BT MRS. I.CLA K. ROGERS.
Once more ’tls mine to ramble o’er these Ulits
Where erst there bloomed but flowers in my path
Whose fragrance bote my spirit far above
Earth’s fleeting Joys to radiant realms of light
Beyond the stars. Oh, who in word* can pa'nt
The glowing hopes of youth, the first sweet dream
Of love, neath sun-lit skies whose tinted clouds
Gleam o’er some placid stream, reflecting nought
But goldeu waves of light ?
In days gone by,
’Twas here I wandered oft with one who loved
To hear In Nature’s tones, the mighty voice
of God. Who saw in all things beautiful
His wondrous seal, the setting sun, the roar
Of rushing waters, aye each tree and flower
His wisdom taught.
There, on that mossy rock.
Which Elfln hands o’er twined for those who gaze,
On crystal waters far below, we sat
And watched ttdewy eve the foaming waves,
As madly downward o’er the rucks they dashed
In mimic fray. Blest Aiden! Gently sweep
spring zephyrs o’er this dear retreat, for her*
o changeless heart! in golden summer days
Neath Intermingled boughs of Beach and Pine
W here heart-leaves clustered lowly o’er the bank
Our troth was plighted. Angels heard the vow
E'en Death tUtlf can never bretik !
How sweet
To memory are those hallowed days! Each spot
Nome happy story breaths of moments past
And as I gaze upon yon distant hill,
The joy of g’rlhood tills again a heart
That since, bath felt the wintry wind grow drear.
As Fort une treaeh rous proved. But tell me where.
Ye rippling waves, are those who once around
’That cheerful ITrestde met? One gallant form
Is sleeping near the village church, who fell
A Hero at Ms post. And near still
That holy House of God. another rests
Whose noble life went out as the morning Sun
Came in. And tho’ Us radiant beams Illumined
The world with Joyful light—’twas dark to me!
But here where Omnipresence reigns
My soul looks far beyond the blighted life,
The withered leaf, and faded flower. A A tar
No night may dim shines bright above me yet,
Then from this spot, avaunt, ye low’ring clouds j
For here In this retreat I would forget
The woes of later years, and lose myself
In happy thoughts of yore.
tfweet Memory! O’er the lapse of years bring back
The same bright forms that once assembled here:
The merry eyes that sparkled o’er this sheen,
Reflecting light and happiness below.
The Jest, the careless laugh, the bouyant heart
As o’er the waveß in light canoe we sped,
Or gayly cantered up the mountain height
Where tow’ring Oaks the gathering cloud ne’er
heed—
But grandly wave their dark green plumes above.
Each haunt of ours, some classic title bore—
Parnassus here, and yonder Tempe’s vale.
That Jutting cliff, and Isle, with Jasmine strewn
A legend ol their own might tell. ’Twos heie,
One summer eve, ere Desolation spjead
Her mantle drear o,er all this sunny land,
A youthful party, wearied with their stroll
In search of flowers, paused. It was a scene
The brush of Titian might have graced, for high
Enthroned In regal state, with sapphire crown
of violets sat our woodland Queen. A blush
buffused her cheek, as o’er she leaned to twine
An ivy garland for the Knight who held
The Starry Cross. With smiling mein each came
'To list their name bestowed. Apollo, Pan
And Orplientr thrilling with his magic lyre
Arcadia’s Shepherd too with staff and crook
Bearing Hites white for the golden hair
Of her we called sweet Naiad of the Stream.
Then Oreades, Dryads. Fates and Muses came
With offerings fair of flowers, fruits and song.
How bright the world to our young hearts appealed
As on the hours flew! Ah, well for us,
We could not see the dark’ning cluiul above!
Long yaars of trial, change and tears,
since the sad morn these scenes were bade adieu,
As refuge sought we from the coming foe.
strange forms have wandered here, strange hands
have crush’d
Our cherished flowers. Decay and ruin blight
Each cot deserted, where at close of day
Tho laborer’s-cheerful song was heard. No more
The maSsivo wheel moves on; the noisy din
of busy loom has ceased, anc the toll of years.
In crumbling ruins lie. A melted mass
of Iron Ui thrown where once the Factory stood.
The Mill With all Its cereal stores. Is gone
And ashes 1 only mark Its place
A mournful wreck. O Change, how dreary here.
