THE THOMASTON HERALD JOHN P. MEANS, - - - Editor. TuoiikirOi, Ga.. Batubday. 8, ’T7, "POl'ftlNU IT BACK Ilf THC Jl'C." MXTHACT FROM OEM. TOOMBS* KIMBALL UOUHK SPEECH OX THE NEW CONSTITUTION. These people who complain about being cut down, and who don’t like it, put me in nund ot a drunken negro that used to be around when I commanded the volunteers He was iu the habit of selling drums to the boys, and once, when the liquor was scarce, he didn’t put as much in a drink as wus usu al. The boys complained about it, and told him that wasn’t right, but Kinch would just say: “Well, if you don’t like it, jecs pour it back iu de jug.” fGrcat laughter and cheers. ] Now, I say if anybody don't like w hut he ia getting 'Hdw this conslitu— tion, just let him “pour it back in the jug.” [Laughter and applause.] I don’t wanf to say hard things. Xam too happy ! [Ap plause.] I feet too good. I feel kind to the meanest man in the world—l am rejoiced over it 1 It re-establishes here upon our home soil the principles ot free Government —the eternal principles upou which lreedom is sustained. It is a gruud triumph, and proves again that “Freedom’s Hattie once begun Bequeathed fcy bleeding sire to son, Tho’ baffled <jff, Is ever won !” [Cheers, j * It cannot bsi defeated—never ! never !! never !!! [Great applause. ] What have fire done with the executive ! My excellent friend, the present governor, is not disturbed. We don’t bother, but they eay the next follow hits got to serve for three thousaud dollars ! Well, that’s so, but if he gets iu and don’t like it, let him “pour it back ife the jug !” [Loud laughter nnd applause. ] Then, there’s the attorney general and the secretary of state ana all the balance of them—it they don’t like what we give them, just let them “pour it back in the jug,” [Applause. 1 We’ve all got to stand the pressure of the times. I work tor less now than I did four years ago—w'e all do. We must remember that we are poor—devilish poor ! [Laughter and ap plause.] Well, they talk about the poor salaries, but I never found any difficulty in getting men to take office at any price. I don’t complain gbout our present officers— they have been very excellent public ants, but they ncedu’t stay in office if they don’t waut to. r There are the judges: wc struck off from their salaries. I know they have to work hard; I know- how they feel about it. lam a kind of county court lawyer myself. [Laughter.] But it they don’t like the $2,5J0 or $3,000 just let them “pour it Wk in the jug !” [Great laughter.] Why, one of your judges of the supreme court told me the other day that lie thought they were getting too much pay, and he's one who has served her faithfully and honorably lor forty years. [Cheers and cries of “hurraM tor Hiram Warner.” A* the Frenchman said: “Gold is the sweat of the l**>r !” and when you deal with the sweat of the poor you deal with a sacred thing ? [Applause, j So thought the con vention when they fixed these sa’aries and if any one doesn’t like it be can let it alone and get out of the way. They say “it low ers the dignity of the judiciary.” That means it lowers my salary.” [Laughter ] W’e can get plenty of good men to take their places. We don’t send out an impressing officer, like wc did iu the Confederate days, to bring them into the service. [ Applause. J There will not be any need fora conscript act to get men to fill these offices, even at the lower figures. J say there is honor in serving the Stato. < When I came to the bar there was William II Crawford—a great, strong man; a man of splendid intel lect. who could live on com biead and bit con at home and feel satisfied with it—he •cfved the state lor SI,BOO a year. That's the God’s truth ! [Laughter and applause.] If they can make more by going out and getting clients, let them go and do it. We have free trade in this business ! [Applause] \ou do not find anything in the constitution that says a man shall hold office; wc don’t force them to held office. The old Greek and Roman idea was that if a man is not will ug to serve tne State for the honor of it, he is not fit to serve it at all. [Applause.] As the Hon. Ben. Hill has now been heard Irom as the lightning man on the ratification of the new constitution, it gives us pleasure to state that General Gordon has also couie to the trout. He is on the same line with ‘ our Ben.,” and closed up his Kimball House speech the other night in Atlanta, in tavor of the constitution ic the iollowing ringing lines; King out the old, ring in the ne\r; King out the false, ring in the true; Ring out the dark, ring m the light; Ring in the law of truth and right. A lady who is very deaf stopped & milk man as he was passing the house the other daj' and asked him how much he charged for a quart of milk, and then put up her car trumpet to catch the reply. The man drew a quart ot milk and emptied it into the trum pet, and the result has been that he has to go three miles out of his way to keep out of sight of the lady, who now sits on the front porch with a shot gun, waiting tor him to pass.— 'Ex. Some one has reported Ben Hill to have said that “the new oustituifota will be rati lied by an overwhelming vote. The public luan who puts himself in opposition to It will have but one comfort left to bis politj. cal life. Like a man killed by lightning, he will have the comfort ot dying without knowing what hit •him.” 1 he nc\\ constitution, by adopting everv other year for the meeting ot the Legisla*. ture, the reduction of the per diem ot the members, curtailment of Superior and Su preme court judges and Governors’ salaries, etc., etc., will, if adopted, secure, annually, a saving to the state ot Georgia an aggicgate ol not less than #200,000. Tom Hoff, Esq., ot the Columbus Eu quirer, says that “the struggle with a young married couple for the first three months is del ating the question as to who slwll be sppaker of the house.” H*j is a newly mar ried UUlll.
