for large
stakes, and in one or two apparently
decorus drawing rooms stimes of
money of an appalling amount have
changed owners* Scandal whispers
that a nobleman of high rank has
been obliged to sell estates which
have been in the family for centuries
in order to clear himself of the diffi
culties in which his wife had involved
him by her passion for gambling.
The Duchess of Manchester is said to

The fair young Sargent Bates is

lie is about to carry'' our country's
banner all the way from Windsor to
Toronto, to show how the Canadians
arc fond of us. After that he will
cross the bounding deep and bear the

will doubtless—not await him.
Most any woman can sit down

Dr. Foote is the author of “ Medical Com
mon Sense," a book that reached a circulation
of over 250.000 copies; also, of “Plain Bomb
Talk,” more recently published, which has sold
to the extent of 70,000 copies; also, of “ Science
U Btobt," which is now being published in sens*.
CONTENTS TABLES ’
of all, excepting the flrrt-mentioned work (which
is out of print), will be sent free on application
to either Dr. Foote, or the Iferny Hill Fntliih
lag Company, whose off.ee is 129 East 28th Street.
Agents—both men and women—wanted to sell
the foregoing works, to whom a liberal profit will
be allowed. The beginnings of anall fortunes
hare been made to selling Dr. Foote's popular
works. “Plain Home Talk” is
adapted to adults, and “Science in Stout” is
just the thing for the young. Bend for content*
tables and see for yourselves. The former answer*
a multitude of questions which ladies and gentle
men feel a delicacy about asking of their physicians.
There is nothing ia literature at ail like either
of the foregoing works. “ Science in Stonk
can only be had of agents or of the Publisher*.
