HOG RAISING.
[< is an admitted fact that liogs brought
from a colder climate improve in many res
pects, when brought to this and oUie#r warm
climates. “But,” remarked a planter to me
recently, “my hogs have nearly all died of
cholera, and I have despaired of raising any
more.” I replied my hogs would not
have cholera, and afterwards wrote him my
plan lor preventing cholera, which is diffi
cult to cure after the disease has made much
progress. Cholera, together with other di
seases common (to Logs in this climate have
originated from constant imand in breeding,
(breeding from hogs akin), keeping them in
damp, filthy places, letting them sleep in
the dust, and want of proper attention. A
hog itej-rt in dust, allowed to sleep under old
houses, or in filthy pens, may never be sick
or show symptom* ot disease, but they have
the seeds of disease within them, which
nearly always exhibits itself in the progeny.
Hogs t)r other animals, the offspring of pa
rents akin to each other inherit weak points,
especially in the lungs, which are consider
ed the seat of cholera, making them more
liable to attacks from this and other diseases.
In-and-in breeding .dust, 01tli and general
inattention, causing lice, are, as above stat
ed, the mam causes of cholera, and to pre
yenjt it, >w<£ must first successfully comba/
fthese causes.
HOW TO PREVENT CHOLERA
is a subject of almost paramount interest to
every farmer, or those who wish to “make
a Uvfag at home,” and live independent of
Western smoke-houses. First—l would ad
vise the immediate fattening and slaughter
ing of all the badly formed, inferior hogs in
the country, reserving only the largest,
strongest and healthiest sows for breeding
purposes Then you and your neighbors
j( in in tlic purchase of a thoroughbred
Berkshire boar, and cross with these large,
strong, healthy sows, which you have re
served for breeding, and the offspring ot
this cqss will produce more pork on half
the feed, and in one-half the time, than
has been and is being done with the com
mon stock ot the counhy. Then, after you
have used your thoroughbred boar for about
a year, castrate, fatten and kill him. and
buy another thoroughbred not akin and sae
on offspring and other common stock. The
effect of using the pure bred Berkshire hoar
is, that wo get pigs ot good form, thrifty
easily fattened hi any age, and smallness of
offal, comoined with the vigor and constitu
tion of tb# large common sow.—T- J- Per
kins, in Eufaula Times.
SOME MORE NOTES ON GARDENING.
November.
With slight exceptions, October sugges
tions apply to this mouth.
Cabbage, Lettuce, Beets, Leeks should be
sown in cold frames, to make plants to set
& December and January. Ot Cabbage,
Fottlcr’s Brunswick is very fine. Of Let
tuce, Wliite C.pa and Boston Market—the
j&icir not to be &u?pa&ed. .Of hcetf, none
better than Dewing’s Improved and Egyp
tian. The Yellow Globe (a Mangel W.) is
Ot rapid growth and good fey table use
when young. 01 leeks, “large American
Flag.”
Onion Sets and Buttons should be put in,
if not already in. They are very cheap
this year- Choice quality bought at s2,;>o
per bushel.
CELERY.
We have never succeeded with su.mm.ejr
and tail *ct celery for winter use. Hereaf
ter shall only grow it for summer use. For
this purpose we sow the seed in fiaipes this i
and next month and transplant in Juauuary j
and blanch in May. With no facilities for
irrigation, we have always tailed on winter
celery other than on a very small scale.—
Dwarf White is fine for sum
mer.
MISCELLANEOUS.
Where economy is to be regarded, garden
piajts should be of good size, so that they
may be prepared with the plough, even if
only cultivated with the hoe. The plants
shouid be boricred with barley, which will
give several cuttings. When finally cut off,
turn under stubble with a spade, and plant
to Egg plants, Pepper or Tomato-*-jf toma
to use stakes and twine (or long sjats) to
make them stand upright. The vines will
attain a height of 6 to 8 feet, and bear until
frost. At odd hours manure and plough
over or hoe over the plats reserved for tend'
er vegetables.
Apply vegetable mattter abundantly to
any bald spots. With us pine straw is the
cheapest source of vegetable matter for gar
den use, though sometimes it will be tound
very profitable to haul pea vines from the
fields, to perfect the garden spot with. It
is understood that some vegetables are al
ways occupying the garden, so that it can
not grow /i tallow crop of anything special
ly;
A iyfsp quantity of vegetable matter will,
however, accumulate ip the way of tomato
vines, bean bushes, pea vines, &c., that
sitould be gathered up and thrown into a
pile, and afterwards distributed in the fur.,
rows and listed upon.. It is not ktbor thrown
away to put the garden in the highest state
of fertility, lo keep within the bounds of
short metre, vre defer some suggestions as
lo rotat ion -’.hat wq were about to make, nu
til the next number. <}.
By way of postscript we.would like to add
that these simple notes are by one who loves
the art, following with hoe in hand, doe*!
not know it all, nqr ever will, but hopes
they will prove acceptable; ate mere hints or
reminders. We know there are others more
.competent, If they would only choose to fill
tikis place.
