Cold, rain and mud will soon intertere
with outd'ior work. It is important, there*
lore, to push it forward very rapidly. All
matured crops should be housed as quickly
as possible, and tall sowing completed as
soon as practicable. It is extremely bad
policy to let the operations of one year drag
over iqtqthc next. A late start is general
ly equivalent to a Lad start.
WnEAT.
Should he sown at once in the middle of
the cotton belt, (this should have been done
last montif in its colder portions,) but to
wards the Gulf, sowings may be deferred to
the beginning of next month. Wherever
(experience lias shown that wheat my be
grown, with eyen moderaic success, every
farmer out to sow at lea3t enough for home
supply. Where success is more certain, sow
not only fur the white lamily, but a
sufficiency to supply the laborers with what
they need. Release the laborer from the,
clutches of over exacting merchants, aod lie
can afford to work for you at cheaper rates.
Whatever profits merchants get from selling
western provisions to laborers, onr farmers
could realize, either indirectly in -securing
lower wages, by furnishing cheap home
grown provisioes, or directly in selling corn
>vheat, &c,, at an advance over cost of pro
duction. It is time that mote attention
were given to the economy of the farm, and
careful study bestowed upon the points
where more money may be made, and, the
no less important one, where any may be
saved —cheapening lab*,r, dispensing with it
by judicious use of labor-saving implements,
and intelligent use ot fertilfzers—substitut
ing horse-work for handiwork; these are
some of the many problems which claim
our profoundest study. But it is not pro
posed to discuss them now—they were sug
gested by icfleciing about the wheat crop,
and we merely throw them out in passing.
BYE.
For seed, and green crops to he ploughed
under—not for grazing—may still be sown.
3 peeks of seed per acre will suffice, and our
farms would be better for having a
vast deal more ot it sowu. Galded or other
poor spots sown each winter iq rye, nuled
by a little manure, could soon be brought
up to a good state of fertility.
BARLEY
may likewise l e sown this month, where
seed, not grazing, is desired—to 2 bush
els of seed per acre may be sown on medium
lands. It is woi thy of consideration—inas
much as barley enjoys almost entire immun
ity from disease, and is a winter crop, not
subject to drougths ot summer—liow much
it may be made to take the pi:*ee of corn iu
the ration of horses. It is used largely for
ibis purpose in California, and in portions of
South America.
CLOVEIt AND GRASSES,
Cannot very safely be sown the present
month, because the young plants, having
yery little depth ot root, are too liable to be
lifted and destroyed by frost It would be
better ijpw to defer sowing them till early
spring,. Rut Spiels already set in grass,
would be greatly hpimiitted by a top-dress
ing of fine stable or lot manure, evenly and
unifi>riiv}y spread over Jty<ana. In the ab
sence of such manqre. one to
two liurdred pounds, per acye, of ajnmo
niated fertiliser will answer. gqod purpose.
One of the surest means of keeping put
broonisedge, or other intruders, is too feed
the grass liberally and encourage rapidaud
vigorous growth. Be careful to avoid too
close grazing of the grass and clover fields
jt w ill weaken the plants and unfit them to
withstand the winter’s cold. Moderate
grazing as long as growth continues, will
not be injurious.
SWEET POTATOES.
As soon as severe weathersets in, stop tjbe
ventilating holes with straw ana put more
dirt on the banks, and continue to add
and more as the witner advances, until a
foot or more of earth is secured. A thick
layer of earth will preserve a uniform, me
dium temperature which, with dryness,
will certainly insure good keeping. If the
hanks have ptAlty steep sides, and the earth
is well packed on. they will shed water well
enough without the trouble of making a
roof over them, the absence ol aloof,
i* is well, however, tJ pift a good shingling
of pine bark or boards next to the pine
straw with which the potatoes should be
covered.
LIVE STOCK,
Bean the flocks carefully and get rid, 91
every surplusjxn'mmX; by surplus i£
every one that cannot l>e abundantly
and well cared for. We have several
advised a decreiww in the number of .covs,
and the raising <f mules in their stead.—
The cotton States cau and ought, as a mat
ter of sound economy, to raise its mules
The first step towards it is. to diminish the
number of cattle—which cau be done with*
cut the least injury to dairy, or beef supply,
or even to the manure heap—for two cows,
half led .on tfhe rations om can consume, will
yield no mare iiUtlex, boot, or manure, than
the one will—in point of fact they will yield
less. Villagers, who keep only one cow,
well fed and carqd Lor, get as much milk,
&c., as most farmcra do who keep five or
head of cattle.
KILLING IIOGS.
The latter part of November is generally
the best time to cure pork. Have cvery
‘ thing ready for the first.cold spell after the
middle of the month. Cutup the hogs as
squints d/>is 3L-d—spread out the “joints” so
that tln-y Shull not iouen each other, and
apply salt at one :. The next day, pack
down in salt ns usual. Treated thus, there is
scarcely any risk whatever in curing meat,
even in the warmest jKirtions of the South.
EARLY SOWN OATS,
If they have beguq to joint, s liquid be graz
ed nnxlerately jlry weather, to prevent
injury from bard ifccfies. But be extreme
ly careful not V? grageso closely as to weak
en the plants; llsey then become liaole to be
winter-killed. Except in Southern portions
of the cstton belt, there js much risk in sow
ing oats after the middle of November, and
we should prefer to postpone additional
sowings till the early part of January.
FALL PLOUGH INO
seems unsuited to some localities and soj]§,
hut these form exceptions rather than the
rule. The -compacting and baking, which
our correspondent “V.” and othera compajn
of, will not take place where surface drain
ing is good, vegetable matter present, and
the surface left ridged instead of perfectly
flat. Some soils of very close texture, and
very old laqds run down and destitute of
vegetable matter or very shallow ploughed,
do best when left undisturbed until planting
time in spring, but as one never has time to
break up all his land just at that juncture,
and the baking takes place chiefly from the
rains and winj of February and March, i
is useless to defer ploughing till spring, and
fall ploughing, when tne land is in order,
is very desireable. One very great advan
tage of the latter is, that very much less li
ability exists, to plough when the ground is
too wet. Another is, the freezes act very
beneficially on all very stiff clays, when
ridged, pulverizing them, and admitting air
which by chemical action briDgs new por
tions of it into condition to be appropriated
by the next crop
