THE THOMABTON HERALD
JOHN F. MEANS, - - - Editor.
Tno.MAsToi. Ga.. Saturday. Sept. 1, '77.
The following article on this subject, from
the Augusta Chronicle & Constitutionalist,
which is conceded to be one ot the test pa
pers in the South. is so full of good sense
that we give it to onr readers in full:
“The final action of the Constitutional
Convention on the proposition to elect the
n*xl General Assembly in December, at the
time when the new Constitution is submit
ted to the people tor ratification or rejection,
will cause a very exciting political campaign
in the State, during the ensuing three
months. The object of this action, as ex
plained by those who proposed and favored
it, is to have the Legislature composed ot
men elected under the new Constitution—
men attached to the instrument and who
will put it in immediate operation—and to
cause the people to take an active interest in
the election at which the fate of the Con
stitution must be decided, and have a full
rote of the Plate polled. Although the
election will take place in December, the
Legislature elected will not meet un
til November of next year, aud the expense
of the January session will be avoided. The
Convention proposes to pass an otdinance
continuing the tax and appropriation acts of
this year in force during 1878, so that no
embarrassment may be experienced in con*
ducting the affairs ot the government, We
are inclined to think, however, that it
would have been the better plan to have
orought on the election in December and let
the new Legislature meet next January.—
That the course pursued by this Couveniion
will cause a large uole to be polled we have
not the slightest doubt, We do not believe
that any considerable number of the mem
bers of the present General Assembly will
complain of the curtailment of their terms of
office, or that many oi them will oppose the
ratification of the Constitution on that ac
count. On the other hand, numbeis of peo
ple who may be opposed to the Constitution
will vote for it because they have personal
friends running for office who can odlj be
successiul in the event of ratification of the
instrument. The fact, too, that the Legts
Mure, to be chosen In Decembsr will elect
a United States Senator to succeed Senator
Gordon, whose term expires March 4th
1679, will also add to the interest of the con
test. It is reasonable to suppose that Gen
eral Gordon desires to be lus own successor.
As yet we have not heard of any one who
expects to oppose his re-election, but the
question has been sprung very suddenly and
it is hardly probable that such a splendid
prize will be taken by a walk-over. If we
aie not mistaken the new Legislature will
also have to elect about one-half of the
J udges ot the Superior Court If the report
in tavor of reorgrnizing the circuits be adopt
ed then all the Judges will have to be elect
ed. But while all these things will operate
to cause the polling of a heavy vote it must
■ot be expected that the vote will be alto
gether Democratic, or white’ On the con
trary, there is a good reason for believing
that the full colored vote will also be polled
The character of the contest will be such—
so many interests will ba involved—that the
negroes will come out to a man. We have
■ot the slighest idea that the Republican
party will organize for the campaign, or that
it will take part in it as a political organiza
tion We do not think that Republicans
will be run as candidates for the Legislature
iu halt a dozen counties in the State. But
we do believe that the negroes will be ral
lied against the Constitution, and that while
voting against the instrument they will vote
lor the men of their choice—among the In
dependent Democratic candidates—for the
General Assembly, and instead ot being dis
couraged from voting as they have been in
former contests, they will be sought out and
brought to the polls by those who desire
their ballots cast for or against the Constitu
tion or for or against Smith or Jones for
Senator or Representative. We believe
that in nearly every county in the State
there will be seen Independents and norni*
nees running against each other, and that
both sides will make strenuous efforts to ob
tain votes. When the campaign opens it
will prove the hottest that has been seen in
Georgia since the memorable contest of
seven years ago, when the death blow was
dealt to Radicalism.
Frank Leslie’s Sunday Magazine lor
Sepsember is already lobe had, and it comes
tiesh and lively as a blight spring morning.
It contains a large variety ol choice reading
matter instructive, cheering, encouraging
and amusing. Of the many titles of inter
esting articles, etc., we will quote—“ The
New \ork Aquarium and its contempora
ries, ’ “1 he Tower of London,'' “Stories
from the Talmud.” “The Christian in
Turkey.” Ihe last story from the pen of
Rev. J. S. C. Abbottf “Home Pulpit,” “A
Time to laugh,” etc.,- etc. Each number
has 100 illustrations and 128 pages. Parties
desiring to subscribe should send $3, which
is one year’s subscription price lor the Mag
azine, post paid, to Frank Leslie’s Publish
ing House, 537 Pearl Street, New York Of
all J rank Leslie’s many publications, this is
the most valuable one, the only Sundy mag
aziue published in America and it certainly
excels in value the Sunday magazines of the
Old Country. When it first appeared Us
merits were at once recognized, and gained
for it universal approval and a very large
circulation which has continued to increase.
We congratulate Mr, Leslie on his happy
and timely enterprise, and wo venture to
promise him a continued and immense suc
cess with our American Sunday Magazine.

The Hawkinsville Dispatch says that Ed,
Martin, of the Houston Home Journal, has
hung his duster on a peg, pulled off his pa
per collar, apd gon# right into the business
of telling awful tales, He says that in Hous
ton county a lad sixteen years old recently
courted and won the heaitof a lovely maid
en ot only forty-five summers, and then jilt
ed her. To make a long story short, he be
gan to slacken his attentions, gave evidence
that he wanted to back out. The lady got
him. in a back room and took a board ti him
and gave him liis choice as between herself
and fifty acres of well improved land, or a
good thrashing with a board.- As she threw
him around with one' Yaffil.’and began ap*
plying the board in his rears, the “gay de