Thy shadows rest! Yet still the stream flows on,
The same as in those glorious days, and most
When twilight stillness broods ovr all, I love
Its ceaseless roar. To God It nearer brings
My wandering soul, /lie temp’e Is In this grove
And here to pratllng childhood may I teach
the holy lessons Nature taught to me.
O’er all, God’s holy presence reigns, the sky
The earth, the wave, and grateful for these Joys
A consciousness pervades that not alone
Before His throne 1 kneel. A -Spirit bright
Is wont to meet me at mercy seat,
And ue/er .while life shall last can I forget
The sacred twilight tryst! Tho’ worlds and worlds
May roll between my soul and thine, the same
True faith Is ours, and one in heart forever.
Our vespers dill may blend at evenings' close.
UN FINISHED WOMEN.
llow frequently in our cemeteries do we
come upon a broken pillar, a shattered vase
or a opening bun snapped from the parent
stem, all typical ot the premature breaking
of life’s thread, with the quiet sleepers be
neath.
The tender babe, the gentle girl, the lov
ing mother are all snatched away when their
skies seem the brightest and with broken
hearts we say: “Alas ! that it should have
been so soon. She was* just dawning into
lile, the babe of our hearts. Why should
her short lile close ere it had hardly begun?”
An unfinished life closes never to be resum
ed again. How seldom can we say: “They
fulfilled their destiny, let them depart in
peace.” There is always something which
ought to have been done ere they go to meet
their long sleep; and the eye ot faith grows
dim with dark torlwxlings when these great
storms break in one tremendous torrent over
the soul. But ’tis not ot the untimely death
of the boby, of which we would speak, but
of the sudden slopage of the mind, hurried
more effectually by a reckless, aimless life,
than if it were encased in the tomb. Il the
closing of the coffin lid breaks our hearts
what should our sorrow beat the destroying
and demolition of character?
We do not have to go to the church-yard
to find a broken shaft or a shattered life.
And this is particularly applicable to women;
tor we don't find as many men who “lived
and have ceased to be,’’ as we do women so
tis ot the incompleteness of women we wish
to speak.
Hie avenues of knowledge open a bright
way To fhe’little girl and she begins a beau
tiful column, chiseling each part all through
the long school years, with the greatest pre
cision, rounding and smoothing every rough
edge until the base is reached and finished
in perfection, when her school life closes.
•Then conies the destroyer— society and
the whole an impenetrable veil,
and hides foiever the various compartments
marked out so delicately for ;h> gteat mem
erica of the mind. There are chambers ded
icated to music, but they are silent and un
tenanted.-' Tils ; WttHactf poetry arc deserted
the home of science is left to moulder in de
cay until it soon becomes an unsightly place
ami so remain* lorever. She looks once in
awhile hack on those bright dreams of earlier
lile wheu sweet visions of a higher life filled
Iter soul, though, she lived hut “to dance an
sing and be gaily dressed aud win all hearts
with her accomplishment. She marries and
that is the end. Then steps into this beau
tiful structure on which her life was to rest
and she lives aud breathes a dead soul. It
may l>e the partner w hom she has chosen
still carves liis stone ideal, bringing out trom
day to day each gracetul curve and live till
it stands in {a-r feet purport ions—a finished
and beautiful column, rising like some beau
tiful star in the night, a brilliant, matchless
gem. But she is groveling at the base and
stands lorever at his side a broken disfigured,
shaft, to grow in mind: to stop for
v\:or, to live through all the years a dwarfed
intelligence, and remain at rest w hen the
whole uu:verse is moving onward. Bette r
the body should sleep hencatli some grassy
mound than that the development of the
mind should he crushed and silenced the
sweet souls songs forever.
Woman’s education is no more finished
when she leceitcs a diploma from a college
than a mans. But she lays the foundation
on which to build her life, and toiling with
one grand end in view, so that each shall
have its prper place and conduce to the per
fection ot the whole, it will grow into match
less beauty'. Turning her life sharp with
the key of wisdom, she will make a better
daughter, a truer sister, a londer mother
and a lovlier wife.

Mothers will grow weary and sigh over
the responsibilitp that Baby places upon
them, hut they have the high privilege of
shaping a character,or usesulness. The ex

Baba’s health by the proper used Dr. Bull’s
