Americans who dine with the Chi nese are sniprised at the perfection to which they have carried their cooking. During a recent Chinese banquet at San Fran cisco an orange was laid at the plate of each guest. The orange itself seemed like any other orange, but on being cut open was found to contain within the rind five kinds of delicate jellies. One was at first puzzled to know how the jellies got in, and giving up the chain of reflefltion, was in a worse quandary to know how tiie pulpy part of the orange got out. Colored eggs were also served, m the inside of which were found nuts, jellies, meats and confectionery. When one of the Americans asked the in terpreter to explain this legerdemain of cookery he expanded his mouth in a hearty laugh and shook his head and said: “Melican man heap smart —why he not find he out ?” WIIAT A LEAF SAID. “I am a fading leaf, watching for the signal for my dissolution. hou can think as you like about man, as lie fades and falls—make the end of your life, here as mournful as you please—dishonor death by evil names and images, but leave me out of your sad analogies. I protest against be ing one that shudders at dissolution. I might have done that in June, when my life was all to live; but in September, when I begin to loosen from the spray, the loosening seems as good as the budding. It is a sweet mystery to be made clear no doubt of something. So 1 shall die as I have lived, with my face to the sun, and the loving heav ens and welcome the autumn frost, as I have welcomed the spring sun shine.” Tite fa it nortii-west.— The steamer California has just arrived from Sitka. Captain Collins, of the United States Army, is a passenger. He brings information of a deplora ble state of affairs of Sitka since the withdrawal of the troops from that place. There is now no protection either for life or property. There is not a semblance of law, either civil, military or naval, and no power what ever to"restrain the lawless elements. At present there are not more than fifteen white residents at Sitka, be side their wives and children, and to oppose this number are several hun dred Indians. Since the departure of the soldiers the Indians have be come very bold and impudent. They get drunk and swagger about town dav and night, and have no respect whatever for the rights of tlie whites. Residents informed Chaplain Collins that they were in hourly fear of their lives and property, and that they in tended to abandon the country as soon as possible. Michael Angelo, when painting m the Pope’s chapel the picture of hell and souls of the damned, made one of the latter so exact a resemblance of the cardinal, who was his enemy, that every one recognized it : where upon the cardinal immediately ap plied to the Pope Clement, desiring it might be effaced; to which the lat ter replied: ‘‘You know that 1 have the power to deliver a soul out of purgatory, but not out of hell!” Donn Piatt says that every mem-* ber of Hayes's Cabinet saye one is a candidate for the Presidency. The clerk on the right, who is known as the Clerk of Parliament, reads the title of the hill, and then faces to the left. The Clerk of the Crown on the other hand faces to the right and being thus brought face, the Clerk of the Crown chants, “La reyne e veult I” Then someone in charge, possibly the resident engineer, gives another turn to the invisible wheel, the Clerk of Parliament and the Clerk of the Crown simultaneously turn to ward the live figures, and bow down almost to their boots. The Clerk of Parliament takes up another bill and reads the title, after which lie turns and bows again, the Clerk of the Crown bowing at the same time. Then they turn and face each other as before, and once more there rings through the chamber the sol emn lugubrious chant, “La reyne le veult 1” Fancy this going on with out intermission or variation for the space of a quarter of an hour, add to it an aspect of settled melancholy on the face of the Clerk of the Crown, and an ever deepening sadness in his monotonous chant, “Lc reyne le veult !” and some excuse may be found for the ladies, who, to the number of sixteen wore, before the ceremony was ovci, reduced to a state of exhaustion through uncontrolla ble laughter, which it was felt desir able should be, like Grand Courts Smile, inward.—-[London Mayfair. The Remains of Columbus.—The Havana (Cuba) papers publish par ticulars of the discovery of what are alledged to be the remains of Colum bus in San Domingo While they do not deny that it is possible that the remains may be those of the great discoverer, they consider it to be highly improbable. According to historical statements the remains of Columbus were taken from Spain to San Domingo in 1536, and from San Domingo to Havana in 1786, anil from San Domingo to Havana in 1796 and interred in the cathe dral. The following refers to the same case as the above. 15. M. W. Smithvjlle, Ga., July 9, 1877. Maj. Woolley.— Dear Sir, —I write to inform you that the patient I have been treating for opium eating with your Antidote is cured. This has been one of the worst cases 1 have ever seen, and 1 am now entirely satisfied that your Antidote will cure any ease of opium or morphine eating. This pa tient used eight grains of morphine per day ; had been using it for four or five years, and lmd tried two or three other opium antidotes, without being cured. If lam ever called oil to treat another case of opium eating, I shall certainly use your Antidote. With m iny thanks for your fair and manly dealing I am yours truly, 1.. A. Peacock, m. and. Mr. B. M. Woolley, Atlanta. My ph as Si it—l would have written to you be fore, but desired to see exactly what effect the anti dote had upon me, before I did so. I have now consumed the urst bottle, and have a splendid re port to make. In the first case, the Antidote was exactly right : could not have been made better, and I h ive felt a buoyancy and hopefulness while takiug it, unknown tome while taking morphine. Besides, 1 was troubled severely with a painful uettlerash that gave me great suffering, for the whole surface of the skin felt as though it was on lire, often for a half hour at a time, and if I assayed to relieve my self by rubbing my person ever so gently, its itching sensation flew all over me, from heal to foot, and for the time, I endured more than the torture of the rack. Imagine, then, how happy lam to tell you, I have not had a syinpton of this rash since taking your Antidote, nor have i resorted to any other remedy. lain sure your medicine is all you claim for it, and do not doubt iu the least that it will re ally and truly break up Ihs most inveterate consum er of opium in any or all its forms, when your di rections are followed. I cannot tell you how glad I am to know that this great medicine is in the hands of an honest and good man. With best wishes for your success, etc. * * * The following is from the same party, about one month later. 13. AI. W. May 2(ith, 1777. C'apt. B. 31. I never slept so sweetly in my life, and r ally have to control my appetite, and my bo v els have been so regular. I have had no need to take the piils you kindly sent me. Send me another month’s supply in time to reach me before this is out. I had rather jump in the river at once, oml go to the bottom, than to begin with morphine again. Very respectfully, . , Maysfield, Milam Cos., Texas, July 22nd, 1877. Capt. B. M. Woolley. Dear Sir —A press of other business has kept me from writing to you before now. I think that I can now with safety assert that the “Cure” in the ease o Mr. , has been effectual. He lias had no inclination to use morphine since the first dose of the Antidote, and now, sometimes for days, forgets to use your medicine.
